300,000 at risk in Vesuvius eruption

AT LEAST 300,000 Italians living near the Vesuvius volcano would be killed the next time it erupts if they are not evacuated beforehand, according to the first three-dimensional simulation by supercomputer.

However, up to 200,000 others living in the north-north-western areas of the high-risk "Red Zone" could have more time to escape thanks to the volcano's towering Mount Somma rim, which acts as a natural barrier, scientists say.

La Nina's Brewing, Forecasters Warn

WASHINGTON - Forecasters warned Tuesday that a La Nina weather pattern - the nasty flip side of El Nino - is brewing, bringing with it the threat of more hurricanes for the Atlantic.

Officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the official end of a brief and mild El Nino that started last year. That El Nino was credited with partially shutting down last summer's Atlantic hurricane activity in the midst of what was supposed to be a busy season.

Italy's Stromboli erupts, people told to quit coast

STROMBOLI, Italy - Spectacular eruptions from the volcano on the southern Italian island of Stromboli may cause tidal waves, and all locals and tourists should stay away from the coast, emergency services said on Wednesday.

Two big lava flows burst out of Stromboli's side on Tuesday, sending up vast plumes of steam as they plunged into the Mediterranean waters below. Authorities said there was no immediate risk to people living on the island, off the coast of Sicily.

Famine Coming! Australia summer crop down 60 pct on drought, winter crop seen off 60 pct

SYDNEY - An ongoing drought has caused Australia's summer crop production over the year to June 2007 to fall 62 pct from the previous summer season, while the winter crop output is also forecast to drop 60 pct, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) said.

The government agency said most of the main growing areas in southern Queensland, northern New South Wales and the Riverina remain in the grip of the drought, with production forecast to fall to around 1.9 mln metric tons, making it the smallest summer crop in over 20 years.

Strong wind derails train, killing 4 in Xinjiang

At least three passengers were killed and more than 30 injured in a train derailment in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Wednesday, rescuers said.

There is some confusion over the number of fatalities. The rescue team previously said four people had died but Urumqi Railway Bureau have issued a statement saying three people have been confirmed dead and 34 were injured, of which two are in a serious condition.

According to the Urumqi Railway Bureau, 11 carriages of Train No. 5806 were derailed by hurricane-strength gusts of wind at around 2:00 a.m, soon after it left Turpan station. The train runs between Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang region, and Aksu, a city in southern Xinjiang.

Famine is Coming to the U.S.: Honeybees Vanish, Leaving Crops and Keepers in Peril

VISALIA - David Bradshaw has endured countless stings during his life as a beekeeper, but he got the shock of his career when he opened his boxes last month and found half of his 100 million bees missing.

In 24 states throughout the country, beekeepers have gone through similar shocks as their bees have been disappearing inexplicably at an alarming rate, threatening not only their livelihoods but also the production of numerous crops, including California almonds, one of the nation's most profitable.

Comment: While we cannot yet say what might be behind this strange phenomenon, there are two suspects in view: EM waves in the atmosphere - either natural or artificial - or some other kind of disruptive frequency such as cell-phone towers.

It would be an event of the utmost irony if our civilization's mad rush to have the latest gadgets brought the whole kit and kaboodle to its knees via starvation.
