Strong earthquake 5.3 magnitude hits Aleutian Island, Alaska

A moderate earthquake magnitude 5.3 (mg/mb) was reported Friday, 74 kilometers (46 miles) from Buldir Island in Alaska.

The temblor was reported at 02:57:30 / 2:57 am (local time epicenter) at a depth of 55.98 km (35 miles). Global time of event 23/04/15 / 2015-04-23 14:57:30 / April 23, 2015 @ 2:57 pm UTC/GMT. A tsunami warning has been issued near Buldir Island in Alaska, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Exact location of event, longitude 176.3821 East, latitude 51.7467 North, depth 55.98 km, unique identifier, us200028ka.

A band of late April snow moved into the Great Lakes and Appalachians Wednesday, dropping up to 8.5 inches in some areas.

Swanton, Maryland, is one area in the Mid-Atlantic seeing snow in late April.
"After a warmer stretch in April, blocking high pressure near Greenland has forced another prolonged, deep plunge of chilly air into the Great Lakes," weather.com meteorologist Jon Erdman said. "That deep, cold air pivoting into the Appalachians with surface temperatures just cold enough allowed snow to accumulate in parts of southwest Pennsylvania and far western Maryland. In the Great Lakes, up to 8.5 inches of snow was measured in parts of the western U.P. of Michigan and far northern Wisconsin."

Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, West Virginia and Wisconsin all saw snowfall by noon local time Wednesday.

A family in Miti Mingi Village in Nakuru County is reeling in shock after its cow developed a liking for meat about a week ago.

Mr Charles Mamboleo on Wednesday said he woke up to find the cow feeding on one of his sheep that it had gored to death.

The following day, it fed on another sheep, having given fresh fodder and water in its feeding trough a wide berth.

"After the first incident, we thought the cow was starving, so we increased the supply of fodder and water, but it still continued chasing after sheep," said Mr Mamboleo.

He expressed fears that his animal could have been bewitched since it had not calved since it was bought.

The record-breaking volcanic eruption in southern Chile is dramatically altering skies, as spectacular views emerge of white plumes creeping miles up into the sky after coloring the night orange. A second blast took place hours ago.

Nature's colossal power was aptly demonstrated by Calcubo, which erupted a second time just a few hours ago, with agencies reporting a stronger eruption than the first.

An electrical storm mixed with the raging spurts of lava overnight to create what looked like the jaws of hell opening to swallow the surrounding landscape.

In scenes reminiscent of the movie Independence Day, white mushroom disks adorned the daytime skies, slowly claiming the city of Puerto Varas for their own.

Even rarer and arguably more precious-looking views opened up against the setting sun, as the white disks collided with its glow.

5.1 earthquake hits just east of Seddo, New Zealand

More tremors are likely following two earthquakes which hit central New Zealand, a GNS scientist says.

Seismologist Dr John Ristau said it was likely there would be more quakes following Thursday's shakes, but it was impossible to say whether they would be stronger or weaker than the 5.1.

"You have to remember this whole area is seismically active to begin with," he said.

"It's likely there's be an aftershock around 4. There's also a chance there'll be something bigger.

"If you think back to July 2013 when those quakes started you first had one around 5, a little bit above 5, and then a couple weeks later was the first of those two 6.6 quakes."

The is the incredible moment a powerful landslide tore down hundreds of trees as it ripped through the countryside.

And despite its low speed, the landslide doesn't seem any less terrifying as it cascades down the hillside.

In the clip, the sound of tree roots can be heard as they rip from the ground while the rocky outcrops appear to subside and collapse in on themselves.

The footage emerged earlier this month, and information provided by the filmmaker claims the natural phenomenon occurred on April 1 in Zarechny, Russia.

Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica erupts again; spews ash 6,500 feet

Costa Rica's Turrialba volcano erupted again Tuesday afternoon, producing a column of ash, gas, and water vapor that reached some 6,500 feet over the volcano's crater, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI).The eruption began at 4:04 p.m. and continued for 22 minutes, according to OVSICORI. Constant seismic activity has been recorded at the volcano since Saturday, and local residents have reported a strong smell of sulfur for the last several days.

San Jose's Tobias Bolanos Airport announced a partial closure of the airport Tuesday evening due to potential ashfall, but was back to normal operation by Wednesday morning. An eruption of similar magnitude most recently occurred on Tuesday, April 7th. One of Costa Rica's most well-known volcanologists, Gino Gonzalez of the National Seismological Network (RSN), said in December that Turrialba could remain active and belching ash for as long as two years.

Nevado del Ruiz - Activity at the volcano has increased during the past week. Accompanied by elevated seismic activity, ash emissions have been occurring since 14 April. The strongest phase of activity was on 19 April, when ash plumes rose to estimated 900 meters above the summit. The Ingeominas volcano observatory in Manizales reported a change in seismicity detected since 12 April, when an increase in volcanic-tectonic (rock-fracturing) signals was detected, signs of pressurization and possible magma intrusion at depth.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): The volcano has been very active recently. Vulcanian-type explosions have been frequent (2-8 per day) and often relatively large. On 15 April, at least 8 explosions occurred, the largest of which produced ash plumes that rose to 15,000 ft (4.5 km altitude), i.e. 3.5 km above the volcano's summit.

Aso (Kyushu, Japan): Mild strombolian activity with low-level ash emissions continue from the Nakadake crater.
