'The sky has fallen': Chinese farmers see livelihoods washed away by floods - Over a million animals killed

Chinese farmer Cheng wades through knee-deep water, pulling dead pigs behind him one-by-one by a rope tied around their ankles as he lines up the bloated carcasses for disposal. More than 100 of Cheng's pigs drowned in floods that paralyzed China's central Henan province last week, and the outlook for those left alive is bleak.

"I'm waiting for the water levels to go down to see what to do with the remaining pigs," said the 47-year-old farmer from Wangfan village, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of provincial capital Zhengzhou.

"They've been in the water for a few days now and can't eat at all. I don't think even one pig will be left."

Cheng's farm is one of thousands in Henan, famous for agriculture, and pork production in particular. The province was struck by heavy rains last week that sparked the worst flash flooding in centuries, catching many by surprise.

"In an instant, we now have no way of surviving. We have no other skills. We have no more money to raise pigs again," Cheng, who has raised pigs all his life, told Reuters at his farm on Sunday.

"This is as if the sky has fallen."

A lightning strike leaves one person with moderate injuries and others with minor injuries after being hit by the bolt on Clam Pass beach.

Witnesses say the lightning strike happened around 6 p.m. on Monday. First responders arrived at the Clam Pass State Park in Naples for the call.

A worker at a nearby hotel said he was carrying a chair cushion to keep him from getting wet from the incoming storm when the bolt hit so close to him his hat fell off and he hit the sand.

Monday's lightning strike makes three separate incidents of people getting hit by lightning in the past ten days.

An earthquake of 6.2-magnitude on Richter Scale struck near Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said. The earthquake hit offshore Sulawasi island at around 5.39 PM but there is no tsunami warning as of now, news agency AFP reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or loss of life. The epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres and at 97 km west-northwest of Luwuk, according to USGS. Tremors from the strong earthquake were also felt about 200 kilometres from the epicentre at Palu.

In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, followed by tsunami in Palu had left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

The 20-car pileup in Utah in which at least eight people were killed.
At least eight people have been killed in a 20-vehicle pileup during a sandstorm in Utah, the highway patrol said.

The crashes happened on Interstate 15 near the town of Kanosh on Sunday, the agency said in a news release. Several people were reportedly taken to hospitals in critical condition. Ground and air ambulances were used to transport crash victims.

The pileup occurred during a period of high winds that caused a dust or sandstorm which reduced visibility, the highway patrol said.

Five of the eight people killed were in one vehicle, while two others were in another vehicle, according to a news release. Another fatality was in a third vehicle.

A violent hailstorm has brought traffic to a halt on one of Italy's main highways, injuring a number of people and smashing car windows.

The storm hit part of the northern stretch of the road between Milan and Naples, which runs for almost 500 miles.

Hundreds of cars were pelted with hail, forcing drivers to pull up by the roadside and causing authorities to close part of the road for a short time.

Footage broadcast by Italian weather channel Meteo Weather 24, showed vehicles with smashed windscreens, stopped on the road as the storm passed.

Massive wildfires have ravaged tens of thousands of hectares on the Italian island of Sardinia. Firefighters are struggling to contain the blaze as it rages for a third day straight, with Rome asking the EU for help.

More than 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of forest and land have been devastated on Sardinia as wildfires raged through the Montiferru region in the island's west. The outbreaks also stretched east to the province of Ogliastra.

Videos published on social media showed walls of fire moving along the mountain slopes in Sardinia and closing in on some settlements, as plumes of black smoke blotted out the skies overhead. Firefighting aircraft water-bombed the blaze just meters away from homes, the footage showed.

Typhoon In-Fa left the Philippines last Friday but continues to enhance the southwest monsoon.

Heavy rains over the weekend flooded different parts of the capital Manila and other provinces in Luzon and Visayas region. The disaster agency reported that 44,563 individuals were evacuated and are staying in 81 evacuation sites across the country.

Mary Jay Versoza and her whole family were evacuated from the coastal neighborhood of Baseco Compound in Manila City. Her house was flooded waist-deep and she was worried for the safety of her young children. Her family is staying at the Baseco Evacuation Center along with 277 other families.

Each family was provided with a modular tent, food and other necessities. But Versoza's worries are not yet over.

Thousands of hectares have been devastated by forest fires over the weekend in Spain.

Above all, in the region of Catalonia, where the situation is critical. Dozens of people have had to be evicted due to the advance of the fire.

Four people are missing after falling into the sea when an offshore construction unit tilted off the coast of Huzhou City, China.

According to local media, at the time of the incident there were 65 people on board, of whom four are missing.

Currently, search and rescue efforts are taking place involving helicopters and vessels, while the jack-up unit has stabilized.

The unit was built in 2015, with the first information indicating that the cause of the incident could be a sudden penetration of one of the rig's legs into the seabed.
