HISTORIC FREEZE RETURNS TO SE ASIA

The first week-or-so of May will see another unusually frigid mass of polar cold sweep Southeast Asia.

The cold air is forecast to descend as far south as Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

After recently breaking its low temperature record for April, Laos is expected to bust its record low for May, too.

Streets turn into rivers and homes destroyed in Nigeria

flood
Floods hit Onitsha, Anambra State in Nigeria on April 27 2022.

Heavy rainfall caused floods in the city, as drains failed to cope with the volume of water. Markets were closed as produce was washed away.

Traffic was stopped, as floods caused roads to close. A newly constructed road was damaged, causing further disruptions.

High winds caused the roofs to be blown off of homes, with over a hundred buildings damaged.

As flood waters subsided, streets were filled with debris. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage caused.

Extremely high temperatures are forecast for India Thursday, with above 90 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures shown in orange, and above 100 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures shown in dark red.
Life-threatening heat waves arrived in India a month earlier than normal, shattering temperature records, with highs reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) -- and it will only get hotter.

The worst of the heat wave is expected late this week into this weekend with high temperatures approaching 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit (5-8 degrees Celsius) above normal across northern and northwestern India as well as parts of Pakistan.

Over one billion people will be subjected to excessive heat -- 10% of the world's population, according to Scott Duncan, an extreme climate expert.

This region, including New Delhi, could endure temperatures in the mid to upper 40s Celsius -- which means temperatures over 110 and up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit are possible.

And, unfortunately, this heat wont sleep.

Long dormant underwater volcano in Antarctica triggers 85,000 earthquakes

A long-dormant underwater volcano near Antarctica has woken up, triggering a swarm of 85,000 earthquakes.

The swarm, which began in August 2020 and subsided by November of that year, is the strongest earthquake activity ever recorded in the region. And the quakes were likely caused by a "finger" of hot magma poking into the crust, new research finds.

"There have been similar intrusions in other places on Earth, but this is the first time we have observed it there," study co-author Simone Cesca, a seismologist at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, told Live Science. "Normally, these processes occur over geologic time scales," as opposed to over the course of a human life span, Cesca said. "So in a way, we are lucky to see this."

The swarm occurred around the Orca Seamount, an inactive volcano that rises 2,950 feet (900 meters) from the seafloor in the Bransfield Strait, a narrow passage between the South Shetland Islands and the northwestern tip of Antarctica. In this region, the Phoenix tectonic plate is diving beneath the continental Antarctic plate, creating a network of fault zones, stretching some portions of the crust and opening rifts in other places, according to a 2018 study in the journal Polar Science.

During this week the province of Neuquén was affected by a storm of snow and white wind that caused roadblocks and blown up roofs.

Gusts exceeded 100 kilometers per hour. The Undersecretary of Civil Defense and Citizen Protection, Martín Giusti, reported that from Zapala to the capital, the wind was the protagonist.

As a result of the storm, the Gendarmerie had to assist a dozen people stranded on roads that became impassable. They also had to rescue several people who were isolated in rural areas of "Pino Hachado" and "Copahue".
