Heavy rainfall on 27 August 2023 caused severe flooding and landslides across wide areas of Tajikistan, the country's emergency authorities reported.

The Emergency Situations Committee in Tajikistan said flooding, landslides and mudslides occurred in the districts of Dushanbe, Vahdat, Hisor, Rudaki, Varzob, Devashtich, Rasht, Sangvor and Tajikabad. Numerous roads have been blocked and residential buildings damaged across affected areas.

Eleven people lost their lives in Vahdat, where around 15 vehicles were buried under a mudslide and flood debris. Two people survived and were rescued. Flooding has affected several rural communities in the district and at least 100 farmsteads have been evacuated, the Emergency Situations Committee said. Roads and 5 bridges were also damaged, hindering access to affected communities.

Magnitude 7.1 earthquake strikes near Indonesia's Bali

A strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Monday.

Data from the US Geological Survey shows the earthquake hitting about 182 kilometers (113 miles) northeast of the island Gili Air.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.

In November, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia's West Java province resulted in the tragic loss of over 300 lives and left thousands injured.

Huge Alpine rockslide halts train services between France and Italy

Train services between France and Italy have been halted until Thursday at the earliest, after a huge rockslide in the Maurienne valley of the French Alps which also blocked some roads, officials said on Monday.

Regional authorities in Savoie said the rockslide occurred at 5.15 pm on Sunday, when "boulders with a total volume of 700 cubic metres" slammed into a protective barrier along the RD 1006 road that leads to the Mont-Cenis pass into Italy's Susa valley.

The landslide forced the suspension of all cross-border trains on the Chambery-Turin line, as well as TER regional trains in the Maurienne valley, French rail operator SNCF said.

The iconic Matterhorn mountain and surrounding ski area awoke to a beautiful dump of snow this morning, as fresh snow coated the area.

The dumped snow fell overnight across the Matterhorn Ski Paradise area, a unique cross-border ski resort encompassing Zermatt in Switzerland and Cervinia in Italy. Webcam footage showed accumulations of 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) of snow at the summit and ski area base, turning the whole area into a beautiful white.

While summer snowfalls do occasionally happen in the Alps, it's still unusual in August and exciting to get snow at that time of year.

Flash floods have struck Far East Russia's Primorye region for the second time this month, causing major power outages in the territory's administrative center of Vladivostok on Friday.

A total of 70,000 out of the 600,000 residents of Vladivostok were left without electricity over an eight-hour period, said the Primorye region's prosecutor's office.

It was reported that two weeks' worth of precipitation fell in just a few hours of rainfall.

Footage shared by Vladivostok's Newsvl.ru news website showed extensive flooding, as well as damaged infrastructure and residential homes. Roads, parking lots and bridges were seen overflowing with water.

The island of Majorca is battling with extreme storms as hurricane-force winds of more than 75mph and torrential rain batter the popular holiday resort.

Stunned holidaymakers have shared footage of tourists running for shelter as sun loungers were sent flying across swimming pools and beaches on the Spanish island which is usually associated with blistering heat and glorious sunshine in August.

A 'small number' of people are also being treated for 'minor injuries' after a P&O cruise ship broke free from moorings and collided with a freight vessel during the storm.

The Met Office said the sea plume appeared on Saturday after a period of heavy rain.

Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes but differ slightly as they can only ever be seen over a body of water.

Large hailstones cause extensive damage in small German town as storm hits Bavaria

A storm with large hailstones damaged four-fifths of the buildings in a small town in the southern German state of Bavaria, local authorities said Sunday.

The storm swept across the southern part of Bavaria on Saturday. In Kissing, just outside Augsburg, police said 12 people were injured when a beer tent that they were trying to put up was blown over.

Also in Kissing, the wind ripped wooden slats off the roof of a home for the elderly, while hail caused visible damage to the facade of a residential building, German news agency dpa reported.
