Earth Changes
Breckenridge (pictured below yesterday) and Keystone (pictured top) were scheduled to open for the season this weekend, but have moved their opening dates forward to Wednesday. Eldora hadn't planned to open until next week and has moved its opening day forward by 9 days.
All have been reporting heavy snowfall through the latter half of October and in to November with snow still falling, giving 'mid-winter' powder conditions. Each has unofficially reported 30-50cm more snowfall in the past 72 hours.
The Providence Journal reports more than one million acres of forest in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island have been damaged by an infestation of the insects since 2015.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management estimates as much as a quarter of the state's hardwoods trees have been killed by the caterpillars, as well as other recent environmental factors, including droughts and other insects.
Witnesses tell FOX 46 she was simply walking down the sidewalk before it gave in and she fell into a wide hold. She was taken to the hospital quickly to be looked at.
"I was actually at the door whenever it happened."
Tara, who only told us her first name, was at work on South Center St. when she heard a woman's screams.
"I stuck my head out the door because I was scared I didn't know what was going on," Tara said.
The woman fell into the sinkhole and was unable to get out.
"It began to gush in the street last Wednesday," homeowner Daniel Levine said.
The scene at night may look and sound peaceful, but earlier Monday, it made for a potentially dangerous day at work for a City of Houston garbage crew.
Photos show their garbage truck stuck in a sinkhole created by the rushing water at the corner of Mandell and Harold near Westheimer and Dunlavy.
More than 30mm of rain fell after 9am on Melbourne Cup Day, causing train delays and soaking racegoers at Flemington.
Flooding has caused chaos along the Kingsway, at the tunnel entrance onto the CityLink, as well as in parts of Southbank, Rowville, Balwyn North, Windsor, Hawthorn, Ashburton and Narre Warren.
The Embassy said in a warning through its Twitter account: "The Jordanian embassy wishes the Jordanian community to take precautions during the rainy weather and follow the instructions issued by official authorities in Kuwait, wishing all safety."
Heavy rain continued hammering across Kuwait since yesterday, accompanied by hail and occasional lightning and thunderstorms, which caused water to heavily flood the streets of Kuwait city.
Most aurora watchers have never seen one, though, because they are usually invisible to the human eye. Last night in southern Finland, Matti Helin saw one.
"The SAR was visible to the naked eye for nearly 30 minutes and, after fading a bit, remained visible to my camera for another hour and a half," says Helin. "Normally we see auroras in the north, but this stable red arc appeared to our south. It was strange shooting in that direction :D"
SARs are related to auroras, but they are not the same. Regular auroras appear when high-energy particles rain down along polar magnetic field lines, hitting the atmosphere (100-200 km high) and causing it to glow like the picture tube of an old color TV. SARs form differently.
They are a sign of heat energy leaking into the upper atmosphere (~400 km high) from Earth's ring current system. Normally, SARs become visible to the naked eye only during strong geomagnetic storms. Last night's G1-storm was far from strong, but the arc appeared anyway--further proof that auroras can be full of surprises.
Officials said the victim was swimming near Cid Harbour on Whitsunday Island off the Queensland state coast on Monday when the animal struck at about 5.37pm local time.
The man, thought to be in his thirties, was flown to Mackay Base Hospital after sustaining "significant leg and wrist injuries", Central Queensland's helicopter rescue service said in a statement.
He later died in Mackay Base hospital of massive blood loss, according to the Courier Mail.

A resident wades through floodwater in Padangbulan district in Medan, North Sumatra, on Sept. 16.
The children were identified as Jihat Melani, 6, and Pasilah Azhan, 10, the agency has said in a release.
The flood inundated around 1,400 houses in seven districts, including Pauh, Lubuk Kilangan, Lubuk Begalung and Koto Tangah.
"The Padang administration has declared an emergency status for seven days from Nov. 3 to Nov. 9," BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.
Don't be a frozen sheeple, caught off guard by the Grand Solar Minimum. Record colds and snows across the northern hemisphere herald the arrival of an early, harsh winter. Welcome #GlobalCooling. CO2 has nothing to do with the natural cycles that threaten our way of life. Food prices are rising further soon. Signs are ubiquitous. Please share this information so that others can prepare.
