Two elderly people killed in elephant attack in Assam, India

Two elderly people were tragically trampled to death by an irate elephant in Assam's Goalpara district on Sunday night.

The deceased have been identified as Ilawati Rabha (56) and Gunj Rabha (70). According to information, the incident occured at Lakhipur area wherein the duo was caught off guard by the wild tusker which had ventured into the civilian zone possibly in search of food.

While the woman, Ilawati, hails from Lakhipur itself, the other individual, Gunj, was a resident of Meghalaya but residing in the village.

The remains of a missing 12-year-old girl in Australia have been found after she was attacked and taken by a crocodile while swimming in a creek, police said.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening at about 5:30 p.m. local time in the remote community of Palumpa -- approximately a seven-hour drive southwest of Darwin with a population of about 400 people -- in Australia's Northern Territory, according to the Northern Territory Police, Fire & Emergency services in a statement released on Wednesday.

"Around 5:30pm last night, police received reports of a missing 12-year-old child who was last seen swimming at Mango Creek," authorities said. "Initial reports stated the child had been attacked by a crocodile. Community members and Peppimenarti Police attended the scene and began searching for the child, who has yet to be located."

A search and rescue team was immediately deployed into the area with officers from Wadeye assisting but, several hours later, the remains of the 12-year-old girl were found, according to a statement released by the Northern Territory Police.

A beachgoer was bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach on Thursday afternoon, leaving him in the hospital, according to the Volusia County Beach Safety.

In a release, VCBS officials announced that the beachgoer โ€” a 21-year-old Ohio man visiting the area โ€” was bitten on his right foot while playing football in "knee-deep water" near Flagler Avenue just before 4 p.m.

As a result, he was taken to the hospital for treatment, though the release shows his injuries aren't life-threatening.

No additional information has been provided at this time, including what type of shark was responsible for the attack.

Four people are believed to have been injured by the same shark while in waters off the southern coast of Texas on the Fourth of July, officials said.

Texas Game Warden Capt. Chris Dowdy told ABC Weslaco, Texas, affiliate KRGV that four separate incidents involving the shark, including two bites, were reported off South Padre Island.

In one of the incidents, the South Padre Island Police Department said it received a call reporting a "severe" shark bite to the leg at around 11 a.m. local time Thursday near the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard.

First responders from the South Padre Island police and fire departments provided treatment at the scene before the man was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, police said.

Footage from a beachgoer who witnessed the incident showed a shark swimming near the shore in the vicinity of that attack.


6-year-old killed, attacked by family dog in Lorain, Ohio

A 6-year-old boy is dead after being attacked by a family dog on Wednesday afternoon, according to Lorain police.

Officers responded just after 4 p.m. to a home in the 1700 block of East 31st Street, and began investigating, according to a news release.

"Officers were notified that the male was pronounced dead from injuries sustained during the attack, at which time the Lorain Police Detective Bureau and Lorain County Coroner's Office responded to continue the investigation," reads the release.

The Friendship Animal Protective League in Elyria also responded and assisted in the investigation, according to the release.

Police did not release any more details on Wednesday afternoon, citing the ongoing investigation.


Death toll rises to 180 in southern Brazil flood - 2,398,255 impacted

At least 180 people have died from weeks of record flooding in southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state and 32 people remain missing, the civil defense agency said.

Torrential rains began on April 29 and continued for days, inundating cities across the state. Rescue and recovery work started after the flooding began to subside in mid-June.

Severe weather has impacted some 2,398,255 inhabitants in 478 towns, including the state capital, Porto Alegre, said the agency in a report, adding that during the height of the storms, more than 450,000 people were evacuated.

Brazil's government has allocated 85.7 billion reals (about 15.4 billion U.S. dollars) to aid and rebuild Rio Grande do Sul, according to Secretary of Social Communication Paulo Pimenta, who was appointed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to oversee the reconstruction effort.

Rio Grande do Sul, an agricultural state located on the border with Uruguay and Argentina, has seen record economic losses from the disaster.

WinterHighland's webcam captured the fresh snow at Glencoe this morning, and snow flurries were also forecast for high peaks across the Highlands, including on the slopes if Cairngorm above Aviemore.

Lightning strikes 13 footballers, kills 2 in Nigeria

The incident happened during a torrential rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, July 2, 2024.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, some youths numbering about 13 were playing the game at Osemeke Primary School field in the community at about 6:30pm when lightning struck the players and their referee, killing two persons identified as Sunday (pictured) and Lucky.

One of the victims is said to be a Point of Service (POS) operator.

The third victim whose condition was critical, is said to have been admitted to a hospital in Asaba.
