A giant sinkhole 20 meters (66ft) across and 10 meters (33ft) deep has opened up in a London commuter town, forcing residents to evacuate their homes in the middle of the night.

Families in the quiet Hertfordshire cul-de-sac were shocked to find a sinkhole had swallowed up a chunk of their neighborhood.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue appeared on the scene at 1.30am on Thursday morning after residents heard a crash in the night.

At least 10 people were taken to an evacuation center set up at nearby Batchwood Hall nightclub, according to the fire service.

The sinkhole started as a small hole in the road a few days ago, according to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue service watch commander John Hudnott.

Post-It Note

Hurricane Joaquin to hammer U.S east coast with serious flooding, strong winds

While there are still scenarios that would take Hurricane Joaquin out to sea, the possibility of the hurricane reaching the Eastern United States coast is gaining merit.

Joaquin Strengthening; Mid-Atlantic Coast on Alert for Weekend

Joaquin is forecast to continue to gather strength just northeast of the Bahamas during the next couple of days before it begins its northward run along the East coast. The system is forecast reach Category 3 strength.

The storm will bring pounding surf, dangerous seas, strong winds, drenching squalls and flash flooding to the central Bahamas. Wind gusts could reach between 75 and 100 mph on some of the islands.

As a result Joaquin will threaten lives and property in the Bahamas through Thursday, before turning northward.

Joaquin Track Scenarios
Image
The most likely scenario is for Joaquin to be guided westward this weekend with possible landfall between North Carolina and southern New Jersey on Sunday.

Exactly where the system rolls ashore and progresses inland will define the worst conditions in terms of wind and flooding. It is too early to say for sure exactly where Joaquin may move onshore.
Image
Should Joaquin track into northeastern North Carolina, conditions may get very nasty over the Delmarva Peninsula with significant rain, wind and coastal flooding westward to the Chesapeake Bay, including the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas. Conditions could approach that of Isabelle.

Hurricane Joaquin is seen approaching the Bahamas on September 30
The East Coast is bracing for a weekend of potential flooding as Hurricane Joaquin bears down on the Bahamas. The storm was upgraded from a tropical storm Wednesday morning, and weather forecasters expect it to turn northwards towards the US.

Joaquin's winds "have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts," according to Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance aircraft measurements.

Hurricane Joaquin is intensifying slowly, as the wind shear drops. The storm's 55-mile-wide eye remains open on the north side.

The cyclone is currently listed as a Category 1 storm, and hurricane warnings and watches are in effect for much of the Bahamas. The storm is expected to arrive near the central part of the coral-based archipelago Wednesday night and Thursday.
Hurricane force winds ‒ meaning wind speeds of 74 to 95 mph (119-153 km/hr) ‒ extend outward up to 30 miles (50 km) from the center. Tropical storm force winds ‒ meaning wind speeds between 39 mph and 73 mph (63-118 km/hr) ‒ extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km) from the center.

Footage has emerged of the Colima Volcano in Mexico erupting.

Three consecutive explosions were caught on camera, as smoke and ash were spewed 2,000 metres into the sky.

This is the latest of several eruptions this year for the Colima Volcano, the most recent occurring in July.

Since then the active volcano has continued to show signs of imminent activity.

Situated on the west coast of Mexico, straddling the states of Colima and Jalisco, the volcano is the one of the most active in Mexico and North America.

Elusive deep water shark captured off the Scottish coast

A strange looking false catshark - which has being compared to a discarded sofa - was captured by marine biologists off the coast of the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides
It has been compared to the ugly blobfish or a discarded sofa, but a rare species of shark has been in the deep waters off the coast of Scotland.

The false catshark, also known as Psuedotrakias microdon, was captured by marine biologists taking part in a tagging survey of sea creatures close to the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides.

It was only the second time the fish, which can grow up to 9.8 feet long (3m) was found in the waters around Scotland.

Living at depths of up to 4,600 feet (1,400 metres), they have been found living all around the world, including off the coast of Canada, Brazil, Portugal, Iceland, New Zealand, Hawaii and Japan.

With its long narrow eyes and large heavy body, it swims slowly along to the sea floor, preying upon on fishes and invertebrates and scavenging on carcasses.

A Colorado hunter said an elk got its revenge by ramming his family's car and leaving a large hole in the driver's side door.

Loveland resident Matt Dixon, who spends about 30 days a year hunting elk, said he was driving in Estes Park with his wife, Melissa, and their two young children when a bull elk targeted their car.

"He came up from here and just started charging at us as he came," Dixon told KDVR-TV.

Dixon said the car was about 40 yards away from the elk when it started to charge.

Heavy snowfall thwarts only expedition to top of Mount Everest in 2015

In this Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, photo, Mount Everest, third peak from left, is seen standing behind, from left, Mt. Changtse, Mt. Lho La and Mt. Nuptse, as seen from Kalapatthar near Everest Base Camp, Nepal. Earlier last month Nepal announced the opening of Mount Everest to climbers for the first time since an earthquake-triggered avalanche in April killed 19 mountaineers and ended the popular spring climbing season.
This year's only expedition to the top of Mount Everest fell short of reaching the mountain's peak due to heavy snow, meaning that no one will step foot on top of the world's tallest mountain this year.

Heavy snow has fallen around Mount Everest in Nepal's Himalaya Mountains over the past weeks and has made some parts of the climb too difficult to navigate, forcing many people to abandon their attempts at climbing Everest.

More than 2 feet of snow fell at Everest's base camp around the middle of September, causing the conditions along the climbing routes to deteriorate and Sherpas to work on clearing the routes before climbers could trek up the mountain.

Nobukazu Kuriki was the only person who was attempting to climb to the top of the 29,029-foot (8,848-m) peak this fall following the feet of snow, but he was forced to turn around last weekend due to the abundance of snow.

Vicious thunderstorm crashes through Queensland, thousands left without power after 10,000 lightning strikes hit Brisbane

Lightning storm in Brisbane
© Leah Green
More than 4,500 homes in Brisbane have been left without power after a severe storm hit the Queensland capital just after 2.30 pm on Tuesday.

Properties were without power after 10,000 lightning strikes hit the city of Brisbane.

Flights at Brisbane Airport were also delayed in the chaos, while reports of road accidents were recorded in the Chermside, Greenslopes and Auchenflower area, reported 9news.

Severe weather warnings were cancelled by the Bureau of Meteorology at around 4.15pm who commented in a statement that: 'The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed however thunderstorms are still occurring in the area with small hail possible.'

Brisbane residents were battered by both hail and torrential rains, as large thunderstorms hit south-east Queensland.

Dark clouds moved over the city just before 3 pm on Tuesday after the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region.

Comment: Such storms may not be so "unusual" when seen as an isolated event. Recently however, this region in Australia has been battered by 'golf-ball sized' hail, an enormous sinkhole swallowed part of a beach and campsite and the area was rocked by 2 earthquakes as powerful as an 'atomic bomb'- in the strongest shakes in nearly 100 years. Is this normal or usual?
