The North Island capital city of Wellington was lashed by the worst tidal storms in years, with authorities asking some coastal residents to be ready to evacuate, as large swells were forecast over the next 24 hours.
"Those people whose homes have been impacted by past swell and storm events should be prepared for these potential impacts again," regional emergency authorities said in a website statement.
Enrique, the first hurricane of the 2021 Pacific tropical season, continues to churn just offshore of Mexico. It currently has 70 mph winds, which means it has decreased in intensity to a strong Tropical Storm. At it's peak Enrique had maximum sustained winds up to 90 mph, which was a strong Category 1 Hurricane.
Additional slow weakening should occur as Enrique moves toward the Baja California peninsula late next week. Enrique will encounter cooler waters as it moves north, leading to it's weakening trend.
Rough surf, storm surge, and deadly flooding rain is expected to impact the coastal regions of Western Mexico due to Enrique's proximity. Tropical storm warnings have been posted in Mexico from the state of Jalisco to the state of Michoacan. The heavy rain is falling in an area that was impacted by Dolores last weekend. Flash flooding and mudslides will be possible.
Enrique is the 5th named storm of the 2021 season in the Eastern Pacific. Felicia is the next name on the list.

In the hamlet of Bernistap in Houffalize, the square farmhouse-castle, well-known in the region, paid the price. Its roofs did not withstand the strong winds. Help intervened and the inhabitants were relocated with relatives. There were no injuries, the damage being concentrated in the same area.
"It's a beautiful heritage but there is nothing left. Everything is gone: the roofs, the walls are unstable, the house is uninhabitable", Josette Deville, first alderman, told us. Before adding: "You can't imagine it, but when you see it on the spot, it's very moving. It's an old farm, which is listed. It's worse than a bombardment."
She explains that an important momentum of solidarity has been put in place. In the town cemetery, significant damage was caused to part of the graves.

Hotspot Lytton in British Columbia -- about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northeast of Vancouver -- broke the record "for Canada's all time maximum high" with a temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit), said Environment Canada.
More than 40 new temperature highs were recorded throughout the province over the weekend, including in the ski resort town of Whistler. And the high-pressure ridge trapping warm air in the region is expected to continue breaking more records throughout the week.
Environment Canada issued alerts for British Columbia, Alberta, and parts of Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
"A prolonged, dangerous, and historic heat wave will persist through this week," it said, forecasting temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in several regions, or 10-15 degrees Celsius hotter than normal.
