A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Nicaraguaon Thursday near a fishing village popular as a vacation spot, with no initial reports of damage.

The quake's epicenter was at sea, 58 km (36 miles) from the village of Masachapa, which lies about an hour's drive southwest of the capital Managua, where strong shaking was also reported, the United States Geological Survey said.

This week in volcano news - Volcanic activity near Sitka, Iceland earthquake swarm

VOLCANO

In the last week, several major volcano related news stories broke. In Alaska, the Mount Edgecumbe volcano near the town of Sitka produced an unexpected swarm of several hundred earthquakes, suggesting that magma is on the move at depth.

Meanwhile in Australia, strong thermal signatures were detected on Heard Island, indicating that a new eruption may have begun. And, in Iceland, a series of earthquake swarms occurred near the Blue Lagoon hot springs, which may have been volcanic in origin. This video will discuss these volcano related news stories, as told and analyzed by a volcanologist.

Drought, snow, freeze further damaging U.S. wheat

damage
An ag economist says his concerns of tight wheat ending stocks are getting worse with more adverse weather in parts of the Western Plains and Western Cornbelt.

The University of Missouri's Ben Brown said freezing temperatures early this morning in states like Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska give farmers a reason to worry.

"Well, we don't want freeze warnings when the wheat is coming out dormancy...," he said. "This morning would've been something that would've caused some panic."

Brown said the freeze might have knocked out some early planted soybeans too.

Well, that was a whopper of a storm, let alone one in late April.

The most snow -- 18 inches -- fell in the southern Cortland County town of Virgil. In second place, with 16.3 inches, was another Central New York spot: the village of Erieville, in Madison County.

Hilltops and mountains collected the most snow because they stayed colder longer than the valleys, so more of the storm's moisture fell as snow and less as rain. Virgil sits at 1,424 feet above sea level; Erieville is 1,499 feet.

Two records were set in Binghamton: The highest snowfall total on April 19, with 11 inches. The old record was 6.9 inches. The total snowfall, which started Monday night, also broke the two-day snowfall record for April.

Met Office changed global temperature record to add 14% to recent warming, says climate scientist

adjustocene
Satellite data show that global warming started to run out of steam two decades ago, but the U.K. Met Office's record of surface temperature from 1975 was boosted by 14% at the end of 2020. At the same time, the period between 1880-1975 was cooled. The move accentuates the rise in the global temperature recorded in the 1980s and 1990s that forms the basis of much of the current hysteria about the so-called climate emergency.

The disclosure of the apparent warming and cooling is contained in the latest State of the Climate report from Emeritus Professor Ole Humlum of the University of Oslo, and published by the Global Warming Policy Foundation. Professor Humlum says the post-1975 warming is about +0.1°C and the pre-1975 cooling about -0.1°C. The version-change to the fifth HadCRUT Met Office database "conveys the impression of a somewhat more rapid global temperature increase following the relatively cold period terminating around 1975". When the Met Office first announced the change in December 2020, it admitted to 0.16°C extra warming, although it didn't give specifics about cooling and warming either side of the 1975 mark.

Professor Humlum also draws attention to significant retrospective changes in the American GISS surface temperature record. The graph below shows the effect of the changes made since May 2008 on the monthly temperature record, with increases in red and decreases in blue. As with HadCRUT, the changes warm the early part of the record, cool the period from 1900 to 1970, and heat up the later recordings.
