Torrential rain in northern Slovenia triggers landslides

NNNNNNN
Since Friday night, more than 230 weather-related incidents have been reported, mostly in northern regions.

After a prolonged spell of hot and dry weather, parts of Slovenia have been battered by storms and torrential rain.

In Kokra, a village in the north, people from three houses were evacuated after heavy rains caused a landslide on Saturday.

A bridge was also swept away in Kokra after the river there burst its banks and some local roads have become impassable.

Sakurajima volcano in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture has erupted, Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, VAAC, Tokyo reported on July 20. The VAAC warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to an estimated 4900 m altitude or flight level 160 and is moving at 20 kts in E direction. No damage or casualties have been reported so far.

The volcano is located in the southern island of Kyushu. Sakurajima is an active volcano, formerly an island and now a peninsula, in Kagoshima Prefecture. Being one of the most active volcanoes in the country, Sakurajima last erupted in February this year.

Sakurajima, which means Cherry Blossom Island, is located about 1,000 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, and near the city of Kagoshima in the southern prefecture. Sakurajima used to be an island but became a peninsula following an eruption in 1914. In 2019, Sakurajima spewed ash 5.5 km high.

Further, the seismological institute in El Salvador recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.9 while that of Nicaragua registered it at 5.2-magnitude.

"A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Guatemala on July 20," the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with the tremor also felt in El Salvador and Nicaragua. No casualties or damage were reported in the three countries.

"The tremor hit at 8.53 p.m. (02.53 GMT) with its epicentre 8 km (five miles) southeast of Jalapa city, at a depth of 265.5 km," according to the USGS.

The seismological institute in El Salvador recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.9 while that of Nicaragua registered it at 5.2-magnitude.

Civil protection authorities of the three Central American countries reported no casualties or damage to infrastructure.

Central America is on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast area of intense tectonic activity that runs along the west coast of the Americas and across the Pacific basin.

Earth's water is substantially and rapidly losing oxygen, new study reveals

Gulf Stream

Supplies of dissolved oxygen in bodies of water across the globe are dwindling rapidly, and scientists say it's one of the greatest risks to Earth's life support system.

Just as atmospheric oxygen is vital for animals like ourselves, dissolved oxygen (DO) in water is essential for healthy aquatic ecosystems, whether freshwater or marine. With billions of people relying on marine and freshwater habitats for food and income, it's concerning these ecosystems' oxygen has been substantially and rapidly declining.

A team of scientists is proposing that aquatic deoxygenation be added to the list of 'planetary boundaries', which in its latest form describes nine domains that impose thresholds "within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come."

So far, the planetary boundaries are climate change, ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone depletion, interference with the global phosphorus and nitrogen cycles, rate of biodiversity loss, global freshwater use, land-system change, aerosol loading, and chemical pollution.

Comment: What's particularly notable is that Earth's history shows that deoxygenation events, also known as anoxia, have occurred numerous times in the past, and it often seems to coincide with a variety of other phenomena, including climate change - more specifically global cooling - and mass extinction events (none of which occurred as the result of CO2): See also: Volcanoes, Earthquakes And The 3,600 Year Comet Cycle

Homes and streets were flooded, commuters stranded, and vehicles damaged all by early afternoon yesterday, as heavy rains from Wednesday night into yesterday morning wreaked havoc and exacerbated already flooded conditions in some parts of the country.

While yesterday morning's showers gave way by afternoon to sunnier skies, and drier conditions are expected into the weekend, forecasters have maintained cautions to the public that additional rainfall could impact saturated soils and cause further flooding, as well as landslides.

Heavy street flooding was widespread yesterday while some communities in South Trinidad, where homes were already under water, found floods rising by morning.

A number of areas in Central, North and East Trinidad were impacted by early yesterday morning into midday by severe street floods, as well some residential flooding.

In Port of Spain, street floods distressed motorists and commuters, with several reports of vehicles shutting down while navigating flood waters, including on the Eastern Main Road in the vicinity of Abattoir Road.
