-60 °C reported in Oymyakon, Eastern Siberia, Russia last night. Pretty cold! [This, of course is unofficial; the official figure at the same time is -55 °C - still very cold]
As mild temperatures encompass a large swath of the contiguous United States this week, parts of Siberia are experiencing temperatures colder than minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit - and it's only November.

A low temperature of minus 69 degrees [fahrenheit] was recorded early Tuesday in Delyankir, Russia. This is colder than the all-time record lows in every U.S. state except Utah (-69 degrees), Montana (-70 degrees) and Alaska (-80 degrees).

If that wasn't incredible enough, the daytime high in Delyankir Tuesday failed to rise above -60 degrees.

TERRITORIANS felt the earth shake under them today as an earthquake struck in the Banda Sea - more than 700km away.

The 5.7 magnitude quake was felt in Darwin just before 10am.

Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Phil Cummins said the quake was about 160km below the earth's surface and did not pose a tsunami threat.

"It's too small and too deep to be concerned about a tsunami. And we never know about other earthquakes. There might be aftershocks," he said.

He said there had been up to 30 reports from people in Darwin having felt the tremors.

He said it was unusual for an earthquake to be felt hundreds of kilometres away.

However, he said it was not unknown for the effects of earthquakes' to 'carry' in this region.

"It would be surprising for an earthquake to be felt that far away but we know the path between the Banda Sea and Darwin appears to be particularly efficient for the transmission of the seismic waves," he said.

He said he had not heard of any damage to towns in the area in Indonesia where it had hit.

Mauna Kea in Hawaii covered with up to 8 inches of unseasonal snow

Hawaii has experienced an unseasonal snowstorm, covering the top of Mauna Kea, one of the tallest volcanic mountains on the islands, with up to 8 inches of white flurries. Although snow on the Hawaiian mountains is not as uncommon as it sounds, the timing of the snowfall is earlier than meteorologists would expect.

A quick Google of Hawaii weather reveals that today's average temperature is a mild 75 degrees Fahrenheit, (24 degrees Celsius) but up on the Mauna Loa, the highest peak on the "Big Island" of Hawaii, it's close to freezing with with winds whipping up to 25 miles per hour, a statement from Mauna Kea weather center in Hawaii reported. As of yesterday morning, Mauna Kea was completely saturated with icy rain and snow. The rain and snow is expected to carry on until the end of the week.

The statement also advised that there is a high risk for a mixture of snow and rain and perhaps on the mountaintop at virtually anytime this week, but especially Wednesday and Thursday night.

At Dana Point on Monday, Robin Lowe was on a mission — to get a glimpse of a rare bird said to be hanging out near local waters far from its home on the Galapagos Islands.

"I'm still smiling ear to ear," she said after seeing the Nazca Booby casually hanging out with pelicans on a jetty. "To be able to see it today, it's hard to grasp the words. I'm just so thrilled to be able to see this. It's once in a lifetime. Here it was in our backyard, in the Dana Point harbor."

Bird-watching enthusiasts flocked to the Orange County harbor clutching binoculars and long lenses hoping to see the Nazca Booby.

The bird was spotted in Newport Beach two weeks ago, then by a deckhand on the fishing boat Sum Fun on Sunday, and again Monday on the rock jetty where boaters enter and exit the harbor, said Donna Kalez, manager of Dana Wharf Whale Watching.

Mysterious night flashes seen near erupting Mt. Agung in Indonesia

Today I was watching the 10-minute imagery from the Japanese Himawari geostationary weather satellite for the next eruption of Mt. Agung in Bali, Indonesia, and in the last hour or so there have been some distinct flashes in the nighttime imagery, which you can access here. These only show up in the nighttime imagery.
mt agung

Nighttime flashes in Japanese weather satellite imagery around Mt. Agung as a new eruption began on 27 November 2017. The flashes occur at 19:50, 20:10, and 20:30 UTC. The city lights have been added separately from previous observations from a different satellite, to assist in nighttime geolocation; the village lights of Besakih, on the southwest slope of Mt. Agung, can be seen within the dashed circle.

Fishermen spent hours trying to rescue over 45 dolphins that washed ashore a beach in Punnakayal
A pod of close to 45 dolphins washed ashore near Punnakayal village, located 30 km away from Thoothukudi town, on Monday. While many of the dolphins were alive, as many as four were dead, according to local sources.

Sources said that each of the dolphins that washed ashore at the Punnakayal beach on Monday evening after dusk weighed at least 100 kilos. The villagers on noticing this immediately tended to the dolphins and tried to put them back into the sea, but the dolphins adamantly returned to the shore again, sources who witnessed the incident said. Four of the dolphins had reportedly died on the shore, sources further said.

Dumb-no!

A celebrity elephant — who has starred in movies and commercials — crushed its owner to death at a zoo in Thailand on Monday, according to reports.

"The elephant suddenly turned back and used his trunk to grab the victim. Then the elephant used his trunk to crush him," Wuthichai Muangman, acting director of the Chiang Mai zoo, told AFP.

Somsak Riengngen, 54, was unchaining his star mammoth, named Ekasit, so the tusker could drink and bathe, when the 5-ton animal attacked him.

The 32-year-old pachyderm took a couple of steps forward before changing course and hitting his owner with his trunk and tusks.

Witnesses said the attack lasted more than five minutes before handlers were able to restrain the elephant, local outlet Khaosod English reported.
