19 dead dolphins found on Georgia's Black Sea coastline in March

More than a dozen dead dolphins have washed up on Georgia's Black Sea coastline, with authorities unsure why.

A total of 19 dead dolphins were spotted this month washed up along the coastline from Ganmukhuri to Sarpi, agenda.ge reports.

Authorities said they didn't know the exact cause of death but suggested it could be a result of dolphin morbillivirus, a virus that infects marine mammals.

"Experts from the Fishery and the Black Sea Monitoring Department of the National Environmental Agency are carrying out research regarding this issue," authorities said.

Meanwhile they warned citizens to be careful and not to touch the dead dolphins.

Large eruption at Sakurajima Volcano in South Japan

Just before Pavlof volcano in Alaska began erupting, a very large blast occurred at Sakurajima Volcano in South Japan, followed by several other blasts overnight.

Tourists were fairly close to the volcano when it sent off the first blast, also captured on JMA webcams (links below). Luckily for the tourists, the blasts pyroclastic flow (and ash fallout) blew in the opposite direction.

If the wind was blowing towards the tourists, this may have been an entirely different story involving injuries. It might not be too wise to be in close proximity to this active volcano.

A woman was attacked and killed by two dogs inside a south Charlotte home.
An elderly woman was killed on Monday by a family member's two dogs.

Police say 86-year-old Bessie Flowers was attacked by two American Pit Bull Terriers. Pit bulls can be a controversial topic. We did some research through our archives and found the majority of the dog attacks we've covered recently have been from pit bulls.

- Pitbull kills horse

- 6-year-old boy mauled to death by pit bull

- 76-year-old woman and small dog attacked by pit bull

- Service dog in training mauled by pit bulls

And now this.

Farmer in China loses 25 tons of fish when 16-ft wide sinkhole opens in his pond

China sinkhole

Yang, a farmer in Guiping, lost more than 25 tons after a sinkhole (pictured) appeared in his pond.
An unfortunate farmer lost more than 25 tonnes of fish last week after a sinkhole appeared in the pond where they were reared.

The farm, part of a local collective in Guiping, south China, was being run by a man identified by his surname Yang, according to People's Daily Online.

Although the cause of the incident has not been officially determined, there has been speculation that the excavation at a local quarry is to blame. Locals reported that water levels in the pond were seen falling at a dramatic rate from about 4am local time on March 24.
China sinkhole
By about 9am, the pond had almost completely drained. All that was left was a gaping abyss with a diameter of more than 16 feet. What's left of the water in the pond was still flowing down the hole, showing no signs of stopping.

According to reports, local residents suspect that nearby quarrying was the cause of the sinkhole as several similar sinkholes have appeared in the fields in the area.

The incident is now under investigation.

"Easter miracle" drops record snow in Kansas

This sun was out and shining Easter morning, but if you looked around you saw something that doesn't look reminiscent of the season - snow.

The spring snow left more than three inches in Wichita, more than we had all winter, which was less than an inch.

As for snow on Easter, Wichita set the record with 3.5 inches. The old record was set in 1920 at 1.5 inches. Just remember Easter falls on a different day each year.

Kingman received the most snow with 6 inches. Shawnee County received the least with a little under an inch and a half.

Hundreds of thousands of fish dying in Florida's Indian River Lagoon

Masses of dead fish in Florida's Indian River Lagoon.
A massive sea of dead fish is clogging Florida's waterways for miles in the latest distressing die off that is rattling scientists. Hundreds of thousands of bloated, decaying fish of nearly every kind known in the area are massed along beaches and choking tributaries and estuaries in the state's Indian River Lagoon ecosystem.

"The heartbreaking images can be seen for miles," Mike Conner, who has been fishing the area for decades, told CNN. "All up and down the coast, it's the same story, and it could get worse before it gets better."

He added: "Our oysters are dead, seagrasses are dead." It will be "hard to recover," he added. "You never fully recover."

The lagoon network is comprised of the Indian River, Mosquito and Banana River lagoons that make up the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway along eastern Florida. It's the most biodiverse lagoon ecosystem in the Northern Hemisphere and is home to more than 3,000 species of plants and animals

Captain Alex Gorichky, a conservationist who runs a small fishing tour company, told the New Times that he's seen "every species of fish in the lagoon" dead, including redfish that have been breeding for 35 years. "The stretch is 30 miles (48km) long, and we're looking at devastating amounts of fish floating throughout that whole stretch," he said. "It's not an isolated incident; we're talking about wide-open expanses of rivers, canals, pockets of water with no tidal flow," he added. "We're going to have a serious problem once they start decaying."

The exact cause hasn't yet been pinpointed, but experts believe the mass die-off is linked to a number of factors. For one, unusually heavy rains from an El Nino year are washing fertilisers and pollutants into waterways, killing the fish. In addition, warmer-than-usual winter temperatures nurtured the growth of a toxic algae bloom and brown tide that depleted the water of oxygen, which is also fatal to fish.

"We have had brown tide there before but nothing to this extent," said a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.
