Rare March snowfall grips Istanbul, Turkey - a foot of snow hits Ankara

SNOW

Turkey is once more facing a cold front as snow blanketed the city of Istanbul on Wednesday, with the unseasonable spell of weather drawing the city's traffic to a halt, while other cities are affected by heavy snowfall as well

Istanbul was battered by snowfall in the early hours Wednesday, an unusual occurrence for this time of year in the country's most populated metropolis which has experienced two brief but heavy snow spells over the last two months.

The precipitation first gripped the Asian side of the city before making its way to the European side, bringing the already congested morning traffic to a halt in some places. Although the meteorology forecast had warned about snowfall, most people were expecting it to be a temporary spell, in a month which is usually associated with warm, if not outright hot, weather.

For locals, it was an opportunity to take photos in popular locations blanketed with snow but also an ordeal for motorists. Frustrated drivers had to wait for hours, especially on sections of the D-100 highway on the Asian side. A road connecting Arnavutköy and Hadımköy districts on the European side was closed to traffic when a truck drifting on the icy road overturned. Motorists were stranded for a while as snowplows sent to the area were unable to reach it.

Adapt 2030 Ice Age Report: Polar Spring is from volcanic eruptions globally

Mount Etna eruption

Smoke billowing from a crater, as seen from the southern side of the Mt Etna volcano, tower over the city of Pedara, Sicily
Media suddenly picks up on the term Polar Spring to explain the abnormal cold and snowfall events happening in March and predicted to last through April. Much of the cooling is from multiple volcanic eruptions above 40,000 ft across the globe. Other strangeness is that Monarch Butterflies are down 26% in migration numbers and Arctic Walrus spotted off Ireland and Wales. Look for delayed planting across the N. Hemisphere.

Comment: Ash from volcanic eruptions, together with particulates from meteor 'smoke' and wildfire smoke, all jointly contribute to the increased dust-load in the atmosphere. This changes its electric charge rebalancing mechanisms, producing more intense storms and precipitation in the form of record rainfall, hail, lightning strikes, planetary cooling, atmospheric 'anomalies' etc.

Lake Michigan deep water is warming and scientists don't know why - NOAA

Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan: Climate-driven shifts in deep Lake Michigan water temperatures signal the loss of winter Changes foreshadow impacts on lake ecosystems, fisheries
Climate change is causing significant impacts on the Great Lakes and the surrounding region. As the largest surface freshwater system in the world, the Great Lakes have an enormous impact, seen and unseen, on the more than 34 million people who live within their collective basin. Because of their unique response to environmental conditions, Earth's large lakes are considered by scientists as key sentinels of climate change.

A long-term study published in Nature Communications today from NOAA reveals a warming trend in deepwater temperatures that foreshadows profound ecological change on the horizon. While less visible than the loss in ice cover and increasing lake surface temperatures, this latest index of climate change adds to the growing evidence of climate change impacts in the region.

Comment: It certainly is curious that, despite an overall worldwide cooling trend, with record breaking cold weather occurring in the US, that Lake Michigan has been found to be warming; one wonders just what's causing it?

Gray whale dies after beaching at Dockweiler, California

dead whale
A beached juvenile gray whale died on the shoreline at Dockweiler State Beach, on Wednesday, March 17, as a rescue team had grappled with how to save the mammal.

The whale had washed up on shore about 4 p.m. Officials believed the whale was sick, also noting how thin it appeared. Two hours later, the animal died.

Since it washed up on shore, likelihood of survival for the whale, which was about 25 feet to 30 feet long, had been slim, Justin Viezbicke, California stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said late Wednesday afternoon prior to its death.

"At this point, there's not much we can do," he said.

The NOAA response team couldn't pull the animal out to sea for fear of hurting the creature or causing even more damage.

"It can be super dangerous," Viezbicke said. "We don't try and pull a live whale."

Dead 18-foot-long humpback whale washes up on Pea Island, North Carolina

The remains of the whale washed up Thursday.
A dead adult humpback whale has washed up in the southern end of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the dead whale was located about a half-mile north of Rodanthe on Thursday.

"It's in a decent state of decay already and displays some evidence of shark activity (not necessarily the cause of death, that likely happened after, according to a post on the USFWS in North Carolina Facebook page.

Refuge and National Park Service biologists were able to complete a field assessment, collect tissue samples, and photograph the carcass on site and will report the event to the marine mammal stranding network.

Given its current size and state, they anticipate it will remain on the beach, and stink, for awhile. And with the forecast of rough surf, and continued decomposition, parts of the whale may end up elsewhere on the beach.

Refuge officials said there is no need to call-in reports about the whale, and that nature will eventually take care of it.
