Red alert as tropical cyclone strikes Western Australia's Pilbara coast

Cyclone Christine

Residents were hunkering down as an intensifying Tropical Cyclone Christine crossed into Western Australia.
Residents took shelter as Tropical Cyclone Christine approached Western Australia's Pilbara coast bringing destructive storms to the region.

A red alert has been issued for people in or near coastal areas between Pardoo and Mardie, including Port Hedland, South Hedland, Whim Creek, Roebourne, Point Samson, Wickham, Karratha and Dampier.

The Department for Child Protection and Family Support has set up a relocation point at the JD Hardie Centre in South Hedland, where about 85 people have sought shelter.

A yellow alert is current for people in inland areas, including Marble Bar, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica.

Authorities say there is a possible threat to lives and homes.

A blue alert remains for people in or near coastal areas between Bidyadanga and Pardoo, and between Mardie and Onslow, and the inland area from Marble Bar to Newman.

Cyclone Christine will continue to intensify and was expected to cross the coast between Karratha and Port Hedland today, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

"Climate Change" scientific crew on ice: The Antarctic 'research' fiasco

As we reported previously on WUWT here and here, the saga of the "climate scientists/tourists trapped in ice" continues to fascinate many. Now a second ship has given up on rescue, after the Chinese ship "Snow Dragon" gave up two days ago. The Aurora Australis has abandoned rescue of the trapped Russian "research"vessel in Antarctica and a helicopter evacuation in now being ordered. This episode has taken on a heightened comedic fiasco-like quality.

Now, with such a fantastic failure in full world view, questions are going to start being asked. For example, with advanced tools at their disposal (that Mawson never had) such as near real-time satellite imaging of Antarctic sea ice, GPS navigation, on-board Internet, radar, and satellite communications, one wonders how these folks managed to get themselves stuck at all. Was it simple incompetence of ignoring the signs and data at their disposal combined with "full steam ahead" fever? Even the captain of the Aurora Australis had the good sense to turn back knowing he'd reached the limits of the ship on his rescue attempt. Or, was it some sort of publicity stunt to draw attention? If it was the latter, it has backfired mightily.

One might argue that with photos like the one below, this whole "Spirit of Mawson" research expedition, is little more than a media stunt.

El Salvador issues yellow alert as evacuation begins in San Miguel.
Authorities in El Salvador have started to evacuate the municipality of San Miguel after the Chaparrastique volcano erupted on Sunday, shooting a giant ash cloud into the sky.

The government has issued a yellow alert and is expected to evacuate families within 3 kilometers (approximately 2 miles) of the volcano to emergency shelters.

More than 5,000 people live near the volcano according to civil protection officials.

Civil defence director Jorge Melendez said: "We have implemented emergency measures to evacuate villages located within 3 kilometres of the volcano."

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries, although two people are being treated for respiratory problems.

Mercury plummets 32 degrees in just hours in Minneapolis MN

Bitterly cold weather lingered in central and eastern parts of the country on Monday, with some regions experiencing wind chills as low as 25 to 35 degrees below zero.

"Very cold wind chills this morning," the National Weather Service said in an advisory for Wisconsin, warning about the possibility of frost bite and hypothermia if precautions weren't taken.

The combination of frigid air and high winds would produce wind chills of up to 35 degrees below zero from the Dakotas into Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, it predicted.

The Weather Channel noted that Minneapolis saw a 32 degree temperature swing on Sunday, "starting the day at 29 degrees, at midnight, temperatures plummeted to 3 below zero by 10 a.m. And factoring in the winds, it felt closer to 20 below."

Thousands in El Salvador flee erupting Chaparrastique volcano

Thousands of people in eastern El Salvador are leaving their homes after a volcano erupted on Sunday morning.

Residents in the coffee-producing region said they had heard a powerful explosion before the Chaparrastique volcano began spewing hot ash and smoke into the air.

No one has been hurt, say the authorities. Anyone living in a 3km (2 mile) radius will be evacuated.

Temporary shelters are being set up in the area. Civil protection authorities say that some 5,000 people live in the area, in San Miguel province.
The eruption began at 10:30 local time (16:30 GMT).

Bad weather thwarts third rescue attempts of stranded Antarctica ship

This image taken by passenger Andrew Peacock on Dec. 30, shows the ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy still stuck in the ice off East Antarctica, as it waits to be rescued.
Weather conditions thwarted efforts of a third rescue vessel attempting to approach a trapped research ship in Antarctica on Monday, officials reported.

Snow showers and high winds made it impossible for the Aurora Australis to approach the MV Akademic Shokalskiy, which has been stuck in multi-layered slabs of ice more than 10-feet deep since Christmas Eve, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

The Aurora made it within 10 nautical miles of the stranded ship before having to retreat, AMSA said.

The Aurora reached the general vicinity of the Akademic Shokalskiy early Monday (Sunday afternoon, Eastern Time) as the crew was encouraged by cracking ice surrounding the ship, leading crew members to make a light-hearted video they posted on Twitter:

Located 5 km (3 miles) from downtown Sucre, Bolivia is Cal Orko, an imposing limestone slab 1.5 km (0.9 miles) long and over 100 meters high (328 ft). On this steep face (inclination of 72 degrees), visitors can peer through time to when dinosaurs roamed the Earth over 68 million years ago.

At Cal Orko you will find 462 distinct dinosaur tracks from at least 8 different species, totaling an incredible 5,055 individual dinosaur footprints. So how do thousands of dinosaur footprints come to be, on a seemingly vertical rock face hundreds of feet high? You'll have to scroll down to find out.

7,000 stranded by rare floods in Sarawak

Miri - Flood relief operations are in full swing as emergency food aid is being rushed to the interior north of Sarawak.

This follows the worsening situation in Ulu Baram, where access for some 7,000 people had been cut off as rain continues.

Several residents from the Marudi district and Long Lama sub-district have called The Star, saying they needed food supply.

The division's Welfare Department head Goh Yong Kiat confirmed that it had received appeals for food aid from residents across Baram.

As of yesterday afternoon, he said at least 28 longhouses had been affected by floods.

"We have sent food to 21 of the 28 longhouses and we are arranging for the others. The deployed assistance will help at least 985 families," Goh said, adding that they were liaising with Marudi's district office, which oversees the operations.

Goh said Ulu Baram had been inundated since Dec 22, with some longhouses recording water levels rising over one metre.

In Kuching, heavy rain coupled with high tide caused Bintulu in central Sarawak to be inundated, a rare occurrence for the town.
