Three children died when they were struck by lightning at Khura Khurd village in Palamu district on Monday afternoon.

Chainpur OC Sunit Kumar said Akash Oraon (11), Mohit Kumar (9) and Vikas Thakur (12) were playing in an abandoned shed when the incident occurred.

The bodies have been sent to Palamu Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

While the state weather department had issued an alert for lightning in the region, most poor families do not have access to such alerts, he said.

Some communities surrounding Edmonton were hit with a dump of May snow Monday morning.

Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings on Monday for several communities including Devon, Calmar, Spruce Grove, Wetaskiwin, Whitecourt, Drayton Valley, Morinville and Edson.

"There is a pocket of cold air over western parts of the province, which allowed the rain to change to snow quickly as of Sunday evening and overnight," Global Edmonton weather specialist Phil Darlington said.

While the warnings mainly encompassed areas west of Edmonton, areas east of the city also reported snow.

A powerful line of thunderstorms snapped trees and brought down power lines across Middle Tennessee on Sunday.
Residents in the Tennessee Valley are cleaning up after a long-lived line of thunderstorms, known as a derecho, brought severe wind gusts on Sunday. The intense storms caused straight-line wind damage along a path that stretched for more than 600 miles, and in Nashville, the winds were clocked at up to 71 mph.

"The word 'widespread' doesn't even begin to cover the amount of damage we had," said Scott Unger, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Nashville. The storms knocked out power to more than 100,000 customers, and the local power company is warning residents they could be without electricity for up to two weeks due to the extent of the damage.

An off-duty firefighter was killed by a falling tree limb in Spring Hill, south of Nashville. Two others in the Nashville area were injured. The same complex of thunderstorms pummeled parts of southwest Missouri with hail the size of baseballs.

Something is seriously wrong with the Oslo Fjord and no one seems to fully understand why. Both fish and mussels have been disappearing, while the fjord's characteristic seabirds known as ærfugl (common eider) have been found dead from Agder in the south to Østfold farther north.

Newspaper Dagsavisen has reported that the dead birds are believed to have simply starved to death. Experts conclude that only one thing is certain: the Oslo Fjord's ecosystem has come under severe pressure despite massive efforts to clean up sewage and industrial pollution for decades.

Around 240 dead birds had been found as of mid-April. On Sunday, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported that around 400 have now been found lifeless along the shoreline. Per Espen Fjeld of the conservation agency Statens naturoppsyn (SNO) told Dagsavisen a month ago that he fears the real number is several thousand.

They've lost major sources of their food, he noted, not least the mussels called blåskjell in Norwegian that once flourished along the fjord and are also widely viewed as a delicacy for human consumption. Fjeld noted that cod, while plentiful in waters off Northern Norway, has also disappeared along with other popular white fish like sei, lyr and hvitting (all similar to pollack).

A raging blaze so big it can be seen from space has engulfed vast swathes of Russia.

Wildfires in the Siberian countryside began late last month and have now burned 5million acres of fields and forests, sparking what Russian officials have called a "critical situation."

The infernos were caused by a mix of unusually hot weather triggered by climate change and Russian citizens flouting lockdown rules, according to Sergei Anoprienko, head of the federal forest agency Rosleskhoz.

"People self-isolated outdoors and forgot about fire safety rules," Anoprienko said.

Scientists have identified the highest levels of microplastics ever recorded on the seafloor.

The contamination was found in sediments pulled from the bottom of the Mediterranean, near Italy.

The analysis, led by the University of Manchester, found up to 1.9 million plastic pieces per square metre.

These items likely included fibres from clothing and other synthetic textiles, and tiny fragments from larger objects that had broken down over time.

The researchers' investigations lead them to believe that microplastics (smaller than 1mm) are being concentrated in specific locations on the ocean floor by powerful bottom currents.

Flash flood kills 4 persons in north Afghanistan

Four persons were killed and several houses destroyed as a flash flood swept parts of Tala-o-Barfak district in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province on Saturday, district governor Abdul Ahmad Barfaki said Sunday.

Heavy rain followed by flash flood hit several villages in Tala-o-Barfak district late Saturday, besides killing four people also washing away several houses and badly damaging farmlands, the official said.

According to the official, rescue operation is underway to find the bodies of the killed persons.
