20,000 bees die in Canadian museum

Image

Ottawa - A Canadian museum launched an investigation on Friday into the sudden death of 20 000 bees on display in a glass encased hive.

"All 20 000 bees died within 48 hours," Amanda Fruci, publicist for the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, told AFP.

"The cause is being investigated but we know for sure that it wasn't colony collapse syndrome because that involves bees leaving a hive and never coming back, and in this case they all died in the hive."

In normal times, bee communities naturally lose around five percent of their numbers.

But with the syndrome known as colony collapse disorder (CDD), a third, half - sometimes even 90% or all - of the insects can be wiped out.

In the United States, government figures released last year showed a 29% drop in beehives in 2009, coming on the heels of declines of 36 and 32% in 2008 and 2007.

Mysterious decimation of bee populations have also been reported in Europe, Japan and elsewhere in recent years, threatening agricultural crops that depend on the honey-making insects for pollination.

SOTT Focus: Global Warming And The Corruption Of Science

Image
Global cooling, not global warming, is the reality
According to its official website, the Bilderberg group is composed of "leading citizens on both sides of the Atlantic" from the spheres of government and politics, finance, industry, labor, education and communications. Closely working together since 1954 to solve problems of critical importance, their ranks include high government officials, the royalty, media representatives, bankers and CEOs of corporate giants. Rather than 'leading citizens', they are better described as prominent members of the global elite. In congruence with this fact, their meetings are kept strictly private.

The manner in which this clique of the ruling class makes decisions affecting the rest of us is largely a mystery and as such has been target of speculation among alternative thinkers and writers. While it is unclear how high on the planet's hierarchy the group is, it is safe to say that their influence is considerable and they have access to raw data not necessarily shared with the population. For these reasons, it is significant that their last meeting was announced as follows:
"The 58th Bilderberg Meeting will be held in Sitges, Spain 3 - 6 June 2010. The Conference will deal mainly with Financial Reform, Security, Cyber Technology, Energy, Pakistan, Afghanistan, World Food Problem, Global Cooling, Social Networking, Medical Science, EU-US relations. Approximately 130 participants will attend of whom about two-thirds come from Europe and the balance from North America. About one-third is from government and politics, and two-thirds are from finance, industry, labor, education, and communications. The meeting is private in order to encourage frank and open discussion."
Specifically, the reference to Global Cooling - unlikely to be a simple mistake - appears to be an astonishing admission that the decades-long official discourse on climate is propaganda. (Indeed, at the time of writing, Polish and Russian forecasters are predicting the coldest European winter in 1,000 years.) Furthermore, it speaks of the contempt with which our leaders regard the masses, and reminds us of the level of corruption that has prevailed in the production of what now appears to have been a 'Global Warming' scam.

South Korea in chaos after heaviest ever snowfall, Han River in Seoul freezes over

The heaviest snowfall in more than a century on South Korea's east coast is causing widespread chaos.

Hundreds of houses have collapsed under the weight of the snow. One newspaper described it as a snow bomb.

The South Korean government has deployed 12,000 soldiers to rescue stranded residents.

Bone-chilling snow hits South Korea, heaviest snowfall in 100 years

Image
The heaviest snowfall in 100 years has hit South Korea's east coastal areas, prompting the military to dispatch soldiers to the affected regions.

The bone-chilling snow, measuring one-meter high, buried some eastern cities, stranded hundreds of motorists on the roads and damaged many buildings.

Some 12,000 soldiers have started a rescue operation in the snow-stricken regions and remote areas to dig out the homes of people trapped in the snow.

Food and aid have been delivered to isolated villages while many flights have been cancelled. Officials say schools in the snowing parts will be closed for the time being.

More blizzards are forecast for Monday, putting municipal authorities on high alert to deal with further traffic chaos and property damage.

The snowstorm came after record-low temperatures, which caused the Han River in central Seoul to ice over for the first time in 26 years.

Earthquake Swarm Just Part of New Kilauea Activity

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii are looking at a swarm of small earthquakes that shook Kilauea Volcano last week.

There were at least 42 earthquakes in the area within a 24 hour period that started Thursday. Geophysicists said while the temblors have diminished, they are another clue in what may come next at the world's most active volcano.

"Kilauea's summit has been extending, meaning that more magma is coming up to the summit than is going out to the east rift zone," said Jim Kauahikaua, the observatory's scientist in charge. That means there's move lava underground that's headed toward the actual Kilauea caldera, rather than the zone where most of the activity has been in the volcano's 28 year long eruption.

According to Kauahikaua, the extension of the crater has been going on for a few months.

"This extension of the summit is also reflected in the rise in lava in the Halemaumau vent," he said.

"All of them are indications that pressure is increasing in the magma chamber below the summit."

Cold wave tightens grip over Kashmir, heavy snowfall in Gulmarg

With no let up in snowfall in the high altitude areas, including the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, and intermittent rains in the plains, the night temperatures across Kashmir valley dipped today after showing steady increase over the past three days, engulfing the region in a the fresh cold wave.

It is still snowing in the upper reaches of the valley, including Gulmarg, the main attraction for the tourists visiting Kashmir during winter, official sources said.

The snowfall started in Gulmarg and other high altitude areas early yesterday under the influence of western disturbance which is expected to hover over the region during the next few days.

"So far 10 inches of snow have accumulated in Gulmarg hill resort, while its peripheral areas, including Khilanmarg, Kangdoori and Apperwath, received heavy snowfall," sources said adding reports of heavy snowfall were also received from Sadna top, Z-Gali and Razdan top in north Kashmir, holy cave shrine of Amarnath and adjoining areas in the periphery of Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, Sonamarg and Zojilla Pass along Srinagar-Leh National highway and Yousmarg in Budgam district of Central Kashmir.

Heavy rains lashed major parts of Balochistan on Saturday, paralysing routine life by cutting power supplies. Heavy showers and snowfall also caused traffic disruption between different districts in the province.

The meteorological department said more rains may generate flash floods in the seasonal rivers of Mekran and Sibi divisions. Emergency control rooms have also been set up in these areas.

According to the meteorological office, Quetta received 18.8 millimetres of rain while Dalbandin received 20 millimetres, Nukundi 15 millimetres, Zhob eight millimetres and Kalat 10 millimetres of rain. The Met office predicted more rain in Balochistan over the next 24 hours. Khanmitarzai, Tuba Kakri received one and a half feet of snowfall.

"We have formed two teams and set up a control room in the Levies Thana, Turbat to monitor the situation in the Mekran division," Deputy Commissioner Kech Tariq Qamar Baloch said. He said that all precautionary measures have been adopted.
