Sinkhole swallows backyard in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania

Two Fountain Hill homes were evacuated Monday, July 14, 2014, after a sinkhole opened up at North Clewell and Long streets.
A set of twin homes in Fountain Hill were evacuated Monday after a sinkhole opened up in the 600 block of North Clewell Street.

Following heavy rainfall, the sinkhole swallowed a section of one home's backyard and extended beneath the porches and along the foundations of both residences near North Clewell's intersection with Long Street, not far from borough hall.

Assistant Chief David Boehrer, of the Fountain Hill Fire Department, said the sinkhole was spotted at about 6:25 p.m. and firefighters were called soon afterward to 605 and 607 N. Clewell St.

No one was hurt and both homes, which remain uninhabitable, were safely evacuated, he said today. The residents -- an elderly couple and a single man -- are staying with relatives who live in the area, he said.

Huge sinkhole appears in Madison, Florida

David Williams left his home at 1:45 p.m. to visit family last Monday. He says by the time 2:20 p.m. hit, it happened that quickly.

He received a call that a sinkhole had opened up across the street from his home. He figured it would be pretty minor, but came home to see his entire road was blocked off and the sinkhole was quite large.

"I never thought that I'd be worried about a sinkhole. Lo and behold, I come home and I was like, 'Whoa.'"

The sinkhole is located on Celosia Way off of Country Kitchen Road in Madison, Florida. Madison is a small town about an hour east of Tallahassee.

Geologists are now studying the hole as it continues to grow bigger. Celosia Way around Williams' home is shut down, but he's able to get in and out.

Even though the large hole is directly across the street, he says he has no plans on leaving his home, unless the cracks get closer.

Five cold weather records were set in Saskatchewan Monday morning.
Saskatchewan evenings have definitely been on the cool side lately, with at least five low temperature records falling Monday morning.

Assiniboia, La Ronge, Weyburn and Wynyard all broke July 14 records with single digit overnight lows.

Elbow, meanwhile, was colder this morning than it has been on this date since 1973.

Here are the communities, their Monday low temperatures in Celsius degrees and previous lows:

* Assiniboia 6.9 (7.0, 2013)

* Elbow 6.7 (7.2, 1973)

* La Ronge 4.9 (5.6, 2003)

* Weyburn 6.1 (9.0, 2013)

* Wynyard 7.3 (8.4, 1994)

According to CBC weather specialist Farah Singh, it's all thanks to cool air sweeping down from the north, combined with clear skies that let the heat escape at night.

Sunday was cool in the evening and early morning, too, with cold weather records for July 13 set in Elbow (7.0), Meadow Lake (4.0), Moose Jaw (7.5), Rosetown (6.3), Spiritwood (5.9), Uranium City (4.8) and Weyburn (6.1)

Switzerland hit by landslides following heavy rainfall

An 82-year-old woman was found dead in a Swiss stream on Sunday, police said, as heavy rain and landslides halted train and road traffic near the city of Bern, the capital.

Police said that the woman died in Thörishaus, a village southwest of Bern, as parts of the country were hit by a deluge.

In the nearby town of Köniz, 200 firefighters worked throughout the night to deal with flooded streams and landslides, evacuating several homes.

Landslides blocked the railway between Bern and the western city of Fribourg and between Montreux and Zweisimmen, while flooding cut the line between the capital and the town of Thun, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) said.

Buses were pressed into service to provide alternative transport between Bern and Fribourg.

The crater is large enough for several Mi-8 helicopters to fly into it.
The striking puncture in the earth is believed to be up to 80 metres wide but its depth is not estimated yet. A scientific team has been sent to investigate the hole and is due to arrive at the scene on Wednesday.

The cause of its sudden appearance in Yamal - its name means the 'end of the world' in the far north of Siberia - is not yet known, though one scientific claim is that global warming may be to blame.

There is additionally speculation it could be caused by a space object - perhaps a meteorite - striking earth or that it is a sinkhole caused by collapsing rock beneath the hole caused by as yet unknown factors.

The giant hole appeared close to a forest some 30 kilometres from Yamal's biggest gas field Bovanenkovo. Experts are confident that a scientific explanation will be found for it and that it is not - as one web claim suggested - evidence 'of the arrival of a UFO craft' to the planet.

Unseasonal cool weather to set record low temps in US Midwest and Plains states this week

A summertime version of the polar vortex will continue to set record low temperatures in the Plains and Midwest this week. Cool air will also reach into the South and Appalachians.

The air will feel refreshing to some people but downright chilly and autumnlike to others.

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis, "Many residents and visitors will be toting jackets and long sleeves."

Rather than days of hazy sunshine and high humidity, typical of mid-July, many areas will experience a deep blue sky, at times, low humidity and a cool breeze.

Temperatures failed to climb past the 60s F from the eastern part of the Dakotas, through Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Monday.

Minneapolis, home of the 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, set a record low maximum temperature of 65 on Monday, breaking the old record of 68 set in 1884.

Nearly a dozen cities across the Plains set or tied record lows Tuesday morning including Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; Rapid City, South Dakota; and Dodge City, Kansas.

Tens of thousands of people in the Philippines hunkered down in evacuation centres while three people were reported missing Tuesday as a typhoon pounded its eastern coast amid warnings of giant storm surges and heavy floods.

The eye of Typhoon Rammasun struck Legazpi city in the eastern Bicol region in the early evening, with Manila and other heavily populated regions expecting to be hit on Wednesday afternoon, the state weather service said.

"Roofing sheets are flying off the tops of houses here... the wind is whistling," Joey Salceda, the governor of Albay province in Bicol said over ABS-CBN television.

He said there had been no reports of deaths while damage to the region -- an impoverished farming and fishing region of 5.4 million people -- was expected to be "moderate".

However, Bicol police said three local men were listed as missing off the island of Catanduanes on Tuesday, a day after they pushed out to sea to fish and failed to return.

The Philippines is hit by about 20 major storms a year, many of them deadly. The Southeast Asian archipelago is often the first major landmass to be struck after storm build above the warm Pacific Ocean waters.

5-foot giant earthworm found in Ecuador

Just imagine the fish you could catch with a worm that is five feet long. That might be what these adventurers thought when they discovered a massive earthworm that stretched yardsticks at a full metre-and-a-half in length.

The photos were submitted to Project Noah, a global study app that encourages nature lovers to document the wildlife they encounter by uploading photos to their phones.

In this case, this massive worm was found in "extremely rich forest soil" in the foothills of the Sumaco Volcano in Ecuador. According to the site's forum, it's been identified as a Martiodrilus crassus, which is Latin for "worm which feeds on dogs and small children."

Minke whales can grow up to 10m (33ft) in length and weigh up to 10 tonnes
A six-metre (20ft) minke whale has been found dead on an Isle of Man beach, the Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) has confirmed.

The juvenile whale was discovered at Glen Maye on Saturday evening, the trust's marine officer Lara Howe said.

The Manx Society for Marine Conservation and MWT have carried out tests and believe it died from "natural causes."

A decision on how to safely dispose of the carcass will be taken later.

The Manx government is due to decide whether to bury the whale or leave it in the hope the high tide will wash it away.
