Atypical animal behaviour: White rhino battles with elephants in territorial row in South Africa

White rhino are unlikely to take on a group of elephants, making Sergeant's defensive behaviour unusual.
A stubborn white rhino faces off with a group of elephants in this extraordinary set of photographs

The peace of a morning game drive in South Africa was broken this week when a disgruntled male white rhino saw his territory invaded by a herd of breeding elephants.

Sergeant, a proud white rhino, confronted the large mammals as they made their way across the floodplain, watched by safari guests.

While black rhinos are known to show aggression, white rhinos are normally passive, making Sergeant's decision to take on the group highly unusual.

The elephants kicked up dust, blew their trumpets and charged at him in an attempt to stand their ground while protecting their young calf.

Two persons were allegedly attacked by bears in the foothills of Poigai Malai in Aralvoimozhi on Thursday morning. S. Seelan (34) and his brother S. Jegan (32) were on a visit to their agricultural land along with their father Selvaraj when they noticed the bears in close proximity. Even as they tried to run to safety, Seelan sustained injuries in the attack by the bears and Jegan escaped with minor injuries. Their father escaped unhurt.

The brothers were admitted to a private hospital and Seelan was later shifted to Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable. When contacted, District Forest Officer Vismiju Viswanathan said he was yet to receive any information on the bear attack.

Three earthquakes rattle Idaho with tremors felt from Washington State to Montana

Three earthquakes are felt in Idaho.
Three earthquakes up to magnitude-4.2 and nearly a half-dozen aftershocks jolted northern Idaho, with residents from Washington state to Montana saying they felt the tremors.

A Bonner County emergency dispatcher in Sandpoint said Friday morning that no injuries or damage were reported. The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-4.1 quake hit first, around 7:32 p.m. Thursday, centered 30 miles northeast of Hayden.

"It was crazy, the whole house was shaking," said Charity Hadley, 37, of Sagle, who was outside on her deck with her dog, Bella. "She was running around the yard and barking and looking around like, 'What is this?'"

She said nothing was damaged in the house during the quake that she estimated lasted several minutes.

A second quake of magnitude-4.2 struck a little more than three hours later, waking up Hadley and her dog. That quake was centered 38 miles northeast of Hayden. Then, a magnitude-3.3 temblor hit at 1:28 a.m. Friday in the same area.

Also Friday, a magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck British Columbia's north coast, but a tsunami was not expected and no injuries or damage were reported.

Sinkhole swallows dump truck in Aiken, South Carolina

An Aiken City truck fell through a sinkhole Thursday on Moultrie Drive in the Gem Lakes extension area.
When a loaded City of Aiken dump truck drove through Gem Lakes as a test to evaluate resident complaints that the streets there were poorly constructed by the developer, it took a tow truck to get it back out when a portion of the scrutinized roadbed collapsed.

Engineers have determined a leaking storm drain under the area caused the truck to fall through the undermined road surface.

City employee Steve Brown was driving the dump truck, filled with rocks and dirt, on Moultrie Drive Thursday to test whether the roads were supportive enough to hold that amount of weight. He said the truck just "kind of started sinking on one side; it didn't just automatically happen." City crews quickly worked to free the truck, and with the help of Wayne's Automotive Towing, lifted it out of the hole successfully, but not without leaving a large footprint. Crews examined the hole by sticking a pole in to see how deep it was - the answer, about 5 feet.

Mike Goss, the supervisor over the City's utilities, said crews were going to have to cut around the hole, and then fill the area with stones for the time being.

The tornado that touched down in Kunia.
Our newsroom has been flooded with photos and video of a tornado that touched down in Kunia.

It reportedly formed at around 3 p.m., catching the attention of many in the area.

The National Weather Service confirmed a funnel cloud formed for less than half-an-hour and touched the ground at some point, which made it a tornado.

It was very weak. No damage has been reported so far.

Kapolei resident Rocky Lacuesta says he had just pulled into his driveway when he saw the tornado and went running for his camera.

"I ran to my wife and I said oh my God I think I just saw a tornado," he told KHON2.

"I came flying through the door and asked my wife are you seeing this," said Kapolei resident, Stephen Morrison.

Thousands of starfish strand on beach in Cumbria, UK

Starfish on the beach
Thousands of starfish were left stranded on a west Cumbrian beach after a period of exceptionally high tides.

Photographer Gary McKeating made the discovery on Monday night when he headed to Harrington beach to take pictures of the sunset. He was horrified to come across what he estimates were around 2,000 starfish on the sands.

Experts say the high tides, which drop down low, coupled with strong currents resulted in the sea creatures being washed ashore.

Mr McKeating said: "There were a lot of kids down there and they told me to go and look at the starfish.

"They were on a sandbank right in front of the pier. I was very careful where I stood because I didn't know if they were dead or alive - I've never seen anything like it."

Dr Emily Baxter, marine conservation officer for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, believes the sea creatures would have been dead, as they cannot survive for long out of the water.

A map released by the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows the location of a 7.9 magnitude earthquake near Lamjung, north-west of Kathmandu

Quake near Kathmandu brought down buildings and was felt in India and Pakistan, according to early reports

A powerful magnitude-7.9 earthquake hit near Nepal's capital of Kathmandu before noon on Saturday, causing extensive damage with toppled walls and collapsed buildings, officials said.

Nepal's information minister, Minendra Rijal, told India's NDTV station that there are reports of damage in and around Kathmandu but no immediate word on casualties. He said rescue teams were on the scene.

The epicentre was50 miles (80km) north-west of Kathmandu, he said. The Kathmandu valley is densely populated with nearly 2.5 million people, with the quality of buildings often poor.

An Associated Press reporter in Kathmandu said a wall in his compound collapsed and there was damage to nearby buildings.

Drought spurs rodent problems across California

Image

The four year-old drought in California is causing an influx of rats and mice to seek sustenance inside homes and around public water sources during their spring breeding season, according to reports.

With less available water outdoors, rodents are using structural vulnerabilities and accessible lawn foliage to gain access inside California homes that provide the necessary water sources, CBS 13 in Sacramento reported.

"It's a very busy time especially with the drought situation," Kevin Carpenter of Good Earth Pest Control told CBS 13 of rodent breeding season.
