Huge outbreak of noctilucent clouds occur in Europe, US

Last night, a huge outbreak of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) occurred as tendrils of frosted meteor smoke were sighted in Europe and the USA as far south as Oregon and Utah. "What a surprise," says Andrew Robb of Beaverton OR. "It's been almost 10 years since I've seen NLCs here in Oregon. They're back!"

Robb took the picture, above, just after sunset on June 8th. "NLCs stretched the length of the whole horizon," he says. "Their rippling waves and other structures were fascinating."

NLCs are Earth's highest clouds. Seeded by meteoroids, they float at the edge of space more than 80 km above the planet's surface. The clouds are very cold and filled with tiny ice crystals. When sunbeams hit those crystals, they glow electric-blue.

Normally, NLCs are confined to polar regions, but this year people are seeing them at middle latitudes, too. Last night alone the clouds appeared in Utah, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, Montana, Iowa, Oregon and Maine. Electric-blue ripples also blanketed much of northern to central Europe. 'Punched in the Face': U.S. Floods snarl trucks, trains and barges

Hundreds of barges are stalled on the Mississippi River, clogging the main circulatory system for a farm-belt economy battered by a relentless, record-setting string of snow, rainstorms and flooding.

Railways and highways have been closed as well, keeping needed supplies from farmers and others, and limiting the crops sent to market. For Chris Boerm, who manages transportation for Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., one of the nation's largest agricultural commodities dealers, the weather is an unyielding, ever-changing challenge.

He and his co-workers spend time carefully planning out the quickest way to get supplies to the people that need them, he said. But it's tough staying ahead of the drenching rain.

India faces drought crisis across nation

Narendra Modi had begun his first regime in 2014 on a drought note.

It was followed by another drought in 2015. This was said to be the first instance in a hundred years when India faced back-to-back drought years.

Narendra Modi won a bigger mandate in 2019 and India is staring at another spell of drought if the current trend of rainfall shortage continues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) data fuels this fear.

In the pre-monsoon season or between March 1 and May 31, the rainfall deficiency was 25 per cent. It has been increasing since then.
