People were puzzled across the central United States on Thursday when they looked outside to see an unusual sight: brown snow.

Snow appeared to have a yellow, orange or brown tint to it in parts of Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Minneapolis was one of the bigger cities that saw this unusual weather phenomenon.

Social media users commented that it looked like bits of frozen ice tea were mixed in with the snow. Some even said that it looked poopy brown.

The origins of these colors can be traced back hundreds of miles to Texas and New Mexico.

Extreme weather cost Scottish farmers £131m in 2018

Sheep farming

Sheep farmers were the hardest hit because of the unpredictable weather of 2017-2018

Extreme weather contributed to losses of up to £161m for Scotland's farmers during 2017 and 2018 amid fears such unpredictable weather will soon become the norm.

Last year's adverse weather had an impact on livestock and yields of key crops across Scotland according to a new report published this week.

Sheep farmers suffered the biggest losses of £45m as the Beast from the East hit during lambing season.

The largest impact on beef producers was the increased cost of feed, as cattle were kept inside for longer during the bad weather and grass growth was low during the dry summer. This cost farmers £28m.

Cereal crops were also significantly impacted, costing the sector £34m. Total production, area grown and yields were down in 2018 due to previous year due to the poor weather conditions at key points in the season.

At the UK level, wholesale prices of some staples like carrots, lettuce and onions rose by up to 80%.

Comment: Erratic seasons and extreme weather devastating crops around the world

Crop and cattle losses are on the rise everywhere, whether it is due to extensive drought, massive hail, epic flooding, huge dust storms, unexpected frosts, and even epidemics. See also:

A newborn is in a critical condition after being attacked by a dog.

The baby boy, who is six weeks old, was attacked at an address in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, at 4.35pm yesterday.

He was rushed to Borders General Hospital and then transferred to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Sick Children via an air ambulance.

Hawick councillor Davie Paterson confirmed the boy's condition 'could be a matter of life and death'.

He said: 'It's an absolute tragedy and it's going to hit the town hard. 'I don't know the full circumstances of what happened but from what I'm hearing the child could be scarred for life. 'I was told about it with the council yesterday and I was absolutely horrified.'

Vavilov Ice Cap
The cold-based glacier at the Vavilov Ice Cap in Russia suddenly surged after 2013. Changes there have scientists rethinking how rapidly glaciers in cold, dry areas can move.

Satellite images of dramatic changes in a glacier in the Russian High Arctic is forcing scientists to rethink how cold-based glaciers work.

Cold-based glaciers exist at high latitudes that receive little snow or rain. They rarely move more than a few yards per year.

University of Colorado Boulder glaciologist Michael Willis was studying the Vavilov Ice Cap on October Revolution Island in the Kara Sea north of Siberia when he discovered the glacier began sliding dozens of times faster than is typical, according to a blog post from NASA.

A strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia on Friday (April 12), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, triggering a tsunami warning and sending panicked residents fleeing from their homes.

The quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 17km off the east coast of Sulawesi island, the USGS said, where a 7.5-magnitude quake-tsunami around the city of Palu killed more than 4,300 people last year.

Indonesia's disaster agency issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities in Morowali district, where residents were advised to move away from the coast.
