Earth Changes
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Friday and most of Saturday telling the public to brace for extreme weather with thunderstorms and flooding expected.
The north west appeared to bear the brunt of the worst. Roads in Ballykelly and Greysteel and Limavady were near impassable while there are incidents of flooding in Magherafelt which the Fire Service attended.
The Meadowlane Shopping Centre in Magherafelt was flooded.
There was also flash flooding on the Falls Road and difficult driving conditions reported in Lisburn.
"It broke the window. It shredded the blinds, and then it forced the glass inside. We were holding the curtains down, and it was still coming through," says Roundup resident Gail Armstrong said.
Residents were busy Friday picking up shards of glass, boarding up windows and assessing what some said is the worst storm they have seen come through the city
Wind gusts reached up to 60 miles per hour and precipitation rates reached well above 2.5 inches per hour and about 2.5 inches wide.
The deceased identified as Sushant Behera of Gengutia village was on his way to Dhenkanal town along with two other co-workers, when a pachyderm attacked the trio near the level crossing.
While the two labourers managed to escape from the spot, Sushant was trampled to death by the wild elephant, sources said.
"Since last five years, the land here is not being used for agricultural purpose as elephants are destroying standing crops. We had earlier requested the forest department to at least alarm us when elephants are straying near the human settlements. But they do not even bother if we inform them about the movement of jumbos in the area," alleged Ranjan Mallick, a local resident.

The species of the animal is believed to be a humpback whale, according to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society.
The Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) issued a code red warning alert, which means that a volcanic eruption is underway with significant emission of ash into the atmosphere.
However, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the latest eruption lasted about two minutes and the Adi Sucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta remains open.
Mount Merapi is about 28km from the city of Yogyakarta.

The regional meteorological department has predicted similar weather to continue on Saturday as well. The eight people who were killed include a woman and her mother-in-law, at Goaltore in West Midnapore.

Nicholas Kipruto Rotich assesses the damage caused by landslides in Kaptoror village, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Families in the area fear for their lives as fault lines are evident across the villages.
The mass exodus has been motivated by the development of huge fissures around their houses.
"It all began on Thursday last week following an overnight downpour. When I tried to open the door in the morning, I noticed that it wouldn't open properly. And then I saw a crack on the ground. When I managed to come out, there was an even bigger crack," Kimutai told The Standard team when we visited the area earlier this week.
She was forced to move into a chicken coop a safe distance away until neighbours came to her rescue. "The cracks are dangerous and one can fall into them. I have nowhere else to turn to because this has always been my home. The entire village is no longer safe for us," she said.
The fissures that stretch more than ten kilometers have cut through Kapsegut, Ketigoi and Kalwal villages and residents are living in fear that the area might sink.
Comment: In neighbouring Uganda huge fissures have also just been reported.
