Flash floods and landslides in Italy after almost 10 inches of rain in 12 hours

Heavy rain in northern Italy has caused floods and landslides in the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria.

Italy's fire department, Vigili del Fuoco, said they carried out 900 operations across the north in response to the severe weather, including 226 in the province of Milan, 220 in Alessandria, 110 in Pavia, 110 in Lodi and 110 in Genoa.

Rail and road traffic has been severely disrupted across the 3 regions. Many schools are also closed in Liguria and Piedmont.

The province of Alessandria in Piedmont is among the worst hit areas. Piedmont Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA) reported that on 22 October, 2019 as much as 253mm of rain fell in 12 hours in Casaleggio Boiro.

55-year-old man dies after attack by dog pack in Uttar Pradesh, India

A 55-year-old man was mauled to death by a pack of street dogs in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night.

Police said the man, identified as Tej Singh, was viciously attacked by the canines while he was returning home Sunday evening. However, the incident came to light only on Monday morning after a villager found the dogs biting the flesh off a dead body.

Speaking to local daily the Times of India, a police officer said, "The victim was killed in a gruesome attack by a pack of dogs that roam around a nearby poultry farm. Local residents claimed that scores of locals have been attacked by the pack in the past too. However, this is the first time a death has been reported."

"The victim's body has been handed over to his relatives after conducting the autopsy. He was a daily wager working at a construction site," the officer added.

A violent tornado tore through Dallas on Sunday night, leveling buildings, tossing trailers and cutting power to thousands of homes.

A Tornado Watch was issued across most of North Texas as the weather phenomenon tore through the state with wind speeds of up to 111mph.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a twister touched down near Love Field Airport just before 9pm before moving approximately 17 miles northeast through the city as residents of Dallas and Ellis counties were warned to take shelter.

Social media was flooded with dramatic photos and videos of the tornado descending from the sky as users expressed shock over the sudden storm at the end of a sunny fall weekend.

NWS meteorologist Jason Godwin said the size and severity of the tornado won't be known until daylight comes Monday morning.

Local news outlets reported that several structures in North Dallas had been damaged, including a convenience store that collapsed when struck by unrelenting winds.

A clerk at the store reported that everyone who was inside the building made it out unscathed.

Rescuers are continuing to sift through the rubble left by a devastating tornado that tore homes and businesses apart in Dallas as authorities confirm four people were killed as a late-night series of storms caused chaos in several states.

The tornado struck the tornado struck Dallas at about 9pm on Sunday night with devastating 111mph winds.

An earthquake of magnitude 6 struck off the Pacific island nation of Samoa on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the quake, which the agency said hit at a depth of 89 km (55 miles) about 169 km (105 miles) southwest of the capital of Apia.

Casper Mountain in Wyoming sees 14 inches of early snow cover after latest storm

Casper Mountain saw over a foot of snow fall over the weekend.

As of Monday, Oct. 21, the Casper Mountain Snotel recorded 14 inches of snow cover.

That is according to the National Weather Service's Riverton office.

Snow is likely in the mountains from Tuesday-Thursday, the NWS says. Snow is also possible in lower elevations.

A dead whale has been pulled from the Thames, days after a humpback was struck by a boat in the same river.

The whale's carcass was recovered from the water near Town Pier in Gravesend at about 10am today.

It was spotted floating in the water by members of the public.

A Port of London Authority (PLA) patrol boat was sent out to retrieve the whale and tow it back to the port.

A spokesperson for PLA said the whale had to be towed "very gently" so it would remain in one piece and could be examined by scientists at the Zoological Society of London for a post-mortem.

6.4 magnitude earthquake hits off Vanuatu coast

An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck roughly 54 km from the coast of Vanuatu around 2:00 p.m. local time (0300 GMT) on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter, with a depth of 226.08 km, was initially determined to be at 19.0408 degrees south latitude and 169.4528 degrees east longitude.

About 12 hours earlier, a smaller magnitude 4.5 tremor hit roughly 91 km off Vanuatu's coast.

No tsunami warning has been issued for either incident so far.
