Wrong place, wrong time: Trio of Arctic Beluga Whales seen off coasts of New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut

Three beluga whales have repeatedly been spotted off the coast of the northeast U.S., in areas that are much further south than the Arctic waters they typically inhabit.
In a rare series of sightings, three beluga whales have been spotted repeatedly off the coasts of New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut in the past few weeks. The group was seen hanging around the area as recently as Friday when the town of New Hempstead, New York, posted a video to Facebook that shows the whales swimming near a boat.

Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the whales may have wandered down from the St. Lawrence Estuary in Canada, which is 940 miles away, where one was first spotted two years ago. If the whales were to turn around today, it could take them as long as two months to swim back, NOAA biologist Jamison Smith told Rhode Island Public Radio.

But the group seems to be headed even further southeast and Smith said their inquisitive nature may take them further still. The group was first spotted May 10 and has been observed in both Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island and Long Island Sound between New York and Connecticut. Beluga whales typically stick to colder waters but this group may be following a source of food on their long journey, WABC-TV, New York, reports.

The rescue operation to save a Humpback whale that beached earlier today in Great Brak, was unsuccessful.

According to Tersia Marais, freelance photographer for the Mossel Bay Advertiser, who arrived on the scene shortly after it was reported this morning that a whale beached, the operation was abandoned at around 13:30.

"The beach is being cleared from bystanders and general public, as the whale will have to be euthanized," Marais reported.

Members of the NSRI arrived around 11:22 and battled in rough sea conditions to get the whale back into the surf. They were assisted by Pinnacle Conservation and some members of the angling fraternity and the public.

Bystanders said that the whale was sunk deeply into the sand and at the start of the rescue already weak and kept on washing back.

After 55 year slumber, Chile's Guallatiri volcano shaken by earthquake swarm - alert level raised to 'yellow'

Image
Guallatiri or Guallatire is one of the most active volcanoes in northern Chile. It is just west of the border with Bolivia and at the southwestern end of the Nevados de Quimsachata. It is a symmetrical 6,071-metre-high (19,918 ft) (3.7723 miles) ice-clad stratovolcano. Wallatiri is capped by a central dacitic dome or lava complex, with the active vent at its southern side. The volcano last erupted in 1960. -Wikipedia

Elevated seismic activity since the night 30-31 May triggered SERNAGEOMIN to raise the alert level of the volcano to "yellow." A swarm 22 earthquakes related to internal rock fracturing, possibly caused by rising magma, was registered shortly after midnight 30-31 May. A magnitude 3.7 quake occurred at 05:17 local time the next morning.

At the same time, slight deformation of the summit area of the volcano was detected as well, which would be consistent with a new magma intrusion at depth. No other changes (such as increased degassing, rock falls etc) have been noted.

Sun halo appears during beatification mass in El Salvador

As the relics of Blessed Oscar Romero were brought out for veneration during his beatification Mass in San Salvador, the cloudy skies parted and a ring of light - known as a "solar halo" - appeared around the sun.

"Honestly, I think this one of the most supernatural things I have ever experienced in my life," Father Manuel Dorantes told CNA May 29.

A priest of the diocese of Chicago and Spanish assistant to the director of the Holy See press office, Fr. Dorantes was present in San Salvador for the May 23 beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Romero oversaw the diocese of San Salvador from 1977 until March 24, 1980, when he was shot and killed while saying Mass. In February Pope Francis officially recognized him as a martyr, and his beatification took place in his former diocese just over a week ago.

The ring around the sun appeared once Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, had finished reading the official decree proclaiming Oscar Arnulfo Romero as a martyr and a blessed, Fr. Dorantes recalled.

Comment: Sun halos have been much more frequent this year. So far, they have been reported in the UK, Mexico, China, Japan, the U.S., the Virgin Islands, and elsewhere.
