Earth Changes
According to the Seismic Monitoring System of the Icelandic Meteorological Office the first quake, a 2.8 magnitude quake was detected at 23:34 at a depth of 4.1 km (2.5 mi), followed by a second 2.7 magnitude quake 17 seconds later at a depth of 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Nine minutes past midnight a magnitude 4 quake was then detected at a depth of 1.1 km (0.7 mi). At the exact same moment a second, 4.6 magnitude quake was detected closer to the center of the caldera, at a depth of 7.1 km (4.4 mi). These were then followed by a third sharp 3.5 magnitude quake at a depth of 2.2 km (1.4 mi).
The enormous block of ice, known as a Tabular berg, is thought to be a mile in length, experts said.
It was found off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, near the Larsen C ice shelf, by scientists flying over the region.
The iceberg's sharp angles and flat surface suggest it was recently calved from the ice shelf, NASA Ice researchers said.
And it was not the only iceberg formed as a geometric shape the scientists spotted on their flight over the Atlantic last week.
But perhaps nowhere was it more spectacular than this spot in Puglia.
Footage taken from the coastal Bar Ristorante L'Incanto shows storm water cascading off a nearby bridge, effectively turning it into a waterfall.
It made for a spectacular sight as the weather turned an already dramatic location in Gagliano del Capo, situated in Italy's heel, appear even more remarkable.

A man carries a branch as spider webs blanket shrubs at the banks of Lake Vistonida, Greece, October 19, 2018.
This peculiar phenomenon was apparently caused by unusually warm weather which led to an increase in the mosquito population and therefore triggered an overpopulation of spiders that feed on these insects.
The spiders are from the genus Tetragnatha, known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.
They are known to build webs near watery habitats, with some species even said to be able to walk on water.
According to Reuters, there were no immediate data on damage or casualties from the earthquake.
The epicenter of the quake was registered at the depth of about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) some 104 kilometers off the coast of Taiwan's Hualien county at 12.34 p.m. local time (04:34 GMT).
Earthquake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. No tsunami alert has been issued.
Beijing does not recognize Taiwanese independence and claims the island is part of China. Taiwan similarly does not recognize the central government in Beijing.
The adverse weather blanketed streets with icy chunks and trapped many drivers in their cars in the city's eastern neighbourhoods.
Some drivers abandoned their cars in the middle of streets that became flowing rivers of ice and were pictured slowly making their way through hail-covered streets.
Elsewhere in the city, buses were stopped and cars were abandoned after some streets were left severely flooded due to the rainfall.
A video captured icy water and hailstones running down escalators into an underground train station in the city.
Comment: Some other intense hail storms from around the world recently include:
- Hail storm kills 400 kangaroos and 150 goats in New South Wales, Australia
- Freak 'hailnado' blankets southern Queensland with tennis-ball-sized hail
- Violent hail storm and ice accumulation hits Liguria, Italy
- Walnut-sized hail and flash floods hit Turkey's northern provinces
- Severe hailstorm cripples traffic, paralyzes public transport in Mexico - 2 feet deep hail cover
- 'Felt like gunshots hitting the windows': Residents of Greensburg, Indiana look back at weekend damage caused by baseball-size hail
- Massive hail injures multiple people, kills zoo animals and damages 400 vehicles in Colorado Springs
- Foot of hail on Highway 22 near Longview, Alberta makes it look like December instead of July
New research shows that Earth's upper atmosphere is cooling as the sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age. Martin Mlynczak of NASA's Langley Research Center says,
"High above Earth's surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy. If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold."It is likely that atmospheric dust loading from increased comet and volcanic activity is also contributing to these 'intense' or 'freak' hailstorms, the cooling effect of which causes ice crystals to form.

Hurricane Willa, expected to reach category 5 status later on Monday, is "extremely dangerous"
The hurricane has grown rapidly as it made its way across the Pacific Ocean, its winds increasing from 40mph to 155mph in 48 hours. The US National Hurricane Center has warned that the storm system and could "produce life threatening storm surge, wind and rainfall" in Mexico on Tuesday.
"The road to the summit of Maunakea is closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station at 9200 ft. due to high humidity, fog, wet and icy road conditions," a ranger message stated this morning.
"Today, the trough aloft will continue to move slowly eastward, with a drier airmass continuing to filter across Maui County and the Big Island during the day," the National Weather Service said. "This should put an end to the threat for flash flooding or thunderstorms, and we have cancelled the Flash Flood Watch. A few heavier showers may still be possible on the Big Island, especially in the afternoon, but thunderstorms appear unlikely as the airmass dries out and stabilizes during the day."

Governor of Santander Didier Tavera (centre), stands next to rescue workers as they work at the area where nine people died by mudslides caused by heavy rains, according to local authorities, in Barrancabermeja, Colombia on Sunday.
The early morning rains caused a mudslide that buried several homes in a poor neighbourhood, most of them made of wood, in the port city of Barrancabermeja, reports Xinhua news agency.
"We recovered nine bodies... Five of them were minors and four adults," Fire Department Chief Alexander Diaz said. "Fortunately, three children managed to get out when the mudslide hit and are alive."

Initial indications suggest it was a magnitude 6.7 quake that struck 117 miles off the coast of Port Hardy, a town on the north east end of Vancouver Island.
It is believed that the quake struck at a depth of 21 miles. There are currently no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the quake and no tsunami warning has been issued.
Comment: According to USGS, as of 22nd October, in 1 hour there were 3 quakes above M6 in Port Hardy, Canada:
M 6.6 - 218km SW of Port Hardy, Canada
Time: 2018-10-22 05:39:40 (UTC)
Location: 49.250°N 129.478°W
M 6.8 - 197km SW of Port Hardy, Canada
Time: 2018-10-22 06:16:28 (UTC)
Location: 49.347°N 129.214°W
M 6.5 - 223km SW of Port Hardy, Canada

Comment: One wonders the increasing activity of Earth's undersea volcanoes coupled with the cooling above ground is partly responsible for the migrating ice bergs, and perhaps their unexpected shapes:
- Gigantic iceberg A-68 that broke off Larsen ice shelf blocked by dense sea ice, surprising scientists
- Stargate? Saturn sprouts another weird hexagon
- Arctic lake mysteriously disappears in Novaya Zemlya, Russia
- 'Perfectoid geometry' may be the secret that links numbers and shapes
- Stem cells organize using geometry as a guide
- Evidence of volcanic eruptions under Antarctic Ice
- Antarctica is even colder than scientists thought
