Over 20 dead or missing, 2.63 million affected by floods in south China - 110 rivers exceed warning levels

More than 20 people were killed or remain missing after torrential downpours unleashed floods in south China.

The rain-triggered floods had affected some 2.63 million people in 11 provincial-level regions as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Ministry of Emergency Management said.

The heavy rain forced the relocation of about 228,000 people, destroyed over 1,300 houses and brought direct economic losses of over 4 billion yuan (about 566 million U.S. dollars), the ministry said.

In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south China, six people were killed and one is missing after days of downpours.

Over 1 million people have been affected by the floods, including 147,900 who were relocated to safe areas, the regional flood control and drought relief headquarters said Tuesday.

An official from the Nova Scotia medical examiner's office removes the body of a dog suspected in a fatal attack in Middle Musquodoboit on Tuesday.
A Middle Musquodoboit woman killed by one of her two pet pit bulls Tuesday morning adored her dogs and her world revolved around them, said the victim's neighbour.

"Those dogs were the focal point of her life," said the man who did not want to be identified given the tragedy that unfolded in his community.

"It's very sad circumstances," he said.

RCMP said that the victim was a Middle Musquodoboit resident. Community members confirmed the victim to be Meghan MacAdams, an employee of the province's Department of Lands and Forestry.

Officers were called to the scene of the fatal incident on Wittenburg Road at just after 8 a.m. About an hour and a half after police discovered her body the dog was found dead after being run down by a vehicle near Highway 224, said police.

But the victim's neighbour said he was shocked to find out which of the dogs was responsible for the woman's death. He said one of the pit bulls she owned, which was at the victim's home at the time of the incident, was known to be very aggressive and had attacked the owner last year. The other that turned on its owner was always mild-mannered and well behaved, he said.

Thunderstorms roared all weekend in South China, and one woman was unfortunately struck by lightning in her Shenzhen home.

The incident occurred on Saturday, June 6 around 4.30pm while the victim's daughter was home. The daughter recalled hearing three roars of thunder, seeing lightning flash towards the kitchen and feeling a large vibration throughout the apartment, which sent their front door flying open. She quickly rushed to the kitchen and found her 50-year-old mother on the floor with her face bright red and limbs severely burned.

The window where the lightning entered was smashed and glass littered the kitchen floor of the apartment. Her mother was immediately rushed to Bao'an District People's Hospital for treatment. This just goes to show: While being struck by lightning inside your home is rare, it's still possible.

Qatar Seismic Network recorded 5.7 magnitude earthquake at southwest part of Iran on June 9, 2020 at 8:18pm Qatar time.

The Iran news agency IRNA confirmed that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Fars province on Tuesday.

"Tremors were felt in the eastern coast of Qatar and is expected to be felt in many neighbouring countries which are close to the epicentre," Qatar Meteorology Department tweeted.

The eruption of a volcano in Ecuador's Amazon region left several cities covered in ash on Tuesday, fueling concerns of a potential health impact as the South American nation slowly emerges from a brutal coronavirus outbreak.

The Sangay volcano has had moderate eruptions for over a year that have had little impact because of its remote location, but a recent change in wind patterns has pushed ash toward the coast and affected areas including the largest city, Guayaquil.

"The ash comes out of the Sangay volcano and spreads into the Guayas province, and we see a quantity of ash that is arriving near Guayaquil," Benjamin Bernard of the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador told reporters, referring to the province where Guayaquil is located.

The institute said it expects minor volcanic eruptions to continue in the coming days but does not expect a major eruption.

Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are spilling across the Arctic Circle and descending to mid-latitudes. "During morning twilight, the north was unusually bright with beautiful blue-green clouds," reports Debra Ceravolo of Osoyoos, BC, Canada. "It is rare to see them here at 49 degrees latitude."

NLCs are Earth's highest clouds. Seeded by meteoroids, they float at the edge of space more than 80 km above the ground. The clouds form when summertime wisps of water vapor rise up to the mesosphere, allowing water to crystallize around specks of meteor smoke.

Last summer, noctilucent clouds spread as far south as Los Angeles and Las Vegas, setting records for low-latitude sightings. It could happen again this summer. The clouds are heading south and already within 2 degrees of Seattle in the continental USA.

Comment: The cold temperatures being recorded are interesting, but the other key element in seeding these 'clouds' is meteor/comet dust. Which suggests that a lot more of that is in our atmosphere these days...

Snow hit parts of Idaho hard this weekend — yes, in June.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello said it hasn't issued a winter weather product in June in at least 15 years.

"Winter in June is Snow much fun!" the Pocatello forecasters said on Twitter. "We haven't issued a Winter Weather product in June in at least 15 years. And here it is!"
