The Chair of the Canadian Honey Council says it was a great summer for bees last year, but it was also great for growing Varroa mites.
Jake Berg says Varroa mites are a major biosecurity threat that has led to a major decline in the bee population over the winter.
"Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario are all talking about kind of 45 per cent losses as an average. Quebec is probably the hardest hit with about 60 per cent loss on average, and Saskatchewan is sitting at about 30 per cent, I believe at the moment. Typically, we expect 20 to 25 per cent as a high number."
He notes for some producers that were hit hard it's going to take multiple years to rebuild their colonies.

Local captures terrifying footage of deadly landslide in southwest China
The landslide reportedly occurred in the afternoon of Sunday, May, 8, in Bijie, Guizhou, China.
Videos of the landslide in China's Guizhou were posted on Twitter with one user posting:

The unfortunate event occurred in #Bijie prefecture #Guizhou province where sadly 2 people lost their lives. #landslideVia @havamedyaa," alongside a video showing footage of the moment the landslide in China's Guizhou occurred.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 jolted 78 km NNW of San Antonio de los Cobres, Argentina at 23:06:29 GMT on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The epicenter, with a depth of 193.81 km, was initially determined to be at 23.6141 degrees south latitude and 66.7236 degrees west longitude.

Rod Murphy, of Sebring, was aware of the rain forecast and had decided to turn off the sprinklers so his plants would not be overwatered.
But the timing of the chore proved fateful as he witnessed how the stunning flash as the lightning struck his neighbor's backyard, with flaming earth erupting from the ground.
A shocked Rod placed his right hand on his chest and let out a scared cry fleeing inside his home, perhaps not quite processing what had just happened.
A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday in the Bismarck Sea about 200 kilometres (120 miles) off Papua New Guinea's coast, the US Geological Survey said.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan on Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, with buildings in capital Taipei sent swaying.
The offshore quake hit just before 2:30 p.m. at a depth of 27 kilometers (17 miles), about 70 km southwest of Okinawa's Yonakuni Island, not far from Taiwan, according to the USGS report.
Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said the shake, the fifth this year above a magnitude of 6.0, was felt across the island, though there were no immediate reports of damage.
