Heavenly Mountain Resort is expected to open today and will do so with about a foot of fresh snow.

The resort received 11 inches of snow Tuesday into Wednesday according to onthesnow.com and it's still snowing at Lake Tahoe.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe received almost 2 feet of snow. The resort above Incline Village is reporting 20 inches.

The National Weather Service in Reno is maintaining its winter storm warning through Thursday at 4 p.m.

Until then, 5 to 10 more inches of snow are expected at Lake Tahoe with 10 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet.

An intense Arctic outbreak has developed over parts of Russia lately. During the mid/late November temperatures usually already drop below -25 to -30 °C, but NE parts of Russia have now slipped even more - below -50 °C in the last days! Although such temperatures are nothing off the charts in the region, getting below -50 °C at the end of November is rather extreme even there! While it was still 'only' around -35 °C last week!

The pattern supporting such evolution is led by disturbance of the polar circulation, allowing outbreaks of frigid cold airmass to spread south into Russia. As it happened this time, extremely cold airmass spread into parts of north and northeast Russia. Many areas are experiencing below normal temperatures as 850 mbar temperatures are even below -30 °C, supporting daytime maximum values not higher than -25 °C and mornings below -50 °C!

Members of the public mill around the vehicle in which five family members died after being swept away by flash floods
Five people from the same family died after the vehicle they were in was swept away by flash floods at Ngatatoek area in Kajiado Central on Monday morning.

The victims - two adults and three children - were travelling from Namanga to Bisil in Kajiado when the incident happened.

The family had made a stopover for the night in Namanga after spending the weekend in Tanzania where they had attended a wedding.

The bodies are currently at Kajiado County Referral Hospital.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, around mid-day, a pack of bear hunting dogs attacked two hikers and their puppy on the Catamount Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest near the Ripton-Goshen border.

Former Ripton resident Meryl Siegman, 65, and her husband, Ron Scapp, 64, who have been hiking in the area for more than 30 years, had completed roughly one-quarter of their intended walk when they heard barking, they told the Independent.

"Almost instantaneously we were swarmed by five dogs," Siegman said.

Scapp described them as "big hound dogs, in the 60- to 80-pound range, wearing GPS collars."
The couple had been aware that it was hunting season.

"We're always running into hunters on the trail and we've encountered people with hunting dogs before," Scapp said. "Usually they're on a scent trail. But these dogs attacked immediately."

A 6.0-magnitude tremor rattled the Greek holiday island of Crete this morning and was felt on the southern mainland, a day after tremors were felt across south-eastern Europe
A powerful undersea earthquake has rattled Greece's holiday island of Crete and was felt in the southern mainland.

The 6.0-magnitude tremor this morning left the 'whole island shaking' and houses trembling 'dramatically', witnesses said.

Experts said there were 10million people living in areas where the quake was felt, but there were no initial reports of damage.

'It was a major earthquake, the whole island shook but fortunately so far no damage has been reported,' Crete regional governor Stavros Arnaoutakis told state TV.

One witness at Efthymi in Crete said: 'It went on for a long time. I was outside and I could here the rails on the balconies creaking.'

'Strongest I have ever felt. House shook dramatically, scary ... felt that it wouldn't stop. A very long few seconds!' said another, 30 miles from the epicentre.

A brush fire that broke out in Santa Barbara County, California, on Monday had grown to over 4,200 acres by late Tuesday morning after winds fueled the flames throughout the night.

The Cave Fire, as it has been named, started out in the Los Padres National Forest and swept over parts of Highway 154 near Santa Barbara's city limits, forcing officials to shut down the highway until further notice.

Firefighters were unable to contain the blaze as of Tuesday afternoon, officials said at an afternoon press conference.

Thousands of people had to evacuate their homes just days before the Thanksgiving holiday.

An incoming winter storm, expected to hit this part of Southern California late Tuesday night and last to Thursday, may help firefighters rein in the blaze.

Greek media described the storms as leaving a trail of "biblical destruction" in some areas of the country while the overpass collapse in northern Italy brought back a chilling reminder of Genoa's Morandi bridge giving way during a thunderstorm in August 2018, killing 43 people.

Flash floods in France's Côte d'Azur claimed the lives of four people, while two others are believed to still be missing. Three of the victims were found in cars that were swept away in floods in the Var region, and the fourth was among a group being rescued by the fire brigade when the dinghy carrying them to safety capsized.

Forty-one people died in the DR Congo capital Kinshasa after torrential overnight rains, with some swept away by landslides, a top city official said Tuesday, giving a provisional toll.

"The loss, in terms of property and lives, is really huge," Kinshasa's vice governor, Neron Mbungu, told AFP, adding that the dead included a child who was electrocuted.

Three of the city's 26 districts were especially hit, he said.

A bridge connecting the districts of Lemba and Ngaba collapsed, and another was destroyed in the district of Kisenso, he said.

In Lemba, an AFP journalist saw a gigantic hole, about 10 meters (30 feet) deep and 20 meters (70 feet) across, where a road had been swept away.

A 50-year-old man walking towards his home after parking his car was attacked by a pack of dogs in the middle of the night in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar on Saturday. The incident was caught on CCTV cameras installed in the locality.

The residents of the area staged a protest on Monday after CCTV footage of the incident was posted on WhatsApp group of the residents' welfare association (RWA).
