Shallow earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hits off Japan - no tsunami or injuries reported

A magnitude 6.1 quake struck off Aomori in northern Japan on Tuesday, the national weather agency said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit at 6:18 pm (0918 GMT) at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Major Japanese media outlets carried no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 6.2.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, which sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

The country has strict construction regulations intended to ensure buildings can withstand strong earthquakes, and emergency drills are routinely held to prepare for a major jolt.

Ecuador - At least 7 dead, over 60 missing after landslide in Chimborazo Province

Over 60 people are feared missing after a huge landslide buried homes in the community of Alausí, Chimborazo Province, Ecuador late on 26 March 2023.

As of late 27 March, the government of Ecuador confirmed 7 fatalities. More than 30 people have been rescued and 23 people hospitalised.

A team of more than 300 people from the Armed Forces, National Police, Fire Departments from different parts of the country and the Red Cross is working in the areas carrying out search and rescue operations and providing support and relief supplies to the affected communities. As of late 27 March (local time), 64 people were reported missing.

6.1-magnitude earthquake hits off Solomon Islands

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 jolted 73 km W of Buala, Solomon Islands, at 22:19:15 GMT on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 85.976 km, was initially determined to be at 8.2105 degrees south latitude and 158.9268 degrees east longitude.

Floods disrupt life in Iraq

Weather conditions in different Iraqi governorates where heavy and continuous rainfall since early hours of Sunday disrupted life in Iraq.

Due to expectations that rainfalls will continue, the Iraqi government announced, late on Sunday night, the suspension of work on Monday in all governorates.

The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers mentioned in a statement that the Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, directed to suspend official working hours on Monday, due to weather conditions, except for security and service institutions.

Flooding has affected thousands of people after the Acre River broke its banks in the northern Pando Department of Bolivia. Further south, the Pirai and Rio Grande rivers have caused flooding in parts of the Santa Cruz department.

Santa Cruz Department

The government of Santa Cruz department reported rising levels of the Pirai and Rio Grande rivers from around 20 March 2023. One person died in the Pirai river in Limoncito in El Torno municipality and another in the Pirai river north of the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Flooding was reported in the city after heavy rain on 23 March. Several people were rescued from the Piraí River in the municipality of Porongo.


Flooding affected areas of the department from mid-January this year. By 05 February had affected 12 municipalities and 3,320 households.

Elderly woman dies in dog attack in Ladakh, India

Local residents have demanded immediate action after a pack of stray dogs mauled an elderly woman in Zanskar region of Kargil in Ladakh on Saturday.

Tsering Kunzess (79) was killed near her residence where she had been living alone. She was cremated by the district administration as she had no family member.

Residents said the administration should speed up the sterilisation drive and should also catch stray dogs to avoid such incidents.

On March 9, the Block Medical Officer, Zanskar, had written to the Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) on the rising stray dog menace. "On the basis of the data provided by the immunisation section, dog bite cases have been increasing alarmingly. From January 2023 till date, 34 people have been victimised by stray dogs," the letter stated.

Lightning kills 4 family members in Uganda

At least four family members in Ayami Sub County, Lira District, have been confirmed dead after they were struck by lightning during downpour.

Tom Thomas Obur, the Ayami LC3 chairman, said the four were killed by a lightning which struck the grass-thatched hut they were taking shelter in, setting it ablaze at around 6pm on March 25.

The deceased have been identified as Jimmy Obong, 32, Jenifer Acio, 26, Brian Opok, 5, Brian Okum, 14, brother of Acio. Obong had visited his sister in-law at Nga-akwia Village in Walela Parish when the incident occurred while Opok was Acio's son and Okum- her brother.

At least 14 perish in Somalia flash floods

At least 14 people have been killed in southern Somalia after torrential rains triggered flash floods that have caused havoc in several towns and villages.

Bridges, roads and houses have been damaged or destroyed and many people have been forced to flee their homes in search of safer ground.

In the town of Baardhere in Jubaland state, 14 people were killed including three members of the same family, district commissioner Mohamed Weli Yusuf told reporters.

"Most of the casualties were caused after the victims were trapped across a bridge in the town Thursday evening which was swept up in the floods," he said.

Arizona officials are searching for a large coyote that reportedly injured two toddlers in separate attacks in Scottsdale this week.

Kelly Pirozzi told ABC News she was standing in her driveway on Wednesday when the coyote approached and bit her 21-month-old son on the arm in a shocking moment caught on her surveillance camera.

The coyote knocked the toddler down, and once the boy started crying, the animal released his arm from its grip, Pirozzi said.

She then rushed her son into the house. Pirozzi said he's OK and only suffered minor bite marks.

"It happened so quickly," she said.

Lightning kills 350 sheep and goats in Uttarakhand, India

More than 350 sheep and goats died due to lightning in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand on Saturday night. According to media reports, three people from Barsu village of Bhatwadi block were taking more than a thousand sheep and goats from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi.

At night they reached Khatukhal in Dunda tehsil. During this time it was raining continuously and there was a strong storm. Lightning struck at around 9 o'clock in the night and more than 350 sheep and goats died due to its grip.

Due to the death of so many animals together, the people of the village got scared. He informed Vineeta Rawat, the head of the Bhatwadi block, about the incident. Vinita Rawat told the DM and the District Disaster Management Department about the incident.
