A whale washed ashore on the beach at Grand Isle near the high school Saturday.

Baton Rouge resident Christopher LeCoq was there to cover the Ride the Bull Kayak Tournament when he heard about the dead whale.

When he arrived around 1 p.m., he says about 20 people were standing around taking photos of the mammal.

"Well I've never seen one before, that's for sure," LeCoq said.

According to a biologist at the scene, the whale was a juvenile female about 6 or 7 years old. It measured in at 27 feet and 5 inches in length.

At least 3 dead as Hurricane Harvey continues rampage across Texas

Hurricane Harvey damage in Rockport, Texas

A damaged home sits amid a flood on Saturday after Hurricane Harvey slammed Rockport, Texas.
At least three people have died and thousands of others left without power as emergency services continue to battle "catastrophic flooding" across Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

The National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm from category 4 to category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale earlier on Saturday before later downgrading it to a tropical storm. However, meteorologists warn that major damage could come from flooding, with torrential rains expected to continue for days.

At least three people were killed in Aransas County, an area hit heavily by Hurricane Harvey, the assistant fire chief with the Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, Roy Laird, told the Los Angeles Times. The number of casualties could rise as rescuers are still searching through the debris of collapsed buildings.

Harvey made landfall Friday night and pummelled the southeast of Texas with heavy rain and 130mph winds. It is the most intense storm to hit the US in more than ten years.

Experts now fear Harvey could linger over Texas for days and bring "catastrophic flooding," with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) saying that Harvey is "turning into a deadly inland event."

Comment: Harvey wielded the "highest potential to kill the most amount of people and cause the most amount of damage," Brock Long, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, had warned. He echoed forecasters who predicted Harvey would be leave areas "uninhabitable for weeks or months," echoing language last seen ahead of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Predictions of earthquakes following last eclipse

Predictions

Shakeel Ahmad, a well known cloud reader from Varanasi, has predicted powerful to medium earthquakes and strong tidal waves in several countries, including North and South America, Turkey Japan, China, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. This, he says, will be in the aftermath of the solar eclipse that took place on Monday night.

Shakeel Ahmad, who has predicted several earthquakes by studying formations and patterns of clouds, says that on Monday he observed cloud patterns that are known to signify earthquakes on land and in sea.

"I have, once again, observed the earthquake predicting clouds indicating the first warning signal. A disturbance was noticed in the ionosphere which was due to the condensation of clouds in S E-140 to E N-45 direction. By the magnetic compass from Varanasi, these clouds began to move towards this direction EN-45 to NW-310 and SE-150 to SW-240 and SE-140 to EN-45 direction too," he says.

Ahmad says that on this basis, he predicts powerful and medium earthquakes, tsunami and tidal waves.

Remains of whale found on coast of Texel, Netherlands

DEAD rorqual
The remains of a dead whale that washed up on the island of Texel are being taken to natural history museum Ecomare for further investigation.

The 18-metre-long rorqual was already in an 'advanced state of decay' when it was was discovered on the beach on Sunday morning. Local residents said the strong stench was discernible several kilometres away.

Ecomare biologist Pierre Bonnet told Radio 1 Journaal it would take around a year to strip the flesh, study the remains and clean up the skeleton so it can go on public display.

Researchers will also try to find out where the whale came from, as the creatures are generally not seen in the North Sea.

Dead humpback whale washes up on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

whale
A dead Humpback whale has washed up at Mtunzini on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, close to where a juvenile Humpback whale was found dead in 2016.

Mtunzini resident Claire Campbell, who photographed the dead animal on Thursday afternoon, estimated it was about 12m long. It was found on the beach within the Umlalazi Nature Reserve.

Geremy Cliff, head of research at the KZN Sharks Board, said it was difficult to know the likely cause of death as the animal seemed to have been dead for some time.

"There is no [visible] evidence of a ship strike, so one has to assume it died of natural causes. As the population of Humpbacks is steadily increasing, there will be an associated increase in such mortalities."

Although the age of the animal was not known, he suggested it may have died of old age.

Hurricane Harvey: Grocery shelves cleared and alligators on the streets

HURRICANE Harvey is dumping a "catastrophic" amount of rainfall as it churns slowly across the Texas Gulf Coast today - sparking fears of a biblical flood and ALLIGATORS being washed up onto the streets.

The "storm of the decade" wrought havoc last night with 130mph winds, 40 inches of rain and catastrophic floods.

Initially a Category 4 hurricane, it is the strongest to hit the United States since Wilma in 2005 where 64 people died and £24billion worth of damage was caused.

But as the intensity of the winds petered out this afternoon, officials have warned that the coming days will see intense rainfall that could see large swathes of Texas submerged.

Reventador volcano in Ecuador showing increased activity

The activity at the volcano has picked up recently. Lava has been overspilling the summit crater and generating several short, viscous lava flows and incandescent avalanches that have been descending the flanks of the volcano.

Although the volcano has been in more or less continuous activity like this for years, an increase of activity could be noted already during late June and early July this year, when at least one new lava flows was emplaced on the east-northeastern flank, producing a peak in heat emission visible on satellite data.

Recently, at least two lava flows have been active on the south-south-western and southern slopes, each several hundred meter long. Incandescent lava avalanches also have been occurring on the northeastern side and much of the volcano's feet are covered with hot debris from these avalanches..

Eruption at Poas volcano in Costa Rica

Poas Volcano
A three hour volcanic eruption in Costa Rica sends vapor and gas emissions into the air.

The Poas Volcano has been active for the past several months, resulting in disruptions in the local tourist industry.

The national park surrounding the volcano has been closed since April, and local commerce has suffered losses due to its heavy reliance on the influx of tourists.

In 2016 over 400,000 tourists from Costa Rica and abroad visited the park.

Officials expected to earn around three million dollars in revenue this year, but the volcano activity capped the income at just one million dollars.

The park is expected to remain closed while frequent activity continues, and a team of volcanic experts will remain on site for close evaluation.

A unique sighting of the American Yellow Warbler
Hundreds of bird watchers have been flocking to Portland to catch a rare sighting of a transatlantic visitor.

Enthusiasts from all over the UK, including from the Midlands, South Wales and Yorkshire, have headed to Portland to try and spot the rare American Yellow Warbler which is thought to have been carried across the Atlantic by Hurricane Gert. It is the first time the species has been spotted in England.

Martin Cade, warden of the Portland Bird Observatory, said that over the course of two days around four hundred people came to Portland for a piece of the action.

He said that on the first day people were "really excited", dumping their cars on the roadside and rushing to try and see the bird before dusk came - many of them having driven all day to get there.

25-foot sinkhole closes road in central Ohio

Lancaster, OH sinkhole
© Matthew Berry/Eagle-Gazette
Weeks after paving crews left South Ewing Street, the city of Lancaster discovered a problem 25 feet below the surface.

When paving equipment moved out, excavation workers moved in after the city identified a large sinkhole just below the Ewing and Locust street intersection. The cavern under the pavement is about 30 feet in diameter.

"Luckily we were able to get on this repair before something catastrophic happened," said Mike Nixon, Water/Water Pollution Superintendent.

The fresh pavement on Ewing Street helped bridge the void, but there's no telling when it could have given way.

The sinkhole formed when there was a break in the line, causing the material above to fall into the pipe and be conveyed through the water. Over time, a sinkhole formed.
