Floods affecting over a million people across Bangladesh

According to disaster management authorities, over 1 million people across 13 districts have been affected by flooding in Bangladesh since late June.

Flooding hit several northern districts of the country in late June after heavy rain in the country and in river catchments in neighbouring India. Jamalpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts were the worst affected, with some flash flooding also reported in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.

Since then flooding has been reported in a further 8 districts. According to a report by Network for Information, Response And Preparedness Activities on Disaster (NIRAPAD) of 04 July, a total of 1,012,775 people have been affected and 221,158 households marooned. The affected districts include: Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Sunamganj, Sirajganj, Bogura, Jamalpur, Sylhet, Tangail, Rajbari and Madaripur.

The cows killed by lightning

Lightning has reportedly killed at least seven cows at Elepo village, Ifon Osun in Orolu Local Government area of Osun State, southwest Nigeria.

Naija News learned that all the cattle were killed where they were being kept after returning from the grazing field at the Elepo village when the incident happened.

An anonymous resident of the area described the incident as sad and very unfortunate, saying it has caused panic and fears within the community.

19,380,000 people now affected by the flooding across China

Torrential rains have been pounding large areas of China, triggering floods, mudslides and destroying roads as local authorities scramble to send in rescuers. State media reported that the deadly floods had affected around 19,380,000 people as of July 3, 2020. At least 121 people were reportedly dead or missing.

Due to climate change, the weather is becoming volatile and unpredictable. In South-Eastern as well as in Central Europe, winters are now miilder, spring weather is dry and turbulent, and summers are scorching hot. Plant cultivation is vulnerable, and droughts as well as floods can cause serious damages. In the recent period, the early summer rainy season started in Serbia and caused considerable damages.

Floods devastate crops and raspberry orchards

A tributary of Zapadna Morava, the Moravica River flooded and destroyed more than a thousand hectares of raspberry orchards in Western Serbia. Between 2-3 thousand hectares of potato and corn plantations, vegetable gardens and pastures have been flooded, stated President of the Association of Raspberry and Blackberry Producers in Serbia Dobrivoje Radovic.

The past weekend was characterized by hail and strong winds in various parts of Italy. As meteorologist Maycol Checchinato reports, "when temperatures remain high for a few days, the arrival of cool air generates instability, storms and whirlwinds."

"Cherries and apricots have been heavily damaged by hail on July 3rd. Some stones were as large as golf balls and weighed over 80 grams," explains Simone Venzi, a grower from Sarsina (Forlì-Cesena).

At the moment, Venzi grows the Corniola variety, although much of the fruit has been lost. "Luckily, a lot of the produce had already been harvested, so the damage was limited to the late productions. Late apricots were also lost."

The worldwide volcanic uptick associated with the next Grand Solar Minimum is continuing. We can now add Nishino-shima volcano to the list after its ongoing effusive-explosive, high-level eruptions which started in mid-June.

Nishino-shima volcano (Volcano Islands, Japan) awoke last December after a two-or-so year quiescence. And now, on the back of June's string of 12,000 ft vulcanian-strombolian-type eruptions and active lava flows on its northern slopes, the volcano has ejected a very dense ash plume to an altitude of 27,230 ft (8,300 m).

Today, July 6, both the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and HIMAWARI-8 satellite data have confirmed the July 4 eruption, which is considered to be the highest ash plume of the volcano since 2013.

At least 21 people were killed when a bus carrying students to their annual college entrance exam plunged into a lake in southwest China on Tuesday, authorities and state media said.

The bus crashed into a guardrail and veered into Hongshan Lake in Guizhou province, leaving 15 others injured, the local emergency management department said in a statement.

The incident took place around noon in Anshun city and eyewitnesses said the bus' passengers included students who were on their way to sit their gruelling "gaokao" examinations, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Security camera footage shared on social media by CCTV showed the vehicle veering across at least five lanes - cutting into oncoming traffic - to plough through barriers on the other side of the road.

Topsy-turvy summer swings from Saudi-heat to freezer in Arctic north of Russia's largest region of Yakutia.

Abnormally cold weather has been recorded in the north of Yakutia with residents of Verkhoyansk district waking up to fresh snow on 5 July.

Just days before that, locals were complaining about the hot and dry beginning of July, with air temperature heating up to +27C on 1 July, and wildfires raging.

Earlier, on 17 June this district saw a world record for the Arctic of 38C.

A baby girl from Aurora died from dog bites early Sunday after a dog got loose in a Joliet home.

The parents of 17-month-old Marley Wilander put her in a playpen in an upstairs room of a friend's house while they attended a Fourth of July party, according to a statement from Joliet police.

Sometime during the night, two pit bull mix dogs got out of the basement of the home in the 1800 block of Cumberland Drive, police said. About 1:30 a.m. July 5, the homeowner heard noise upstairs and found one of the dogs biting the baby.
