'Slow-moving disaster': Mud geyser threatens California infrastructure

California is currently fighting a losing battle to contain a rather turgid and slow moving foe. The state is attempting to stop a creeping mud geyser threatening local infrastructure near the town of Niland, Imperial County.

The movement of the mass of gloopy soil could be likened to a creature from a horror B-movie, thanks to it seeping and sliding towards human civilisation.

Mud pots are a natural occurrence that usually take place when a hot acidic spring dissolves rock and soil. Often the pools of muck and water can be seen bubbling due to the geothermal heat.

In Central Kashmir, Budgam fruit growers have been complaining of losses to both produce as well as to the apple plants.

The early snowfall in Kashmir has wreaked havoc on orchards in Valley as around 20 to 30 percent of the apple harvest is yet to be plucked from plants or is lying in the orchards waiting for packaging.

"20 to 30 percent of the apple production is still lying on plants. Fruit growers were waiting to supply it in this week due to upcoming Diwali festival. However, heavy snowfall has put in peril estimated Rs 1000 crore worth fruits across Kashmir. As post snow, we don't how much would be the extent of damage," said Chairman Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Association, Bashir Ahmad Basheer.

Comment: Update: News18 on the 5th of November carries this additional information by The Press Trust of India news agency:
Record-breaking snowfall has thrown life out of gear in Doda and adjoining districts in Chenab Valley with farmers and orchardists fearing huge financial losses.

The local meteorological department has figures for only 20 years after its establishment and such a heavy snowfall in the first week of November had happened for the first time in the past two decades, meteorologist Ramesh Sharma said.

Locals claim such a heavy snowfall has happened in the areas after more than four decades, catching them unprepared for the ensuing winter.

The snowfall in the inhabited areas, ranging from three inches to over three feet, was recorded in different areas of the district, forcing closure of Bhadarwah-Basohli highway, Kishtwar-Sinthan Top road and Bhadarwah-Chamba interstate road while many far-flung areas got cut-off, officials said.
