A rainstorm causes flash flooding in San Carlos, California, on December 31, 2022.
A powerful storm brought drenching rain or heavy snowfall to much of California on Saturday, snarling traffic and closing highways as the state prepared to usher in a new year.

In the high Sierra Nevada, as much as 2 feet (0.6 meters) of snow could accumulate into early Sunday. The National Weather Service in Sacramento warned about hazardous driving conditions and posted photos on Twitter showing traffic on snow-covered mountain passes, where vehicles were required to have chains or four-wheel drive.

The so-called atmospheric river storm was pulling in a long and wide plume of moisture from the Pacific Ocean.

Flooding and rock slides closed portions of roads across Northern California.

A Sacramento Municipal Utility District online map showed more than 153,000 customers were affected by power outages on Saturday. "SMUD crews are responding to outages across the region during this powerful winter storm," the utility said in a Twitter message, adding that it was preparing additional resources while working to restore power.

Road closed due to heavy snowfall in Kashmir
The Mughal road, connecting Poonch and Rajouri districts in the Jammu region with south Kashmir's Shopian district, is likely to be closed in winter owing to recent heavy snowfall, officials said on Sunday.

Traffic movement on the road was suspended on Thursday after over three feet of snow accumulation was reported from Pir Ki Gali and its adjoining areas, the officials said. "The possibility of resuming traffic on the Mughal road after the recent heavy snowfall looks bleak as more snow is expected in the coming days," Assistant Engineer, Mechanical Engineering Department, Tariq Khan, told PTI. "We are waiting for the official communication to finally announce the closure of the road for the winter," the official said.

Storm brings fresh snow to Mammoth Mountain, California - up to 3 feet deep

Mammoth Mountain has seen multiple feet of fresh snow in the past few days — with more coming down — thanks to a storm that is hitting the ski resort and mountain areas in Northern California.

"This has been an incredible start to the season here at Mammoth," said Lauren Burke, the resort's spokesperson. "It is a true winter wonderland up here."

The resort got 2 to 3 feet of snow Tuesday, and after a break Wednesday was getting more fresh powder Thursday morning, Burke said. She said up to 5 feet could fall in the next few days.

Deadly crashes, mass power outages reported as atmospheric river brings flooding and strong winds to Oregon and Washington

NNNNNNNNN
An atmospheric river brought monster waves, high tides and strong winds to batter western Oregon and Washington. The weather led to fatal crashes, power outages and flooded homes on Tuesday.

Although conditions in western Oregon became less intense on Wednesday, forecasters warned that the respite would likely be short-lived, as another storm system made its way south from Alaska, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong winds felled trees and and knocked out power lines across large swaths of the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, cutting power for more than 160,000 people at certain points. Wind gusts reached 86 mph near Cape Perpetua on Oregon's central coast and 107 mph near the iconic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, said Andy Bryant, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service's Portland office.

Hundreds of manatees flood Florida state park
Sea cows come to the spring because it's a constant 72 degrees

The St. Johns River's temperature is still in the 50s, and that means manatees continue to pile into nearby Blue Spring State Park in Volusia County.

The Save the Manatee Club counted 561 manatees at the spring Wednesday.

In recent days, so many manatees have been at the spring that it's been tougher to make the daily count.

Rare snowy owl spotted in Cypress, California

It's like something out of a Harry Potter movie... a rare snowy owl was spotted on top of a house in Orange County.

The majestic white and brown owl was seen December 27 on top of a chimney at a house located on Saipan street in Cypress.

Several people gathered outside the house to see the rare bird and take pictures. Snowy owls are rare, especially in Southern California, but can show up in winter to hunt.
