Rampaging mudslides wreak havoc in village in Swiss Alps
Scenes of mudslides hitting an alpine village in Switzerland may seem like something out of a disaster movie, but a spate of heavy downpours across the country in recent days has made it all too real for local residents.

The village of Grugnay in the municipality of Chamoson in Valais, southwest Switzerland, was struck by a gush of sediment, triggered by a series of heavy rainfalls on Tuesday. The mudslide rushed through waterways and roadways, overcoming crash barriers and pouring out onto the asphalt as panicked local residents looked on.

Videos were filmed by François Voeffray and Nathan Coudry. There were no injuries reported but some streets were blocked off as the clearing-up process began, according to Swiss broadcaster RTS.

At least 50 manatees die mysteriously off Mexican coast

manatees
As many as 50 manatees have died, floating to the surface of rivers and lagoons in Mexico's southern state of Tabasco, where some of the country's major oil wells have been operating for decades. Fish, reptiles, birds and other marine animals have also died suddenly, and scientists are scrambling to figure out the cause.

"It could be one of the greatest environmental emergencies we have had in recent times," Ernesto Zazueta, president of the Association of Zoos, Breeders and Aquariums of Mexico told El Universal newspaper.

On May 18, residents of the municipality of Bitzales found a lifeless manatee floating in the water. They assumed it was an isolated incident, or that the animal had been sick. But in the weeks the followed, more and more dead manatees were found in the state's waterways. Fishermen reported that suddenly they weren't catching anything, and dead fish also began floating to the surface.

The scare of a Davidson 10-year-old's life ended up turning into one of the coolest things he's ever seen. And he safely got it all on video for the rest of us to see.

"That's the closest lightning bolt I had ever seen in my life," Brody Lee told WBTV just hours after he shot the video.

Lee was standing right by his home's front window when - boom! - he got the scare of his life.

"I was like freaking out because it was legit, maybe a couple of meters away from our house," he said.

Helicopters, divers and hundreds of firefighters involved in rescue after torrent swept through campsite in Gard region

A German man in his 70s, who was helping supervise children at a campsite in south-east France, was missing on Thursday after being swept away by floodwaters, police said.

The 75-year-old man was accompanying a group of around 100 German children who were evacuated from a campsite in Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas, some 60km (37 miles) north of Avignon in the Gard region.

Trapped by a muddy, fast-flowing torrent after the Ardeche river burst its banks he sought shelter inside his caravan, but the vehicle was swept away.

It was later found "empty and in pieces" near the river, police said.

He was the only person unaccounted for after a rescue operation at three campsites in the area, where a heatwave ended abruptly this week in storms that caused flash flooding.

Flash floods caused by heavy rains that hit Turkey's northern Ordu province damaged 66 houses and 264 shops, the country's vice president said on Aug. 9.

Vice President Fuat Oktay and Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu on Aug. 8 visited the Black Sea province of Ordu where torrential rains have caused massive flooding.

Oktay travelled to the Ünye and Fatsa districts of Ordu to inspect the damages the flooding caused in the towns. He also visited a hospital in Ünye to meet with people who were injured in the disaster.

"At the moment, we don't have any casualties or citizens who are in need or whose needs have not been met. The climate has been changing [...] and so we also need a change of mindset," Oktay said.
