500,000 evacuate floods in West Bengal, India - 11 dead - 400mm (15.7 inches) of rain in 24 hours

Disaster authorities report that more than 500,000 people have evacuated their homes after severe flooding in the state of West Bengal, eastern India.

According to a report of 02 October 2021 from India's National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), flooding has affected more than 2.6 million people across the districts of Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman, Purba Baddhaman, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata and Birbhum.

Many of those affected have evacuated their homes. NERC reported that at least 500,000 people displaced and 1,100 emergency relief camps have been set up. Local media reported 11 fatalities since 30 September including 3 in Hooghly and 5 in Bankura. Flooding has also caused extensive damage to crops, in particular rice.

Lightning strike kills 3 in Jamalpur, Bangladesh

Three people were killed by lightning in Purbakandarchar village of Chargoalini in Jamalpur on Sunday (October 3).

The deceased were known as Sundar Ali Sardar, 65, his grandson Rafiq Sardar, 14 and Mosharraf Hossain, 39.

Upazila project implementation officer Mehedi Hasan Titu said, Sundar Ali and his grandson were struck by lightning when they were working in a paddy field during rain.

Later, locals took them to upazila health complex where duty doctor declared them dead.

Meanwhile, a thunderbolt struck Mosharraf Hossain in the district, leaving him critically injured. Later, he was sent to Jamalpur General Hospital but he died on the way to the hospital.

Upazila health and family planning officer Dr. AM Abu Taher confirmed the matter.

Three construction workers died while one was seriously injured when lightning struck them at Rai Mal Majra village in the Bhadson block of the district. The injured worker is under treatment at Government Rajindra Hospital. The incident took place at 10.30 am. The deceased have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, Laal Singh and Gulzar Singh.

It has been learnt that workers were working at a brick-kiln at Rai Mal Majri village when lightning struck them. Harwinder Singh, the owner of the brick kiln, said he took the injured to the Health Centre after the incident. "It is a very shocking incident. I am trying my best to help the injured," said the owner.

Sukhdev Singh, Station House Officer, Bhadson, said the post-mortem would be conducted and bodies would be handed over to family members. Raj Kumar, state president, Democratic MGNREGA Front, said the government should provide compensation to the family members of the deceased. Besides, the government should ensure proper treatment of the injured worker.

Congress MLA from Nabha Sadhu Singh Dharmsot said, "All the deceased belonged to poor families. I will personally request the state government to provide compensation at the earliest."

Head of the state meteorological office in Sistan and Baluchestan announced on Monday morning, that a sand storm with a speed of 112 kilometers per hour hit Zabul in the north of the province, reducing visibility to 300 meters.

"Dust from the storm in the northern part of the province is expected to gradually penetrate into some eastern and central parts of the province, reducing visibility as well as air quality," Mohsen Heydari told state-run ISNA news agency. According to a report, the sandstorm has disrupted traffic on the northern roads of the province, and in particular the Zahedan-Zabul freeway.

The largest underwater eruption ever recorded has created a volcano on the seafloor that is 2,690 feet tall.

The volcano, which is twice as tall as the Empire State Building, was not present off the eastern coast of the island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean before an earthquake shook the island 2018.

The underwater seismic event generated over 11,000 detectable earthquakes in what the authors of a Nature paper documenting it describes as a "major magmatic event." The event, which caused the deformation of the seafloor was so great it was registered beyond the Indian Ocean and around the globe.

"Volcanic eruptions shape Earth's surface and provide a window into deep Earth processes," the authors said. "This is the largest active submarine eruption ever documented."

On September 9, 2021, footage was released of hundreds of sparrows falling from the sky and dying in Bali's Gianyar regency, with authorities initially dumbfounded by the whole situation.

The incident occurred in a cemetery, and was recorded by a local who could be heard being extremely puzzled at the sight of hundreds of dead (or nearly dead) avians on the ground.

Reports coming from the area indicated that the mass die-off happened immediately after a period of rainfall and heavy wind, and some social portals even guessed that it was the weather conditions that had caused the phenomenon.

Seven people have died after heavy rain caused landslides and flooding in Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia.

Severe weather including strong winds and heavy rain struck on 29 September 2021. An eight victim died as a result of wind damage.

The heavy rain caused at least 9 landslides in the area, according to disaster officials, with the most severe reported in Lubuk Alung district. Seven people died, 5 were injured and 280 families were affected.

Flooding also affected the area, with flood waters up 2 metres deep reported. A total of 338 houses were damaged, with 12 severely damaged or destroyed. Wide areas of crops and dozens of vehicles were also damaged.
