Sunday's drop in temperatures throughout Morocco has led to the first snowfall, reaching 30 centimeters in Ifrane.

Ifrane, known as Morocco's "Switzerland," is not used to seeing snowfall this early before winter. Most snow falls in January.

With snow-covered evergreens and steep-peaked houses, Ifrane becomes a winter wonderland with each snowfall. The temperature in Ifrane was -1 degree Celsius yesterday.

Locals in the Atlas Mountain villages of Imouzzer, El Hajeb, and Boulemane and the city of Midelt also woke up to snow on the ground.

The huge October snowfalls currently hitting the Alps have seen some big tallies now being reported by already-open glacier ski areas ...although most have had to close or delay opening due to strong winds and deep drifts.

The recently opened for the 18-19 season Diavolezza glacier near St Moritz in the Swiss Engadin region reports the most snow over the last 3 days at 142cm - or three inches less than five feet.

The Passo Stelvio ski area in Italy, pictured below, which is in the final week of its six month 2018 summer ski season, reports a metre of snow.

6 dead as 70% of Venice is flooded following high winds and highest tide in a decade

Nearly three-quarters of Venice, Italy, was flooded Monday because of a storm system that brought strong winds, driving up water levels more than five feet in the lagoon city, officials said.

High winds push water in from the lagoon, flooding parts of the city frequently, but Monday's levels were far higher than normal. At its peak, Monday's water level reached nearly 61.5 inches, the highest since December 2008. Water levels were forecast to reach 63 inches above normal levels, which would have been the first time that had happened since December 1979.

"A strong low-pressure system is spinning through southern Europe, spreading heavy rain and strong winds across northern Italy," said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. "The strong winds triggered the inundation in Venice as they blew from south to north through the Adriatic Sea."

Quake struck at depth of 10 km

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the southern tip of Argentina.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit 324 km south of the resort town of Ushuaia, on the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego.

It occurred in the ocean, in a hazardous stretch of water known as the Drake Passage.

The quake is thought to be shallow and struck at a depth of 10 km, at 2:54 am local time, according to the US Geological Survey.

A sharemilker watched in awe from his tractor as a giant tornado formed near Hamilton.

Two people killed after being hit by lightning bolt outside church in Kenya

Two people died on Saturday evening after they were struck by lightning while sheltering from heavy rains outside a church in Lower Solai Sub-Location, Nakuru county.

According to area Assistant Chief Stanley Bett, the deceased include a 21-year-old woman and a Class Six pupil.

The woman was in the company of three children, one of them being her niece, when lightning struck them outside AIC Church, Kapkirem.

The four were rushed to a dispensary at Lower Solai hospital, where the woman succumbed to injuries.

Comment: Elsewhere in the last few days lightning strikes have also killed individuals in Saudi Arabia, Ghana and Nigeria.

The island, located about 550 miles northwest of Honolulu, is part of a chain of small island groups in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. When the chain was swept by powerful storm surges from Hurricane Walaka earlier this month, East Island was submerged.

The island was uninhabited, but scientists are worried because it was a refuge for two of the most endangered animals in the world: the Hawaiian green sea turtle and the Hawaiian monk seal.

A paradise for animals

Almost 96% of Hawaii's green turtle population travels to the island chain, known as the French Frigate Shoals, for safe nesting during their breeding season, according to Chip Fletcher, an earth science professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Through the last six month we have seen an uptick in floods intensity with the "six months worth of rain in a day" and "a months of rain in three hours" events and was forecast if the Grand Solar Minimum was intensifying we would see a "one year of rain in a day" event. Now we have two in two weeks in the Middle East. Qatar and Jordan. Plus record floods in Kenya, Spain, France with six+ feet of snow dropped during the event. There is an uptick happening.

A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake has hit in the Pacific off the coast of El Salvador. The US Geological Survey said, the tremor occurred 24 kilometres under the surface last night, and its epicentre was some 94 kilometres southwest of coastal town of Acajutla. There are no reports of any damage or injuries.

Roads are white in Uludag, Turkey. Snowfall in high parts of the city gives drivers a hard time.

On the Bolu Mountain drivers are warned by light boards and traffic teams to keep track of their distance and to comply with speed limits.
