Farmer and four of his camels killed by lightning in Oman

LIGHTNING
An Omani farmer and four of his camels were struck and killed by lightning in central Oman on Tuesday morning during unseasonably stormy weather.

Hamed Al Adhubi, 58, was working on his family's farm in the village of Maadh when he was hit by intermittent lightning. The dead camels were found about 50 metres from his body, witnesses said.

"It was raining heavily for most of the night. It stopped in the morning but there was lightning every now and then," Amjad Mushtaq, a farm labourer who found Al Adhubi's body, told The National. "Part of the farm's fence was burnt and a few of the fruit trees were also felled by lightning."

Stormy weather is uncommon at this time of year in Oman, where heavy rain usually occurs between the months of November and March.

A huge sinkhole was spotted in the middle of a river in Badian town, prompting officials to cordon the area to prevent accidents while authorities are still trying to figure out how to go about the matter.
Residents of a quiet village in Southern Cebu were surprised to see that a huge hole had formed in the middle of a river.

The sinkhole was discovered on Saturday morning in Barangay Banhigan, Badian town, 106 kilometers south of Cebu City. According to PO1 Rodjie Alicaway of the Badian Police Station, a concerned citizen alerted police about the presence of the sinkhole, which was two meters wide.

At 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, investigators immediately proceeded to the area and saw that right in the middle of the river was a huge cavity with a depth they had yet to determine. "We tried to insert a 20-meter-long bamboo into the sinkhole and yet it failed to touch the bottom of the hole. It must be very deep," said Alicaway in a phone interview with Cebu Daily News.

Police then reported the matter to Badian Mayor Carmencita Lumain for proper action. The police have cordoned the area to prevent people and their animals from passing through that part of the river to avoid accidents. "We're afraid that there might be those who will fall into the hole," Alicaway said.

A dead oarfish was found along the shores of Magallanes Street, Surigao City Tuesday morning.

Agriculturist Mayette Abkilan said the oarfish measures 8-feet long and 1-foot wide.

Abkilan said a fisherman already reported seeing an oarfish that was still alive in the sea. She said residents have already buried the oarfish.

To some, deep-sea creatures such as oarfish that end up in shallow water are a good predictor of earthquakes.

According to Japanese folklore, oarfish are nature's version of prophets of doom.

2 critically injured by pit bull in Detroit

Dog attack
Police say two people were critically injured in a dog attack in suburban Detroit.

Roseville police responded Sunday night to a report of a dog mauling and found a 52-year-old woman outside a home covered in blood. She said she was attacked by her son's pit bull and they found the woman's 51-year-old husband unconscious inside the home.

Police say the dog suspected in the attack was "extremely aggressive" and wouldn't allow emergency crews to get past,
so they distracted the animal. Rescuers tried to remove the man from the home and the dog returned, so they used a stun gun on the animal.

The man and woman are hospitalized.

Police say the dog and another dog were captured by Macomb County animal control officers. Prosecutors will review the case.
