Flash floods cause major power outage in Vladivostok, Russia - 2 weeks rain in just a few hours

Flash floods have struck Far East Russia's Primorye region for the second time this month, causing major power outages in the territory's administrative center of Vladivostok on Friday.

A total of 70,000 out of the 600,000 residents of Vladivostok were left without electricity over an eight-hour period, said the Primorye region's prosecutor's office.

It was reported that two weeks' worth of precipitation fell in just a few hours of rainfall.

Footage shared by Vladivostok's Newsvl.ru news website showed extensive flooding, as well as damaged infrastructure and residential homes. Roads, parking lots and bridges were seen overflowing with water.

The island of Majorca is battling with extreme storms as hurricane-force winds of more than 75mph and torrential rain batter the popular holiday resort.

Stunned holidaymakers have shared footage of tourists running for shelter as sun loungers were sent flying across swimming pools and beaches on the Spanish island which is usually associated with blistering heat and glorious sunshine in August.

A 'small number' of people are also being treated for 'minor injuries' after a P&O cruise ship broke free from moorings and collided with a freight vessel during the storm.

The Met Office said the sea plume appeared on Saturday after a period of heavy rain.

Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes but differ slightly as they can only ever be seen over a body of water.

Large hailstones cause extensive damage in small German town as storm hits Bavaria

A storm with large hailstones damaged four-fifths of the buildings in a small town in the southern German state of Bavaria, local authorities said Sunday.

The storm swept across the southern part of Bavaria on Saturday. In Kissing, just outside Augsburg, police said 12 people were injured when a beer tent that they were trying to put up was blown over.

Also in Kissing, the wind ripped wooden slats off the roof of a home for the elderly, while hail caused visible damage to the facade of a residential building, German news agency dpa reported.

A zoo in Tennessee says it has welcomed a rare giraffe that does not have any spots. The spotless giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, on July 31 and the zoo says experts believe she is the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe on the planet.

On Sunday, the zoo announced a naming contest for the baby giraffe, which visitors can now see at the zoo.

In an email to CBS News, the zoo's director David Bright said the last recorded spotless giraffe was in 1972 in Tokyo. That giraffe, named Toshiko, was born at Ueno Zoo, according to archival photos.

A Tennessee zoo says it has welcomed a rare spotless giraffe. The zoo has opened a naming contest for the baby, which was born in late July.

Peru death toll rises to five in forest fire in Apurimac, Peru

The death toll in the forest fire raging in the southern Peruvian department of Apurimac has risen to five following the discovery of two new bodies, according to the latest official toll.

The head of the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud) network in Aymaraes province, Augusto Maldonado, told national media that the bodies found by rescue units correspond to a villager identified as Juan Romero Ayquipa, 22, and Daniel Coicca Benítez, 63.

Maldonado added that five of the six injured who were hospitalized in the Chalhuanca emergency hospital have already been discharged. One remains hospitalized with minor burns, but with a favorable prognosis.

Marine biologists and New York City parks officials are working to secure a dead humpback whale that washed ashore near Rockaway Inlet, west of Atlantic Beach.

The 30-foot whale was reported Friday afternoon and parks officials were working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to secure the remains and prepare it for a necropsy, said Robert DiGiovanni, chief scientist for the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society.

Crews were guarding the whale's carcass on shore and protecting the area from beachgoers approaching it in the surf, DiGiovanni said.

Surfer attacked in Australia by suspected great white shark hospitalized, clinging to life

A surfer is in the hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries in a suspected great white shark attack off Australia's east coast Friday, police said.

The attack took place just before 10:15 a.m. local time on the Mid North Coast, the New South Wales Police Force reported in a statement Friday.

Emergency crews responded to Lighthouse Beach, at Port Macquarie, after receiving reports about the attack. Officers found a 44-year-old man who suffered major injuries to at least one of his legs and had been helped to shore by witnesses.

Police said witnesses applied a tourniquet to the man's leg before first-responders arrived.
