Mountain passes turn icy; Wolf Creek Pass closes for five hours

Winter may be a couple of months away, but Southwest Colorado got its first taste of cold and snow Tuesday, with reports of over a foot of snow in the high country.

Scott Stearns, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said an official inch count of how much snow fell in the mountains north of Durango will not be available until Wednesday.

"We usually get a lot of reports the morning after the snow occurs," Stearns said.

Snow reportedly started falling just after midnight Tuesday, with the Colorado Department of Transportation reporting 6 inches of snow on mountain passes as early as 5:30 a.m.

"Our plow drivers were out plowing the surface of the roadways, and they've been after it throughout the day," said CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes.

Grand Canyon National Park has experienced the first snowstorm of the season Oct. 12.

The park reported that around 3:30 p.m., the fog and clouds parted to reveal the canyon.

Freezing temperatures tonight and Wednesday morning, with a gradual warming trend this weekend are expected in the Grand Canyon area.

South Rim Village roads have been plowed and are mostly clear, however wet road surfaces will turn into black ice in a few hours. The public is asked to watch their speed.

Foot traction and trekking poles are recommended on footpaths and trails.

At least 13 people have lost their lives and 9 are missing after Topical Storm Kompasu passed over northern Philippines bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

As of 13 October 2021, the Philippines National Disaster Risk and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 6,111 families (21,511 people) affected, 11,525 people displaced, 13 dead, 9 missing and 3 injured. Heavy rain caused flooding in 107 locations and 14 landslides across Regions 1, 2, 3, MIMAROPA, CARAGA, and CAR.

Half of Kashmir covered by early snowfall, snow up to one foot deep

The snowfall season has started a month ahead of time in Jammu and Kashmir. Snow fell on Monday from Amarnath cave, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Zojila pass to Pir Panjal range. The maximum snowfall up to one foot occurred in the area along the Bandipora-Gurej road. Here even the roads came to a standstill. According to the Meteorological Department, till a week ago, Sonamarg and Gulmarg were in bad condition due to heat.

But due to this snowfall, the temperature has dropped to 1.5 degree Celsius. It has also provided relief from the heat. The Meteorological Department said that along with snowfall in the hilly areas of the valley, hail also fell in the plains along with rain. Katra recorded the highest rainfall of 23 mm. Meteorologists said that the monsoon has not yet departed from the country. In such a situation, this snowfall is going to give relief. It is known that the period of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir starts after November 15.

An abnormally large hail and hurricane hit Libya on October 9, 2021, namely the city of Misrata, which is the third largest city in Libya. The thunderstorm was accompanied by heavy torrential rain, hail and squally winds.

The Manuherikia and Maniototo regions of Central Otago felt the full sting of a spring storm yesterday which brought heavy rain, snow and severe gales to the southern region.

Residents awoke to blanket of snow and motorists were warned to take care on State Highway 85 between Omakau and Kyeburn and in Moa Flat Rd, and Danseys Pass Rd was closed because of snow.

The depth of snowfall differed with about 10cm reported in Naseby and almost three times that in St Bathans.

There was also widespread snow on the hills throughout Central Otago and above Queenstown and Wanaka.

Woman found dead believed from crocodile attack in Malaysia

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre, in a statement, said it received an emergency call about a victim being attacked by a crocodile in Kalabakan

A woman was found dead in Kampung Serudung Laut, near here, today, believed due to a crocodile attack.

The body of Fosanih Nansel, 22, was found at 8am by the villagers who were searching for her, after the woman was reported missing in a nearby river since yesterday.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre, in a statement, said it received an emergency call via MERS 999 at 8.19pm about the victim being attacked by a crocodile.

"From the information provided by the family, a search and rescue operation was carried out today. The victim was found by residents about 300 metres from the location where she reportedly was attacked by the reptile," the statement said.

According to the statement, the victim's body was handed over to the police for further action and the operation ended at 10.27am.

Lightning strikes killed 2,800 in the last 11 years in Bangladesh

Lightning strikes — electric discharges between the atmosphere and the ground — have killed no fewer than 2,800 people in the last 11 years in Bangladesh, according to government data.

The government is planning to launch a project at a cost of Tk476 crore to save people from the deadly natural phenomenon and reduce the toll, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman told a press conference at the secretariat on Tuesday.

Under the project, the government will buy devices that will give a warning 40 minutes before a lightning strikes, he said.

In addition, shelters will be set up to avoid fatalities during lightning strikes.

Rahman said Bangladesh suffers from 16 categories of disasters at present. Lightning strike was added to the list in 2015.
