Shallow M6.2 earthquake strikes east of N Mariana Islands - USGS

The earthquake comes a day after reports of Super Typhoon Yutu, which devastated the islands, destroying homes and cutting power and water supplies to thousands of people.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Northern Mariana Islands, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Friday. According to the other sources, the earthquake had 6.1 or 5.7 magnitude. At the moment there is no official data about casualties.

Earlier this month, the region suffered from a magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Papua New Guinea, causing tsunami warnings.

The Mariana Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, 2,500 km (1,500 miles) from Japan, and approximately at the same distance from Papua New Guinea and Philippines. There are two administrative units on the islands - Guam, which is a US territory, and the Northern Mariana Islands, which make up a commonwealth of the US.

A Florida man was found by rescuers huddled under a building on the summit of Mount Madison on Wednesday.
The early onset of winter weather producing "brutal" conditions and snow drifts several feet deep caught a Florida hiker by surprise Wednesday, leading him to activate his emergency beacon and get rescued near the summit of Mount Madison in the northern Presidential Range.

The emergency beacon alert came in about 9 a.m. Wednesday, reported by the International Emergency Response Coordination Center out of Montgomery, Texas, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials.

There was little to no information provided other than the name and phone number of the owner of the device. Officials were able to determine that the emergency beacon was a SPOT Gen 3 device that was registered to an Andrew Carlson of Madeira Beach, Fla.

140,000 farmers affected by flood disaster in Jigawa
No fewer than 140,000 farmers in Jigawa were affected by the recent flood disaster which ravaged most of the farms located along the river banks in the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Kabiru Ali, disclosed this when he received the Country Director, Sasakawa Global 2000, Prof. Sani Ahmed-Miko who paid him a courtesy visit in Dutse on Thursday.

He said that following the flood disaster, over 120,000 hectares of farmlands were destroyed while a number of villages were also submerged.

Motorists wade through a flooded road at railways roundabout in Mombasa county yesterday after a heavy downpour.
Mombasa residents and motorists yesterday grappled with flooded streets following heavy rains.

The county administration has been making promises every time it floods, saying it would repair the drainage systems and demolish illegal structures on riparian land.

But when the sun shines, all the promises are forgotten and nothing substantial is done. Another statement is issued when another flood hits.

On Tuesday, the Meteorological Department warned residents of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu of possible flash floods in the next three days.

Carcass of a large fin whale stranded on the beach in De Haan.
An 18-metre (60-foot) fin whale washed up overnight on a Belgian beach after dying offshore, in what the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences called a rare event.

The male whale, which weighed 35 tonnes, was first spotted at sea on Wednesday before its body drifted to the Coq beach near Bruges, the first time such an event has occurred in 21 years, local media said.

Fin whales are a protected species and are the world's second biggest mammals after blue whales.

The huge carcass was to be cut up and moved to a site where specialists will try to determine the cause of death.

On its Twitter account, the institute asked spectators to keep their distance while the operation was ongoing.

Atmospheric radiation continues to increase over the US

atmospheric radiation US increase

Radiation dose rates at the Regener-Pfotzer Maximum, ~65,000 ft high at the entrance to the stratosphere.
So you thought Solar Minimum was boring? Think again. High-altitude balloon flights conducted by Spaceweather.com and Earth to Sky Calculus show that atmospheric radiation is intensifying from coast to coast over the USA-an ironic result of low solar activity.

Since 2015, we have been monitoring X-rays, gamma-rays and neutrons in the stratosphere-mainly over central California, but also in a dozen other states (NV, OR, WA, ID, WY, KS, NE, MO, IL, ME, NH, VT). Everywhere we have been there is an upward trend in radiation-ranging from +20% in central California to +33% in Maine. The latest points, circled in red, were gathered during a ballooning campaign in August-October 2018.

How does Solar Minimum boost radiation? The answer lies in the yin-yang relationship between cosmic rays and solar activity. Cosmic rays are the subatomic debris of exploding stars and other violent events. They come at us from all directions, 24/7. Normally, the sun's magnetic field and solar wind hold cosmic rays at bay-but during Solar Minimum these defenses weaken. Deep-space radiation surges into the solar system.

Comment: By now it is well documented that our Sun is going quiet, Earth's magnetic field is weakening and the planets within our solar system are showing serious signs of change.

Shallow M6.8 earthquake off Greek coast triggers mini-tsunami warning

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece early on Friday, briefly triggering a tsunami warning. No significant damage has been reported.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 16.6km (10 miles) below the sea floor. It reached the island of Zakynthos, a popular tourist destination, with initial reports indicating that some of the buildings there sustained damage.

A photo showing debris on the floor and dangling wires has been posted by a local resident.

However, the majority of the buildings appeared to be intact. "Minimal damage. Back to bed," a tourist, apparently vacationing on Zakynthos, tweeted.

The tower of the 13th-century Castro Monastery in the Strofades, small islands to the southeast of Zakynthos, was also affected by the quake, though the extent of the damage is unclear.

The earthquake was so powerful that jolts were felt across the region in at least eight countries, including Malta, Libya, Italy, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Turkey, according to the EMSC.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) warned about a possible low-scale tsunami that could last for several hours after the earthquake, citing sea level changes following the tremor.

A flooded street in Tuapse
Torrential rains hit Southern Russia on Wednesday, causing flash flooding and seriously disrupting life in the area. At least two people were killed by the disaster.

The storm and heavy rains affected a long stretch of Black Sea coast - from the town of Dzhubga in the northwest, to the city of Sochi in southeastern parts of the coast. The area is particularly vulnerable to flooding since it is separated from plains further north by Western Caucasus mountain range.

As of Thursday, an elderly couple was reportedly killed in the disaster and one woman is missing, with her family unable to contact her. An evacuation was ordered for about 460 people living in areas most endangered by the flooding. Residents of a small mountain village refused to leave even as the only road connecting it to the outside world was destroyed by water. Emergency services said they will be providing food and other essentials to the 176 people living there.
