A "mega-rarity" bird blew into Miramichi over the weekend, and it's attracting bird lovers from across Eastern Canada and the U.S. who've never seen one in North America before.

Peter Gadd said a European mistle thrush landed near a mountain ash tree on his lawn and has been drawing crowds ever since.

"I saw a bird and thought, 'OK, that's a little different,'" said Gadd, who spotted the bird on Saturday.

Gadd and his wife, Deana, have been active birders for more than four years.

After spotting the bird and carefully studying its features, Gadd tried to find something similar in one of his several North American bird books.

Nothing seemed to match.

Elderly woman killed by her own pit bull terrier in Alsip, Illinois

PIT BULL ATTACK
Police in suburban Alsip had to kill a pit bull that attacked and killed a 77-year-old woman.

Officers were called to Komensky Ave and 116th St Monday afternoon to investigate reports of a woman being mauled by a dog in the back yard.

When they arrived officers say the dog was still aggressive and had to shoot it.

They tried to give the woman first aid but it was too late. Police said the woman lived at that address.

High winds and heavy snow in Europe on Monday stranded thousands of travelers, kept schoolchildren at home and even played havoc with international diplomacy.

It was the second day running of nasty weather across the continent, with Britain still digging out from its deepest snowfall in four years.

The snowed-over runways in Brussels on Monday provoked about 90 flight cancellations and some 100 delays, including for the plane carrying Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu back home.

He tweeted a video from his plane that opened with a shot of the white tarmac at the close of his European visit marked by the US recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

6.0 magnitude earthquake hits western Iran

Iranian media reports say an earthquake has struck western Iran, near the border with Iraq.

Iranian state media said the quake was a magnitude 6.0. The U.S. Geological Survey reported it was 5.4.

Last month, the same region was struck by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that left around 600 dead.

State media said the epicenter of the December 11 earthquake was near the town of Ezgele, but tremors were also felt in Kermanshah, the largest city in the area.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from the quake.

Iran is prone to earthquakes because it sits on major fault lines. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake destroyed the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.

The powers which created Iceland and continue to shape its geography were on full display over the weekend as a powerful earthquake swarm shook Þingvellir National Park, one of Iceland's most spectacular natural monuments. The earthquake swarm was felt in the National Park and as far as the suburbs of Reykjavík and parts of South Iceland.

112 quakes

The seismic monitoring system of the Icelandic Meteorological Office detected 66 quakes in the mountain on Saturday and more than 50 on Sunday. A total of 116 quakes have been detected since Saturday morning when the swarm began.

The swarm has included several relatively large quakes, measuring more than 3 on the Richter scale. Quakes of this magnitude have not been detected in the mountain since 1992.

Extreme weather hit the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland this past weekend. The Australian Daily Examiner described the scene in Grafton, New South Wales, where there were:
more than 50 calls for help after a large hail storm caused widespread damage on Saturday afternoon.

A large thunderstorm hit Grafton around 1.20pm, with hail the size of tennis balls battering some parts of the region.

SES Clarence Nambucca region controller Michael Harper said SES resources from neighbouring towns were called in to respond to the large numbers of requests for help.

"We had about 50 or more call outs on Saturday afternoon, and they were virtually all for broken windows, smashed skylights and roof damage," Mr Harper said.

"It was a busy afternoon for them, we had about 10 crews out cleaning up and helping people, with most jobs completed by 10pm that same day, with only one or two left over the finish the next day."

Mr Harper said Saturday's hail storm was the first major storm to hit Grafton since the start of the storm season.

"There were hail stones up to seven to eight centimetres in size which is quite large," he said.

"The storm went for about 15 or 20 minutes, and in that time it did cause some damage.

This stunning footage shows how a group of mountain trekkers became embroiled in a potentially lethal avalanche.

A group of hikers were scaling a mountainous region in northern Pakistan when they witnessed the stunning natural occurrence.

The trekkers stayed on a point known as Ulter Peak, in the Hunza valley, and decided to film the event which happened on November 23.

The stunning footage captures the snow tumbling down a rocky mountain face towards the hikers, who are filming it from the safety of higher ground.


The white, snowy cloud soon engulfs the hikers, who continue to film the strange occurrence.

'Alberta Clipper' region set to bring 10-15 cm of snow by Tuesday night

By Tuesday night, the region will be under a blanket of 10 to 15 cm of snow, Environment Canada predicts.

The flakes that comes along with what's dubbed an Alberta Clipper is expected to hit Eastern Ontario Monday night and taper off Tuesday evening, according to a special weather statement.. Since the forecast is for snow stretching over 24 to 36 hours, it doesn't reach the level of a snowfall warning, when 15 cm is expected per 12 hours.

The Netherlands was blanketed in snow over the weekend and more snow is expected this afternoon. Meteorological institute KMNI issued a code orange weather warning of extremely dangerous weather. And the Rijkswaterstaat warns people to rather work from home today if possible.

A code yellow weather warning is currently in effect for the entire country. Motorists are warned to to be careful of icy and slippery roads.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology placed Kanlaon Volcano under alert level 2 after a phreatic eruption at past 9 a.m. Saturday.

PhiVolcs Director Renato Solidum told Super Radyo dzBB that the eruption occurred at 9:47 a.m. and that Kanlaon's activity was caused bay a magma moving up between 20 to 30 kilometers in depth from the crater.

Solidum also said that while the eruption is not severe, he advised residents and visitors to avoid going near the summit.

Under alert level 2, the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone from the summit should be observed, Solidum said.

Seismic instruments detected ground movements, coupled by rumbling sound for 10 minutes, Solidum said, adding the ash falls affected a barangay near the volcano.
