Cape Town - A Parow woman narrowly escaped death when her car became engulfed by a sinkhole in Low Road, Wetton.

Cape Town local Ayesha Parker was driving home one evening when she suddenly felt the road collapse underneath her. The next moment, her car had sunk deep into the earth and all that surrounded her was gravel.

"I was in a hole and I didn't know I was in a hole. The hole covered the entire car right up to the roof. I was terrified."

A couple, who had witnessed the incident, rushed to Parker's rescue by bravely pulling her out of her car to safety.

"They saw the car disappear into the ground. They just told me to get out immediately. I stood on my seat and they dragged me to safety. As they did that, the car sunk further and immediately started to fill with water."

Comment: While this sinkhole may have been caused by a broken water main, which is common explanation for sinkholes, but something is off, in that the sinkhole phenomena has risen dramatically in the last 10 years. SOTT.net has been following reports since this new generation of sinkholes started opening up in increasing frequency. Here's a look at the last 5 years of sinkhole reports gathered on SOTT.

Flashback Unprovoked seal attack on elderly man in New Zealand

Image
Seals have huge teeth and can have a very nasty bite and can carry diseases, Department of Conservation Partnerships manager Ngamotu New Plymouth Darryn Ratana says.
An elderly man is in a stable condition in Taranaki Hospital after he was attacked by a seal on a public walkway in New Plymouth.

The 85-year-old suffered serious leg injuries when the seal lunged at him on the coastal walkway near Belt Road this morning.

A trail of blood stains the pavement where the attack took place during the man's morning walk.

It's common to see seals along the rocky shoreline, but this fur seal climbed over the boulders and onto the busy walkway.

"The gentleman's gone past and the seal's lunged out at the gentleman which tends to happen when they are males and they can be very aggressive," says Department of Conservation New Plymouth ranger Darryn Ratana.

The seal - weighing roughly 150kg - bit the man in the lower leg. Witnesses say the man did nothing to provoke the seal.

More than 180 sea lions found dead on the coast of Peru

Image
Less than a week after approximately one hundred sea lions washed up dead in the Illescas Reserve, in the province of Sechura (Piura), dead sea creatures were found once again in the area.

This time, a total of 187 lifeless sea lions were found between the beaches of San Pedro and San Pablo, and in La Tortuga inlet.

This was confirmed by sources inside the National Service of Protected Regional Areas (Sernanp). However, they admitted that they were not aware of the cause for these sea lion deaths.

Comment: Remember that a rise in temperature in the sea is not necessarily due to the famous (and false) so called "global warming", but more likely to the presence of active undersea volcanoes and gases such as methane, as well as other factors probably less well-known until now.

Attack! Kim Richards with her pit bull Kingsley; now another alleged victim aged 80 who claims she was attacked in March has come forward and talked about the incident, saying she now plans to press charges
Kay Rozario is planning lawsuit against reality star, who is reeling after beloved dog's weekend attack on her niece, Alexia Umansky, who is fellow 'RHOBH' star Kim Richard's daughter.

Reality TV star Kim Richards is facing legal heat over another attack by her pit bull Kingsley.

Family friend Kay Rozario says she was viciously attacked by the dog last March and now plans to sue the longtime cast member of Bravo's "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."

Rozario, 80, said Kingsley lunged at her without provocation as she stood next to Richards' bed following an overnight visit on March 20.

"Kim was lying on the bed talking, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, the dog starts biting me," Rozario told the Daily News.

"I'm trying to pull back, but the dog has hold of me with its teeth. I fall backwards onto floor with blood spurting everywhere. There was blood all over the place," she recalled.

"It was terrifying, just terrifying," she said.

Paramedics rushed to the house and dressed "big gaping wounds" on her left hand and right arm, she said.

"Thank God I was leaning on the bed with both arms in front of me or the dog would have gotten my throat and face," she said.

Girl and young boy hospitalized after two separate dog attacks in Bristol, Florida

Image
A 14-year-old girl walking home on the sidewalk along CR 12 South in Bristol last week was hospitalized after being attacked by two bulldogs.

Heather Snider said her daughter, Haylee, was close to Third Street at Neal Subdivision when the dogs raced out after her shortly before 7 p.m. Oct. 29.

"The dogs tore open her arm which required stitches, muscle reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery," according to Snider.

"She had three major gashes on her arm and a couple of bite marks on her stomach and back," Snider said.

Two people passing by in a car heard the girl's screams and came to her aid, separating her from the dogs and driving her to the ambulance station.

