At least 25 pilot whales have died and more than 200 are stranded at Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's west coast in what is believed to be one of Australia's worst beaching events.

A government marine conservation team was assessing the health of the whales late on Monday after they became stranded in three spots in and outside Macquarie Heads, near the town of Strahan.

Nic Deka, incident controller from the Tasmanian department of primary industry, parks, water and environment, told reporters it appeared from the air that about 25 of 30 whales stranded near Ocean Beach, outside the heads, have died.


Comment: The BBC reports on Sept.22:
At least a third of 270 whales stranded off Tasmania have died and more are feared to be dying, rescuers in Australia say.

However, crews were able to save 25 of the animals on Tuesday and are aiming to escort more back into the sea.

The pilot whales were discovered in shallow waters off the west coast of the island on Monday.

It's unknown what drew the whales to the shore. Marine biologists say the rescue mission will likely take days.

Whale beachings are common in the region, but one of this size has not been seen in over a decade.

Tasmania last recorded a mass stranding in 2009 involving around 200 whales.

Further flooding has struck in parts of Cambodia after heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Noul. Disaster authorities report 11 people have died.

Previously flooding had affected Preah Sihanouk province, where 2,000 people were affected and 1 fatality was reported.

On 21 September, Cambodia's National Committee for Disaster Management reported that the impact of the typhoon Noul over the past few days has caused devastating flooding across the provinces of Pursat, Oddar Meanchey, Koh Kong and Pailin, as well as Preah Sihanouk.

According to a post from the page 'Typical Balakovo', on the Russian social networking site VK, residents of the city, in the Saratov Region, around 1,000km south of Moscow, witnessed a road strewn with dozens of dead birds.

The residents of Siglufjörður, North Iceland, woke up to a surprise this morning. All of a sudden, the surrounding mountains and the whole town were covered in snow, mbl.is reports.

You may remember that part of the popular TV series Trapped, directed by Baltasar Kormákur, was filmed in Siglufjörður on days when the town was under a thick blanket of snow.

The forecast is for continued snow showers in Siglufjörður and the neighboring town of Ólafsfjörður.

An emaciated grizzly was found dead Thursday on the B.C. Central Coast yesterday, sparking concern over the rest of the bear population and its food supply.

The bear was found at Smith Inlet, about 60 kilometres north of Port Hardy in the traditional territory of the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw First Nation, by a Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw team on a river patrol near Nekite River estuary.

"The poor bear starved to death," said John Smith, a fisheries supervisor with the band and the one who found the dead grizzly. Smith said there are very few fish in the river right now, adding he saw five other bears who seemed "thinner than normal" but not as bad as the dead one.

'I've never seen anything like this before," said Patricia Sewid, a Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw fisheries officer.

While Sewid returned to Port Hardy last week she said that she had counted the lowest salmon numbers of her career.

Teams from India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been called on to rescue flood victims in the state of Karnataka.

Flooding struck after heavy rainfall from 19 September, affecting the city of Udupi and the surrounding areas.

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) figures show that Udupi recorded just under 450 mm of rain in 24 hours to 20 September 2020. Local media said several rivers broke their banks damaging at least 4 bridges.

At least 5 people have died in recent flooding in Ghana's Upper East Region.

According to a report from the country's National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), quoted by local media, flooding during September affected 7,561 people and damaged 1,596 homes in several districts of the region.

A further 156 homes have been destroyed along with wide areas of crops.

Fatalities were reported in the districts of Bolgatanga Municipal (3), Pusiga and Binduri. Around 7 people were also injured.

At least 7 people have died after Tropical Storm Noul made its way across the countries of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand in South East Asia.

Noul made landfall near the city of Da Nang in Vietnam on 18 September 2020. Disaster authorities in Vietnam reported storm-related fatalities in the provinces of Thua Thien Hue (04), Ha Tinh and Quang Tri. A further 112 people were injured.

Ten houses were completely destroyed in Thua Thien Hue and 3 in Quang Tri. Thousands of other houses suffered damage, mostly as a result of strong winds. Around 50,000 people were evacuated from affected areas.

The storm then headed inland, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to parts of Laos, where flooding was reported in Xekong and Champassak provinces.

The first snow fell in the Sverdlovsk region, reports RIA News.

Japan's iconic Mount Fuji got its first dusting of snow of the season, the central Japan city of Fujiyoshida in Yamanashi Prefecture announced on Sept. 21.

According to the city, cooler temperatures prevailing over the four-day long weekend that started on Sept. 19 turned rain that had been falling on the mountain into snow, leaving a light sprinkling of the white stuff near the peak.

Mount Fuji's first observed snowfall in 2019 came on Oct. 23, over a month later than this year. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, on average the mountain gets its first snow on Sept. 30.
