Snow-packed Walsenburg
With Thursday's snowstorm, some places got hit a little harder than others.

Driving through town, streets remain snow-packed in Walsenburg. The visual of it all truly incredible. Cars, trees and Halloween decorations were buried under 12 inches of snow. However, although the snow may look beautiful the driving conditions remain extremely poor.

Tom Moran said, "Well when you are from Austin, Texas, it doesn't look too good."

And Rita Bastian who was trying to get to work was not able to because of the weather, "I work in Alamosa and I was trying to get there last night and I made it to Colorado City and then I went back home to Pueblo and so now I'm trying to make it again and the sheriff stopped me and said not to go over the pass just yet."

Storms and heavy rain lashed through southern France on Wednesday, causing flooding strong enough to sweep away cars in some towns in the region.

In the city of Argeles-sur-Mer in the Pyrenees-Orientales department, one vehicle ended up wedged on top of a traffic bollard.

Across the region, streets and roads have been severely damaged and covered with mud, forcing residents to clean up. Blocks of cement have been moved by flood water.

A total of 60 cows lost their lives when struck by lightning at the Fertimar farm, located in the Nicaraguan municipality of Chontales, local media reported.

The animals belonged to a farmer of Guatemalan origin and were struck while seeking to hide from a thunderstorm under a leafy tree.

It should be noted that this is the second time this year that the discharge of lightning kills a herd of cows in Nicaragua.

Thus, on June 9, a powerful ray killed 21 cattle on a farm on the island of Ometepe, in the department of Rivas.

Sudden stratospheric warming is the unusual climate variation affecting ozone, heat and wind

The smallest ozone hole in decades is one impact of this year's unusual warming event
© NASAThe smallest ozone hole in decades is one impact of this year's unusual warming event.
We just had the smallest ozone hole since 1982, the drought is dragging on and the fire danger is forecast to be up. What connects all these events? Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW).

South Australia was sizzling on Thursday, but relief is coming as a cold front makes its way across the country.

Victoria is expected to have a hot night before the front arrives, then it will be New South Wales's turn in the hot seat on Friday.

Pinning one event on a single climate driver is fraught, but this bout of warm weather fits with what would be expected as one of the strongest SSWs in 40 years starts impacting Earth's surface.

The official outlook is for warm dry conditions in the months ahead.

ADVERSE WEATHER conditions which have battered Ireland for months has resulted in "serious" problems with the annual potato harvest and could lead to a national shortage, experts have warned.

According to RTÉ, the constant wet weather has resulted in just 30% of the national crop being harvested so far, with fears of big losses if Ireland is not hit with a prolonged dry spell, as wet soil can cause potatoes to rot in the ground.

If the situation is not rectified quickly, farmers could lose profits and there could be a severe shortage of Irish potatoes available to buy across the country.

Rainfall in the northeast of the country, where half the national crop is grown, experienced rainfall double that of the monthly average in August and September, and this has resulted in only a small percentage of the crops being harvested.

Rarely-seen atmospheric gravity wave phenomenon captured by satellite over Australia

Satellite images have captured a usually invisible phenomenon known as atmospheric gravity waves pulsing through clouds off Western Australia's north-west.

Thunderstorms in the Pilbara and Kimberley on Monday and Tuesday triggered the waves, which spread out over the Indian Ocean and combined with a plume of dust to create a spectacular and rarely-seen display.

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior meteorologist Adam Morgan said atmospheric gravity waves were basically ripples in the sky.

"When you think of waves in the ocean, they're a type of gravity wave," he said.

FLOOD

Heavy rains that pummeled the capital of Cairo and other parts of the country, causing massive traffic jams and flooding many key roads, left at least eight people dead, including four children, authorities said Wednesday.

People captured images of Tuesday's downpours and flooding on their mobile phones, posting images on social media, including scenes of cars submerged by flood waters.

In one dramatic video, a man on a bulldozer pulls the lifeless body of a little girl out of the water in a flooded area in northern Sharqia Province as shouts and screams are heard in the background. Another video shows a policeman, steps away from the presidential palace in Cairo's district of Heliopolis, wading into a flooded street to unclog a sewage drain.