While en route, they called 911 to report the attack.

Complaints about delinquent dogs at record level in the Highlands, Scotland

Image
'In most cases it’s the owners that need a good talking to - not the pets.'
Delinquent dogs are making life a misery for people living in the Highlands, with complaints at a record high.

More pet owners than ever before are being slapped with dog control notices - otherwise known as dog asbos - and the number of staff working in the council's enforcement team has risen tenfold since a 2011 crackdown.

Three years ago, the local authority handled just eight complaints about dogs being out of control - but that figure soared to 38 the next year and 97 in 2013-2014.

The new figures show that Inverness and Ross and Cromarty are the worst areas for complaints and collies were by far the most complained about dog.

June Ross, the council official who oversees the dog control enforcement team, said pet owners should take action.

"A lot of the problems stem from the way the dog is being looked after," she said.

"In most cases it's the owners that need a good talking to - not the pets."

SOTT EXCLUSIVE: Global canine insurrection? Another week of savage dog attack reports

Image
A best friend?
Sensational headline, right? Maybe not. Below are some reports of dog attacks from around the word in just the last few days. This selection is in no way comprehensive, just a sample of some of the canine attacks that have come by my desk of late. Some are doubly notable because they are assaults on owners or other family members. In other words, they're not your typical stories of freak attacks on strangers. Something else seems to be going on.

A particularly vicious mauling by two pitbull terriers of a young child and of a man trying to intervene took place on the November 3rd in Indianapolis:
An Indianapolis man is being called a hero after rescuing a 12-year-old boy from two attacking pit bulls Sunday afternoon.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer responded to a report of aggressive animals actively attacking a young mentally challenged child in the 3000 block of N. Gladstone Ave Sunday afternoon. While in route to the scene, the officer was told that the dogs were attacking an adult male that was trying to protect the child.

The officer arrived and saw a man in the middle of the intersection of 31st and Gladstone being attacked by two pit bulls. The man, later identified as Russell Hill, was on the ground with both dogs biting him.

Hill's clothing had been ripped off and he was bleeding profusely from numerous wounds. The officer exited his vehicle, and immediately shot a black and white pit bull twice. The wounded dog started limping away, but eventually turned around and came back towards Hill and the officer.

The officer then shot the dog two more times. The dog stumbled a few feet away and laid down on the ground.

The second pit bull, brown in color, stopped attacking Hill when the officer fired his weapon at the animal. It fled back to its residence in the 3100 block Forest Manor.

Animal Control Officers arrived at the home and were able to capture the brown dog.

Northern Rockies snowstorm to expand to Minneapolis, Great Lakes

The snowstorm unfolding across the northern Rockies will spread a swath of snow to Minneapolis and the upper Great Lakes through the first part of the week.
Image
Before reaching the Great Lakes, the system is expected to deliver snow from the Rocky Mountains to the northern Plains with accumulating snowfall reaching as far south as Denver.

The snow will then begin to build into the northern Great Lakes, moving into the region on Monday and continuing into Tuesday night.

Due to the path of the storm, it appears as though some of the bigger cities around the Great Lakes, such as Chicago and Detroit, will miss out on the snow.

The heaviest snow is expected to focus on a zone stretching from northern Wisconsin to central Ontario. A foot or more of snow will fall over this area with localized pockets receiving as much as 2 feet of accumulation.

Gusty winds also accompanying this storm will result in blowing and drifting snow.

While blizzard conditions are not expected, winds gusting up to 30 mph can greatly reduce visibility, resulting in major travel disruptions.

This wind will also cause AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures to be held to the teens and single digits on Monday in places such as Minneapolis, making it dangerous for people to spend extended periods of time in the outdoors without wearing proper clothing.

Siberian Express to bring an early -30 degrees F to Wyoming, Montana

Image
Even though it's still early November, a January-like cold wave just entering Montana and the Dakotas on Sunday will bring 30 below zero temperatures to scattered locations in Montana and Wyoming by Wednesday morning.

The cold will fill the nation's midsection by mid-week, with no let up in sight. The coldest air to arrive in a series of reinforcing surges is still a week away.

Temperatures are forecast to run 15 to 30 deg. F below normal for at least 5 days over a large portion of the central U.S. starting late in the coming week.

On individual days the temperatures will be as much as 50 deg. F below normal for this time of year, which is quite exceptional. The air mass temperature (850 mb, ~5,000 ft. altitude) will be as much as 4.5 standard deviations below normal, which is less than 1 in 100,000 in probability terms.
