Several hundred seal carcasses have been found in Cape Breton and Sambro, N.S.
Hundreds of dead seals have washed up on shores in Cape Breton and near Halifax in recent days, prompting an investigation by the Marine Animal Response Society.

Andrew Reid, the society's response co-ordinator, said it has received a number of reports over the last week about juvenile seal carcasses washing ashore in Cape Breton and Sambro, N.S., just outside Halifax.

Reid said there are believed to be several hundred dead seals in total, including roughly 70 in the Sambro area.

Eleven washed up on Geoffrey Howard's family property in West Pennant, just outside of Sambro. He said he went out to look after hearing his neighbour counted 27 along the shoreline on his property.

Sprites recorded from Seville, Spain

This video shows two sprites recorded by several cameras from Seville (Spain) during a storm that took place on 2020 April 14. Sprites are electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, typically at heights ranging between 50-90 km. The images were recorded by means of high-sensitivity cameras operating in the framework of the SMART project (Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia, IAA-CSIC).

Comment: With the surge in sightings of red sprites in recent years (which are still considered 'rare' by some) it seems more clues as to the electrical nature of our weather is becoming more apparent: For more, check out SOTT radio's: Behind the Headlines: Earth changes in an electric universe: Is climate change really man-made?

Red sprites captured over Southeastern US

Red sprites on April 12, 2020 @ Edmond, Oklahoma
On Easter weekend, a series of severe storms swept across the Southeastern USA, battering the region with powerful thunderstorms and deadly tornadoes. In Edmond, Oklahoma, Paul M. Smith went outside on Easter morning to photograph the distant lightning. He caught these sprites leaping up from a thunderhead in Arkansas.

"The electrical storm had already passed through our area. These sprites were about 200 miles away, across the state line," he says. "After being stuck in the house for weeks, it was nice to be out and smelling the canola blooms."

Sprites are an exotic form of upward directed lightning. They often appear above the strongest thunderstorms, reaching their red tendrils up toward the edge of space. Last weekend's Easter storms likely produced a great number of sprites. Smith was perfectly positioned to photograph them--"I was just far enough away to see over the cloudtops," he explains.

Cyclical megadrought? Historic severe drought in central Chile enters its tenth year

Chile drought

Graphics: Both images were acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 / NASA

Severe drought is a rather a common occurrence in Chile, but the current one is setting a record-breaking longevity, entering its tenth year.
The river flows and reservoirs running dry due to drought worsening, being at their historically low levels. Years of resource exploitation and lax legislation have resulted in most reservoirs in the central parts of the country running dry. Now, there are more than 400,000 families and nearly 1.5 million people approximately, whose water supply depends on tanker truck deliveries. Animals are dying due to lack of available water.

According to the paleoclimatologists who look for clues of past climate conditions in tree rings, the estimation is that no drought in Chile's modern meteorological record (since 1915) has lasted longer. They are estimating that the last 'megadrought' of this scale probably occurred in this region more than 1000 years ago, explained René D. Garreaud, a scientist at the University of Chile.

Comment: It's also worth noting that there is good evidence the Americas are subject to cyclical megadroughts during times of planetary cooling, as happens to be the case today: A warning from ancient tree rings: The Americas are prone to catastrophic, simultaneous droughts

Rainfall amounts lately have been very poor, actually on the extremely low values! Over the last 10 years (since 2010), precipitation in central Chile has been below normal each year by an average of 20-45 %. Around Santiago, the Chile's capital, the lack of rain has been particularly extreme. Only 10-20 % of normal rainfall has been recorded between 2014 and 2019. And in 2019, the greater Santiago area and in Valparaiso, rainfall was almost 80 % below the previous record low. In the northern region of Coquimbo, it was even down by 90 %. While drought is now entering its tenth year, the situation is worsening and is critical.

Comment: Elsewhere in South America there are ongoing droughts in Brazil and Argentina threatening crucial crop harvests.
