Maunakea and Mauna Loa got a fresh dusting of snow and ice overnight, and webcams show the frozen precipitation reached as far down as the mid-level area.

A light layer of snow could be seen at the "MK Visitor Center" cam at Halepohaku, commonly referred to as the Mid-Level area. The spot, located at the 9,300 ft elevation of the 13,800 ft. mountain, is usually without snow even when the summit gets covered.

Maunakea could not be seen from the Mauna Loa Observatory webcam at 1 p.m., but the lava in the foreground had a scattered dusting of snow as well. The observatory is located at just over 11,000 ft.

A volcano on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion is spewing red hot lava into the surrounding countryside and sending plumes of smoke into the air.

Dramatic footage filmed from a helicopter has captured the molten rock pouring out of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano and stretching across the striking landscape as smoke fills the air.

The squat volcano is one of the most active in the world, periodically erupting for long stretches of time. The current eruption began all the way back in October 2019 and is still going strong.

Mother wrestles river otter after daughter, dog attacked inside home in South Lakeland, Florida

An alarming attack sent a girl to the hospital with multiple bite marks from an otter. The outraged otter forced its way into a home leading a mother to take action to make sure her family was safe.

We don't often hear about aggressive river otters, but by fighting its way inside a home in South Lakeland, experts said this otter was definitely not acting normal.

"My husband's like, 'Case, you just alligator wrangled an otter in the living room!'" said Casina Ewert, the victim's mother.

The otter learned that you don't mess with a mother's instincts.

"I think life is full of surprises, and you should just be ready for whatever," said Casina.

Violent jet stream helps bring Boeing 747 across the North Atlantic in record time - less than 5 hours

ba 112
The currently ongoing very dynamic pattern over North Atlantic and Europe resulted in some remarkable records within commercial flights! The Boeing 747 of British Airways (flight BA112) from New York on its way to London most likely set the new subsonic flight speed record of travel time across the North Atlantic.

Due to the exceptionally favorable wind within the powerful westerly jet stream, it arrived in London in just 4 hours and 56 minutes. Normally, the average travel time between New York and London is around 6 hours and 13 minutes. According to Flightradar24, if this data is confirmed, the British Airways now retakes the fastest subsonic New York-London crossing from Norwegian airliner.

See what a violent jet streak can produce over the North Atlantic - a very dynamic pattern and therefore deep cyclones with significant sea waves towards western Europe:

Flooding closed the Interstate 84 in Oregon. Some vehicles were left stranded.
Storms and heavy rain in the North West of USA have prompted the governors of Washington and Oregon states to declare emergencies.

Flooding has closed roads and led to evacuations in both states. Residents trapped in homes in remote areas of Umatilla County were evacuated by Oregon Army National Guard helicopter.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee issued emergency proclamation for 20 counties due to flooding and winter weather.

"The effects of this severe winter storm event continue to impact the life, health and property of individuals in this state, as well as the property and infrastructure of Washington state, and is a public disaster that affects the life, health, property or the public peace," Inslee said in the proclamation.

There has been no snow month like January — at least for 150 years.

Ian Hubbard, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said 179.8 cm of snow was registered at the Sydney airport in January, which is an all-time record.

"Records go back to 1870," he said. "It broke the previous record which was 163.03 cm in 1965."

Five January days registered at least 15 cm of snow and last year only five days registered that amount all winter.

In terms of snow accumulation, records at the Sydney airport from December, January and February, the most snowfall recorded was in 1965 — 426.1 cm. So far this year through December and January there has been 217 cm of snow.
