Firefighters battle for second day three large wildfires which broke out in different areas of Scotland's west coast

More than 1,000 properties in the Highlands were without power yesterday after a wildfire damaged the Lochcarron substation.

The loss of power to hundreds of homes and businesses in the north west of the region happened on one of the busiest bank holiday weekends of the year.

Proprietors of hotels and restaurants were unable to provide food for their guests as SSE scrambled to reconnect them to the grid.

The areas affected were Torridon, Diabeig, Shieldaig, Alligin, Kishorn, Strathcarron and Applecross.

It seems rather early for wildfires especially considering the UK was just recovering from a particularly brutal winter, and southern England along much of Europe are experiencing unseasonable lightning storms, hail and flooding:

Dr Madhav Khandekar expert reviewer for the IPCC says that winters in the Norther Hemisphere are becoming significantly colder and snowier. This Noctiluscent cloud season is a no-show and scientists are baffled as to why nothing is showing over the Arctic. Kilauea eruption lava rivers have reached the Geothermal power station covering one well head and emergency services are waiting to see if the chemicals will blow out the well in an eruption fashion of its own.

Uncharted territory: Kilauea lava flow begins engulfing Hawaii's geothermal power plant

Lava from Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano has reached the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, covering a well and threatening another. At the same time, fast-moving lava flows are now threatening nearby communities, prompting new evacuations.

"Lava flow from Fissures 7 and 21 crossed into PGV [Puna Geothermal Venture] property overnight and has now covered one well that was successfully plugged," declared the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency in a statement released on Sunday, May 27 at 6:00 pm local time. "That well, along with a second well 100 feet [30 meters] away, are stable and secured, and are being monitored. Also due to preventative measures, neither well is expected to release any hydrogen sulfide."

Comment: This may just be the beginning. And not just for Hawaii.

Landslides triggered by heavy rainfall kills 32 in Ethiopia - Update

landslide
Ethiopia's state-affiliated broadcaster reports that a landslide triggered by heavy rains has killed 23 people in the country's Oromia region.

Fana Broadcasting Corporation reported that the landslide happened Saturday evening after hours of heavy rains in the area. The report said 16 of the fatalities were women. It said six others were injured and taken to health centers after sustaining heavy bodily injuries.

Ethiopia is receiving heavy seasonal rains which sometimes cause severe landslides in some parts of the country.

Close to 50 people died in a similar landslide in May 2016 after heavy rains caused flooding and landslides.

Comment: UPDATE: 28th May from Punch:
Landslides caused by heavy rain killed at least 32 people in southern Ethiopia over the weekend, the government said on Monday.

The Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) said nine people died in the Gamo Gofa zone, with 17 injured.

The state-affiliated Fana Broadcast Corporate on Sunday reported that 23 people were killed in a landslide in the Sidama zone.

Six people were badly injured, Fana reported.

Countries across the Horn of Africa have recently struggled to cope with heavy rains.

Last week, flooding and strong winds caused by Cyclone Sagar killed at least 25 people in Djibouti and Somaliland, while heavy flooding left 21 dead in Somalia, according to the UN's humanitarian coordinator OCHA.

5-year-old viciously attacked by family's pit bull terrier in Mooresville, North Carolina

PIT BULL ATTACK
A 5-year-old girl sustained serious injuries Sunday afternoon when she was attacked by her family's pit bull in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Neighbor Larry Davis said he called 911 without knowing the cries for help were coming from a child.

"I heard a bunch of screaming and hollering so I called 911," Davis said. "Why he did that, I have no idea."

Police said the pit bull had the child by the head and shoulder, and continued to be aggressive when emergency responders arrived.

The dog had to be subdued by fire and police officials until animal control arrived, officials said.

Two young women suffered serious injuries after lightning struck them while they were taking selfies in western Germany, officials said Monday.

A spokesman for Bochum police said first responders found the 23 and 21-year-old women lying on the ground with their clothing torn in the city's Wattenscheid district on Sunday evening.

Paramedics had to resuscitate the 23-year-old and she remains in intensive care with life-threatening injuries, Bochum police spokesman Volker Schuette said.

The younger woman told police the last thing she remembered was walking with her friend on a footpath and recording each other with their smartphones, Schuette told The Associated Press.

"Clearly they were surprised by the storm," he said.

Humpback whale carcass washes up at beach in South Africa

News spread quickly about the whale carcass.

News spread quickly about the whale carcass.
A juvenile humpback whale's carcass landed at Zinkwazi Beach over the course of last night (Sunday) and was discovered by beachgoers early this morning.

At present it is not certain what may have led to the young animal's death, though wounds observed by the first comers suggest it may possibly have been hit by a vessel at sea.

The carcass attracted a small crowd of onlookers and, even faster, a crowd of eager knife-wielders keen to get their hands on some of the whale's meat.

Specialised Rescue Unit's Quentin Power reminded people that it is illegal to be in possession of any part of a whale, including any meat or blubber.
