World is on brink of a new ice age

Crippling blizzards, snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures threaten a yearly dose of Arctic misery for the next fifty years at least - and possibly decades more. Climate experts warn a rare pattern of water cooling in the north Atlantic will trigger a chain reaction of events leading to a "fully-blown ice age".

The [forecasters] say the UK is on alert for a "serious climate situation" with regular winter whiteouts pushing emergency services to the limit. Britain faces an 'all but unprecedented' situation thanks to a cocktail of climatic changes all happening at once to affect the weather.

The northern Atlantic has been cooling steadily over the past few months leading to a colossal area of icy water to form off the UK coast. This is thought to be the result of changes in wind flow and salinity and could lead to lower than average temperatures in Britain all year round. The phenomenon has already raised fears this winter will be un usually brutal with months of sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow on the way.

Long-term accumulative effects could be that parts of northern Europe, including Britain, will cool dramatically. The seemingly small drop in Atlantic temperatures also threatens to nudge the Gulf Stream, which brings warm currents to the UK coasts, off course. The usual flow of air over Europe from the Arctic towards Bermuda and the tropical Azores Islands is also likely to be thrown out of kilter.

Another driver will be a dramatic reduction in solar energy output which has been observed over the past few months.Long-range forecasters say this will add to the mix with the UK at risk of a "fully-blown ice age" before the end of the century.

Comment: Not only Britain, but Europe and North America too - the weather is becoming more and more extreme all over the globe.

Mexico's Colima volcano erupts twice, spewing ash and smoke

Image
Mexicos Colima volcano erupted twice - at 9.46am and 11am - on 15 October, spewing ash and smoke into the air, authorities reported. The plume of gas reached a height of 2,000m in the southern direction, with moderate ash content, the head of Mexico's emergency services, Luis Felipe Puente, said on Twitter.

Located in the south-western Mexican state of Colima, the Fire Volcano has been exhibiting activity since 9 July. Over the past months, nearby villages have been blanketed with thick coats of ash, prompting evacuations.

Officially known as the Colima Volcano, it was previously active in January and February of 2015 and is part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire. Mexico contains more than 3,000 volcanos but only 14 are considered active.

Major eruptions have included the 1953 eruption of the Paricutin Volcano in Michoacan, the 1982 eruption of Tacana Volcano in Chiapas and the 1986 eruption of the Colima Volcano.

The Colima Volcano has erupted more than 40 times since the 16th century and local authorities have an emergency plan that includes continuous observation of the volcano and mandatory evacuations, if needed.

Brown bear breaks into Russian shopping mall, shot dead at local kindergarten

Police in the Russian city of Khabarovsk near the Chinese border were forced to shoot a bear when it made its way into a kindergarten after being chased away from a shopping mall.

Locals first spotted the bear on a parking lot near a sporting arena called Erofey late in the evening. By the time the police had arrived the bear had already moved to a shopping mall nearby.

The police managed to shoo the scared animal out of the shops, but the bear made a run straight to a local kindergarten and was shot at the scene.

The head of the state hunting monitoring agency, Andrey Mamayev, estimated that the bear was young, about one year old, and had probably just started living without his mother.

"We can conclude that the inexperienced bear decided to swim across the Amur River in search of a den," Mamaev added.

This could be the case as brown bears hibernate through winter, so the young male could have been looking for a suitable spot. Or he might have been hungry.

Because brown bears have an enormous food palate - they will try anything and eat anything if it's accessible - they are often attracted to human-created food sources. They usually opt for meals that are easily obtained though. Not worth a marathon swim like what the bear in question had to supposedly go through. The Amur's width near where the bear was first spotted is 1.16 km.

Brown bears are known to attack humans, they are large animals that can weigh up to 680kg and commonly live to 25 years in the wild.
