Earth Changes
The earthquake struck at 5:24 p.m., about 17 kilometers deep, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. The epicenter was directly east of Scotts Mills, a town of about 350 people in Marion County.
There have been no reports of damage yet. The Marion County Sheriff's Office said deputies are responding to the Scotts Mills area to check on residents as a precaution.
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake is relatively minor, although many people who were indoors felt the shaking.
"If you're really close to the epicenter area it's likely to give you a pretty good jolt, but this is not the type of earthquake that we would expect to see any damage associated with it," said Rafael Abreu, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "Very typical quake for the Pacific Northwest."
Abreu said he does not expect to see any aftershocks.
An earthquake struck in nearly the same spot in 1993. That earthquake was called the "Spring Break quake" and had a magnitude of 5.6.
It was filmed in the coastal city of Morro Bay and shows a smoky glow in the skies over the state, which is enduring the fifth biggest fire in its history.
The blaze, which has been named the Thomas Fire, has now burned an area of more than 230,000 acres around 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The clip was posted on Twitter by David R Purl, who wrote: "Apocalyptic smoky glow in Morrow Bay from Thomas Fire 10 Dec 2017. "God bless the Responders!"
Strong wind gusts of up to 40mph and extremely low humidity that is expected through Thursday will continue to pose a challenge to firefighting efforts, the National Weather Service said.
Based on the present earthquake parameters (Magnitude, Depth, Population, etc) and our experience with earthquake damage impact, earthquake-Report.com does not expect any serious damage from this earthquake because no populated islands for hundreds of kilometers

Professional photographer Greg Vitalich took this photo of the massive imposing smoke generated by the Thomas Fire from his back deck in Newbury Park on Dec. 11, 2017, at 11:45 a.m.
The Thomas Fire in Ventura County generated the foreboding mushroom cloud of smoke resembling what you might see above an erupting volcano.
Professional photographer Greg Vitalich of Newbury Park was one of those who caught sight of the otherworldly view of smoke.
"I was leaving the house to go to lunch and I was stopped in my tracks at the sight of that omonious cloud," Vitalich says. "I've grown used to seeing the smoke and the fire from my house in recent days. This was a lot different from what I've seen."
Potent snow storm blankets the South
A total of 17 states saw snowfall (see video below) in one degree or another late last week as a very active cold front colored in white a large swath extending diagonally from New Mexico and Texas, to New England. Record breaking snow of a foot or more was recorded in some counties of Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina.
Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, which is made up of a volcanic ash, could now remain for up to 30 years, according to a study by the space agency.
The new land mass, which has a 400ft (120m) summit, was created after an eruption lasting from December 2014 to January 2015 and was initially predicted to last a few months.
The new study said the island, which is the first of its type to persist in the modern satellite era (post-1978), offers a "first step to understand erosion rates".
Following a weekend gripped by the coldest temperatures of 2017, the freeze is expected to loosen its hold on Wednesday.
But a severe yellow weather warning will continue until 11am across most of England, Wales and Scotland, as remaining ice threatens treacherous conditions on roads and paths.
Comment: The UK is infamous for it's inability to deal with cold weather and with winter only just beginning it's not a good sign what with predictions, and signs we can see all around the world, that we're entering an ice age. This unusual weather is blamed on a 'polar vortex', where the jet stream in the north pole descends further south bringing with it extremely frigid air. And with each year it seems to be behaving more erratically, meandering further south and with an ever increasing regularity. It's effects are being felt all over the northern hemisphere (though the same is happening in the southern hemisphere too) where winters begin more abruply and are much more intense than before.
