Lightning strikes claim 5 lives in Karnataka, India

Three children died on the spot when a lightning bolt struck them in an agricultural filed in Yadgir district on Thursday. In another incident in the district, a 42-year-old man also died due to lightning.

The siblings Kareppa Tippannanavar (16), Nagaraj (13), and Nagendramma Tippannanavar (9), were rearing sheep outside Goudagera village of Yadgir talukin the evening when lightning struck.

In another incident at Yanni Wadagera village of Surpur taluk, a man was killed and three others sustained injuries after lightning struck them. While Nagappa Abaleppa, 35, died on the spot, Sabava Hosamani , Jayashri Hosmani and Ayyamma Hosmani sustained injuries. Police said the deceased and the injured were harvesting their field when lightning struck them. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Vijayapura.

Meanwhile in Koppal, four persons including three women were injured at Adavichikkabavi tanda in Gangavati taluk when lightning hit them. The injured are Paramma, Shivamma, Jalamma and Ramappa, who were admitted to hospital in Gangavati and are said to be out of danger.

Dead whale found on Oslo Beach, South Africa

It is not known why the animal died.

The news of a juvenile whale washed ashore attracted hundreds of people to Oslo Beach this evening.

The whale was reported this afternoon by building contractors who had seen it on the beach while working at a nearby house.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board was summoned to inspect the mammal, estimated to weigh between two and three tonnes, but it was already dead.

Michael Muller, manager of the Lower South Coast SPCA, said the onus was now on the municipality to remove the carcass.

Three whale sharks were found dead at Nangalili Beach in Benteng Dewa village, West Manggarai regency, West Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday.

Two of the whale sharks were found dismembered after fishermen and local people took their meat for consumption, Kupang National Marine Conservation Bureau (BKKPN) chief Ikram Sangadji said, adding that the sharks died before they were found by the fishermen.

Thousands of people have been evacuated on the Indonesian island of Bali and on Ambae island in Vanuatu as two volcanoes threaten to erupt.The entire population of Ambae is being moved from the path of the "increasingly active" Marano volcano, also known as Lombenben, according to the Pacific nation's government.

On the Indonesian island of Bali, more than 144,000 people have been taken to shelters as authorities warn that Mount Agung, in the island's north, could erupt at any time. Both volcanoes sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity that stretches 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) from New Zealand to South America. That they're showing signs of erupting at the same time is pure coincidence, said Benjamin Andrews, of the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program.

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano roared back to life early on Wednesday morning, spewing incandescent material and a large plume of ash and smoke into the sky.

The active volcano erupted about 4:45am local time and again at 8:00am local time in the fourth big eruption in recent days.

Mexico's national disaster-prevention agency says the eruption of the volcano, dubbed 'Don Goyo' by locals, was unrelated to the earthquake that shook the country earlier this month, according to Associated Press.

The eruptions came just a week after Mexico was hit by two major earthquakes, the second of which was a 7.1-magnitude quake on September 19 that killed more than 330 people and damaged 11,000 homes.

Popocatepetl has been active since the mid-1990s and some significant eruptions last year rocked communities living under the volcano's shadow.

There are more than 3,000 volcanoes in Mexico, but only 14 are considered active.

A bear hunter was injured and a grizzly sow killed in the Hungry Horse area Sunday following a surprise encounter on the east side of Hungry Horse Reservoir.

A father and his adult son, both from Kalispell, were pursuing a black bear through thick vegetation on steep hillsides at about 9 a.m. near the Dry Park Park area when they encountered the grizzly, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

The father was in his 60s and the son in his 30s.

The first indication a bear was near came when the men noticed brush moving about 25 to 30 yards away.

The grizzly appeared about 12 feet from them and grabbed the son's right arm at the elbow. While the bear was still holding onto his son, the father shot it in an attempt to get it to let go. The bear released the son and the father fired again. He shot the bear one more time at very close range when it turned toward him.

Over 270 mm of rain in 3 hours fell on the northern Aegean Sea island of Samothraki, Greece, causing severe damage roads, cars and buildings, including a health centre.

Images showed streets buried in mud and flood debris over 1 metre deep. Power and drinking water supply has been cut and schools closed. Greek Civil Protection said the city hall and health centre have suffered some of the worst of the damage on the island. However, no deaths or injuries have been reported.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency and teams from Greece's military and civil protection have been deployed to help with recovery efforts.

The heavy rain began to fall on Monday 25 September and continued into the early hours of Tuesday, 26 September. Meteo Greece said that their automatic weather station at Samothraki reported 273.4mm of rain in 3 hours and 309mm in 8 hours.

Snow continues to fall over the Colorado high country, with some areas in the state receiving as much as 8 inches of snow.

The most recent storm dropped 5 to 8 inches of snow at Monarch Ski Area, and 5-6 inches at Wolf Creek Ski Area, according to Open Snow estimates. Cameras at Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin ski resorts show a dusting of snow in the high elevations of Summit County.

Here in the southern Front Range, the Pikes Peak Ranger District does not have an estimate for snow totals at the summit, since the road is closed beyond Glen Cove and summit cameras are covered in ice. At Glen Cove, rangers estimate that 2 to 3 inches fell overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

This is the terrifying moment a climber watched an apartment-sized block of rock break free from Yosemite's El Capitan and hurtle thousands of feet to the valley below killing one person.

Ryan Sheridan took the image on Wednesday as the huge 100ft x 100ft block of granite disintegrated into an avalanche of boulders as it fell to the ground from 2,000ft up.

One person is dead after the rock - weighing hundreds of tons - fell onto them as they walked to the foot of the 3,000ft-high face to begin climbing.

At least one other person was injured and survivors were seen miraculously clambering out of the debris field and being rescued after the tragedy.

A man had to forcibly remove a shark from his stomach with a knife after it latched onto him while he was swimming off the coast of Marthon, Florida.

Shocking video shows Ervin Maccarty emerging from the water into a boat with a small shark attached to his body that won't let go.

He is heard swearing and the shark begins to struggle, sending Mr Maccarty down on the ground in pain.

His friends immediately come to his assistance, deciding to cut into the shark with a knife and 'bleed it out' until it lets go.

Blood spurts everywhere as they stab the shark and try to get it to let go over Mr Maccarty.
